i'm assuming you mean when you climb the pole, "sit" on it and then lean backwards until you're upside down.
if that's what you mean then the first step, for me at least, was to be able to sit on the pole with out using my hands. just the thighs and a little help from my shoe.
if you can do that, you can go upside down. have someone there to spot you whne you first try it. then lean back keep going. you can grab the pole under your head if you're worried about falling. there will a moment where your thighs slide a bit and you'll need to hold on more with the part just above your knees.
when i first started doing it, i kept one leg crossed and bent in front of the other (so they formed an L, sort of) and that helped me feel more stable. with some more practice i learned to stretch both legs straight.
it is a little scary the first time you do it, but you'll stick. just take your time and get someone to help you out![]()

woo thanx for the advice!
I didnt explain myself properly the moves that im stuck on are any where ur spinnin backwards http://www.verticaldance.com/Beginnerpoledancemoves.htm
like the back hook and stuff like that. Im ok doin the moves where im spinnin forwards but my leg just doesnt wanna lift off the ground when it coms to swingin backwards.

The "Back Hook" is actually really easy once you get a few of the mechanics of it. The key is to lean AWAY from the pole and let gravity take over. You have to essentially 'fall' into it and trust that your inside leg will catch the pole for you.
1) Stand next to the pole, with the pole on your left side. Right hand on top, above your head, left hand below, around chest level.
2) Stand on your left foot and lean away from the pole - adust your hand if necessary to give yourself more leeway to lean.
3) Right foot reaches OUT to the side, and then you start to let it circle behind you. This is the tricky part. You really have to lean away and let your leg go BEHIND you.
4) Your body will start to turn backwards, following your leg. ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN! Your left leg will 'catch' the pole at the knee automatically. You then let both legs bend and spin backwards until you land on your knees. Ta dah!
Once you get it, you'll have it down. It's a big "A-ha!" moment. One more thing about step 4, since it's tricky - the trusting the left leg to hook onto the pole: think about it, if you left your left foot on the ground, it works the same way - you don't even have to pick up your foot the whole time (but you will eventually have to bend your knee - that part feels really natural though).
Once you have it starting from a stationary position, start trying different ways of walking into it - the trick itself will get smoother and smoother as you find your own ways of building momentum. Hope this helps you!
Now if I can just master that damned Carousel . . .
"Before I conceived you, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before you were here an hour, I would die for you. This is the miracle of life." -- Maureen Hawkins
"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat." -- Anne Lamott
thanx so much...i was workin the pole on a night out recently and apparantly i managed to do it lol yea im still a little scared of the whole fallin backwards thing, i dont have enough trust in the pole yet.
that carousel is sooo painful i was taught it and it hurt sooo bad that im not gonna think bout attemptin it again until i build my strength up lol
