how long did it take you to learn the pole?

i've been dancing for about a month and have learned a few pole tricks (climbing the pole, spinning on it, hanging upside down) so far. every experienced dancer says it takes time to build up the arm strength to do more difficult tricks. my questions: how long did it take you to become proficient at pole work? how did you learn (private lessons or just learning at the club from other girls)>

I've spent two years concentrating on pole work and still have so much to learn - some of the best pole dancers I've seen have been dancing 6years +
I guess a lot of it depends on the individual and how much upper body strength you have to begin with - I had hardly any so it took me a bit longer to pull moves off! Also the longer you dance the better you pull tricks off - they get more fluid and gracefull the more you do them.

it does take time to develop the strength and confidence. the best way to learn is to practice, practice, practice. go in before the club opens or stay late. or get a pole at home. watch the other girls and try to break their tricks down into simpler movements. if some of the girls are nice, they may help teach you.

but practice is the main thing, i think. the more you practice the faster you will develop the strength you need and the more comfortable you'll get on the pole. when you're practicing, don't be afraid to try new things. take a trick you already know and try to add another level of complexity to it. work gradually towards more and more difficult tricks.

I think that you are already doing very well if you can already do everything you mentioned above. I know girls who have been stripping a lot longer than you, and they still have not learned to do what you can already do. Just practice, practice, practice!

It will take you time to develop the strength to lift your body weight but it is not all strength, technique is important, the closer your body is to the pole (and your arms on the pole) the easier it will be to lift your body up. Don't go nuts on the pole tricks though, take it easy till your body has caught up with your technique otherwise you risk ligament injuries (especially around the shoulders with motion that pulls the arm in its socket) and they take a long time to heal.

I have been dancing along time....and I still don't do a lot of pole tricks. It just isn't necessary unless YOU want too.

thanks for the advice, everyone. my regular is caring enough about my safety to arrange private pole lessons for me (he's scared to death that i'll fall on my head and seriously injure myself). i love working the pole (especially spinning around it--so much fun!) and i hope to get better at it soon.
