Angry CRAP! Need some puter help!!! now!

DAMNIT! So lately my computer has been freezing on me. So far in the appx 4 hours since I've been up, it's froze 5 TIMES!! I kept having to turn it off, ctrl, alt delete wasnt' working, neither was esc. But this last last time I logged in (windows xp) and once all the yahoo/msn crap got loaded, it froze before I could even move the mouse! Am I screwed? I know I'm gonna have to probably wipe out the hard drive...again!

I just really need to get in there and get my business stuff and pictures OUT!! AGH!

I can get some things since my husbands computer (what I'm on now), is networked, but it only has permission for some things and not others.

I ran virus and spybot and got nothing out of the ordinary, not sure why it's doing this!

Try booting it into safe mode (see instructions at: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml if you don't know what I mean). That might help. If it's stable at that point, it's probably not a hardware problem (unlikely anyway). Some (all?) versions of Windows have "safe mode with networking"... you might be able to get your files off over the network that way. Try loading MSCONFIG and following the instructions at: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm (just found this for you now, tried it on my computer, and noticed that in my case, MSCONFIG is located at: c:\windows\system32\dllcache\msconfig.exe ... yours may vary, so search for it if you can't find it).

Be careful, you can make it worse if you don't know what you're doing. What I'd recommend is basically disabling things in STARTUP, noting what you disabled, and then trying to boot it again. With any luck, you'll hit whatever it is that's causing the problem.

If it's a virus, it may be much more clever than regular software, and much harder to get rid of, in the case of a sophisticated one, likely way beyond my abilities to remove it from my own computer, so I don't even try to give advice :-).

Do be careful, whatever you do, you can always make things worse...

restart the computer. When you see the white bar flash by hit f8 as quick as you can.

Choose safe mode with networking support.

once in windows, open up INTERNET EXPLORER and go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com Follow the prompts for the free antivirus scan.

If your computer has any activity on it at all you can contact me later this evening and I can fix it for you remotely. PM me for contact information if you havn't gotten far with it.

i'll try to start in safe mode. i just removed some programs and took some things off the start menu and tried to get some updates from microsoft...while it was searching for udates the damn thing froze! grrr

ok, off to try safe mode and yet another viral scan....

well, safe mode didn't work. it wouldn't connect me to the internet. right now i'm backing up as many files as possible. it's going good so far. as long as i don't try to do anything internet related. so far i've backed up my pictures and now i'm backing up all of my business stuff. once i get all of that backed up, i'll feel much better! i may end up just wiping out the hard drive instead of trying to fix it.

Backing your stuff up is the most important thing: at least it's working well enough to do that (of course, you should always have current backups, yada-yada).

Personally, unless I succeeded in disabling something "obvious" that made it stop crashing, I'd probably tend towards the reinstall, too.

If you can boot it up in non-safe mode long enough to be able to see what's going on, try CTRL-ALT-DEL to have a look at the processes on the Task Manager. First kill all the running Applications (from the task manager if necessary), then kill any processes that don't look relevant (worst case, you'll crash/freeze the machine). You might eventually hit on the thing that causes it, if you're really lucky.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes...

well the failsafe is to back up your files, format hard disks, and reinstall windows. and remove any new hardware you may have added.

Try Spybot and adware there both free anti virus programs and you can download from there websites. Run one first and then the other and it should help. Just save stuff that you dont want lost before. Hope this helps !

The best thing to do, save your files, find someone who has Partition Magic and partion your hard drive making the C drive for your apps and windows and use the new D drive to put all of your stuff on... that way, if your windows screws up again later, all of your files are on the D drive, and you just blow away the C drive and reinstall... you dont lose stuff that way and dont have to worry about trying to back up your personal files...

The Operating System Wars have arrived to StripperWeb :-).

Storing all your stuff on a separate D: partition, as suggested by Aine, above, seems like a good general policy.

Anyway - hopefully your 'puter is doing better by now :-).

Rather than searching for viruses per se (which I presume you have already done) go to http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10399602.html and choose to OPEN the file it wants to download (oh....I'm assuming you're on a PC).....allow it to download anything that is "updated", and then run it. ANYTHING it finds, you should select with a checkmark and choose to delete it.....and let us know how it goes
