    Default Poor fishy.

A few months ago moved into a new house and inherited a fish tank. The tank has 2 catfish(I think) that are approximately 5" long. Recently I came home to find one of the fish floating upside down and kinda sideways at the bottom of the tank and. He was not moving. I thought he was dead and when I went to remove him he started swimming around. He will swim for a few seconds and than go belly up and stop moving again. He is not eating.. The other fish seems to be doing fine. Does anyone know anything about fish? Is the belly up fish saveable?

I got my first fish when I was three. I think I won it at a church fair type thingy. I was so happy to have a pet...and then my dad moved the little fishbowl to the top of the dryer when he was drying a load of laundry. Bye bye goldfish. No more fish after that...although he did get me and my sis three dogs...all of which he gave away shortly after (one time I was glad because it would bite us). My dad sucked with pets until I was about 15....by then my parents divorced, but he got a dog which I saw on weekends....and she's till around 12 years later. Hopefully for much longer....she rocks.

Maybe take the fish to the vet, or consider investing in a new one. Is there a vet hotline you can call (thereby saving you money)? I called one after I accidentally got my hamster high...she got my second-hand pot smoke...they assured me she would be fine, as would I in a few hours. Or go into a pet store for advice?

Be very careful. It could be a pirhana masquerading as a catfish and this is just a ploy to lure you into the aquarium

Could be a sucker fish waiting to get some food. You really should figure out what fish you have though. Goldfish are supposed to live twenty years but people think fish are so disposable that they die much sooner.

    Might be Swim Bladder Disorder...

Does it ever try to swim at all or it just floats?

    Here's some info on SBD:

    And extra stuff..

All good advice - keeping a fish tank is a lot more complicated than some water and a couple of bubbles. It makes one more aware of the fragility of the biological sphere we all live in.

Sitri you made me pee my pants with your pirhana comment. I ran and showed my room mate and she thought I was retarded for being amused. She just couldn't see that you are a comic genius. You should win an award for your fish joke. Teehee.

I have fish out the hoohaa. My main thought is, if you're not even sure what type of fish it is, you have no idea what the Ph, alkalinity, ammonia levels, nor anything else are in the tank. From what you've said, the fish is more or less a goner. Take a little gladware container of your tank water to the pet store closest to you, and they'll tell you what's up, hopefully. Good luck to you.

Find a local fish store. NOT Petsmart, Petco, et all. A REAL fish store, preferably an independent.

Take about a 1/2 cup of water from the tank to the store and have them test it. Tell them what's happening with the fish. They can tell you if the water is bad and how to fix it, and recommend treatments for the fish. Tail rot sounds like you'll need to buy some antibiotics which they'll have at the fish store.

I had a little algae eater get really pale, almost see-through overnight once. He was lying on the bottom of the tank like that, and looked dead but would swim a little when touched then fall back to bottom.

People at the fish store tested my water and said it was fine, that the fishy probably wasn't getting enough food. Recommended I cut a fresh hunk of zucchini and tie it to something in the bottom of the tank (so it wouldn't float), leave it for about a day. I did, and my fishy was back to normal by the next day. Fish guys had said if that worked, to do the zucchini thing once a week or so. I did and no more problems.

Anyway, the fish store folks can help you out.

^^My fish love zucchini. I use one of those little suction cup clips to hold it, and they tear it up.
