Default How to look great in pictures?

I could really use some help! All pictures of me look awful. I'm just not photogenic and I've become really self concious about it. If I'm on stage naked I can strut and sashay and ooze sex appeal. Pull out a camera and I am SO shy and nervous.

So of course I schedule a photo shoot for this Saturday.

I'm having pictures taken for my boyfriend. He's in the Navy and has been away for 4 months. This is his coming home present.

I'm having sexy pictures taken in his white Navy uniform. Also pictures taken Marilyn Monroe style naked with the white sheet. I'll be naked but the essentials will be hidden. I'm going for super sexy not super slutty!

The photoghrapher said to bring sexy music to help me relax.

Can you give me tips for posing, ways to smile, make up, hair ANYTHING to help increase my chances of these pictures turning out great?

I've been working out like crazy all week and using self tanner but I'm at a loss for everything else....

I'm so clueless and desperate! Help!

I'm horribly unphotogenic as well.I can take a good picture if I take it myself but otherwise I look awkward. I know of some great photographers who refuse to take a picture until you smile for real so you don't look posed/fake ish.

A good photographer will light you well and give you guidance and that helps alot! Use a professional makeup artist too. Anyone can take pics but a truly great photographer has the talent to help compensate for your so called "non photogenic" qualities. You spend all that effort and expense to get a good pic so you don't want anyone other than the best taking your pic . This is #1.

If you want, get rid of water weight 8-12 hrs before the shoot. To avoid a blank stare, relax, move slowly and think of your boyfriend. Good luck!

Exactly! Lighting is so key when you are getting professional pictures taken. I would suggest having the music on as well, and also have him pose you. Some people dont like to be posed, but I do. I'd hate for you to spend alot of money on those pictures and yet again not be happy.

I hope they turn out well...

practise is about the only thing that guarantees good pictures. knowing your angles, having about a squillion pictures done over time and being ruthless about what looks crap.

photographers do play a massive part. i've had shots with great makeup, styling and 10 years modelling experience, come out dodgy because the photographer didn't bring the right dish etc.

just make sure you've viewed his/her book and are happy with the work so far. then for your end of the bargain - practise your faces in the mirror. i know that sounds as gay as it gets, but it's how you learn. otherwise you're a stunned mullet on the day - and you get mullet pics.

little smiles, pouts, attitude - all these things need to be practised in the mirror, then when you hit the right look, close your eyes so you know what it feels like when you're not in front of the mirror. do the same thing for body angles. are you a hip, ass or gut girl?

once you work out which feature you want to minimise, practise poses that do that - and only use those on the day. a sheet sounds like an awesome prop for hiding anything you don't like.

i know you'll feel like a vain tart - but this is pretty much what every good model does to get to know their face and body. good luck - i hope it goes well for ya!

Confidence is everything when modeling/posing. If you don't feel comfortable with yourself and your body it will come across in the picture. There are times we all personally feel more comfortable and positive about our bodies than others. I feel best about week or two after my period, when I've been to the tanning booth and recently worked out. Having your hair and make-up done helps too.

Here's something that I got from another forum!

    Make your face look thinner
*Titling your face at a slight angle will make it look thinner.
*If you have a large nose - lift your chin slightly.
*If your neck is less than perfect, try craning your neck forward.
*Experiment with looks other than the full on cheesy grin. Try a Mona Lisa-like hint of a smile, cheeky arched eyebrows look, or even a wink. It will add movement and personality to your face and make you appear less static.
*Keep your chin tilted slightly up.
*Swallowing makes your neck look longer and more graceful.
*Look into the camera but don't stare.
*Take your glasses off to avoid glare and reflections from the flash.
*Putting your hair up and wearing long earrings will give the appearance of a longer neck.
*And, if you've been caught at a 'I must really wash my hair' moment, pull it back and top it off with a pair of sunglasses resting on top of your head for that just-got-off-the beach look.

    Make your body look slimmer
*Face the camera side on to minimise your stomach (pulling in those muscles at the same time!).
*One shoulder pointing forward will show off your figure to its best advantage.
*If you are sitting cross your legs at your ankles. Your thighs and calves will look slimmer.
*If (for some strange reason) you know your bum is going to be in the photo, tense and lift it for a few moments, but remember to keep your face looking natural at the same time!
*If you know you are going to be photographed – fake a tan!
*If at all possible, stand rather than sit.

    For a planned photo
*This gives you the opportunity to plan a little in advance.
*Wearing dark colours, especially on areas you are less than happy with, can help slim and hide them.
*Avoid anything too stark and dark next to your face (black, navy blues, browns, and dark greens for instance) as this will drag light away from your face, making you look washed out - and doing nothing to hide any less than perfect skin.
*Yellow is rarely a flattering colour.
*Jewellery reflects the light and adds colour and interest.
*Choose something bright and colourful (but not too patterned or busy) that will reflect light onto your face.
*Don't experiment with new make-up or hair just before you know you're going to have your photo taken.
*Make up should be light – tinted moisturiser is a great choice for glowing summer skin.
*Avoid having your photo taken in bright or direct sunlight, as this will throw shadows on your face. Late afternoon and early evening is the best time to get posing.

Thanks for all the tips. I spent last night posing in front of the mirror, and yup I pretty much felt like one big dork. It's funny how you "think" something looks great and then you look in the mirror and it's a really unflattering pose! And you move one of your body parts, like half an inch, then BAM it's perfect!

I really wish there was going to be a mirror so I could see myself during the shoot, i think it would make things much easier!

I've been trying to find a make up artist but in this area they all suck. I have not been impressed at all.

Is there any way possible I could do it myself and still have it look okay? Anyone have any basic guidelines, or even step by step on how to do photo make up?

ring the best modelling agency in your area and hire one of their makeup artists. most good agencies have a couple in the stable that get all the good work.

    Will definitly do that.

I wonder if I would have any luck with the girls that work at MAC? Aren't most of them that work there pretty good?

yeah you can go to mac and get your makeup done there before your shoot just make sure you tell them what you are going for because sometimes they get a little too dramatic for me.
    good luck!

    A really good website is:

You will find a ton of photographers who are willing to do TFP/TFCD (Time for Print / Time for CD) There are bunches of makeup artists that have thier portfolios on there as well. I hope this helps!
