Default Camera dealer charges custies for convo

This guy must have spent some time reading stripperweb posts.

    http://www.sacbee.com/content/busine...15198913c.html

Last month, frustrated by browsing customers who came in to ask questions and handle the expensive equipment in his Sacramento camera store -- but went to the Internet or somewhere cheaper to make a purchase -- Kallweit quietly lobbed a counteroffensive.
Up went the fliers in his El Camino Avenue shop, a specialty camera store with a large inventory: "We love our customers … and we provide unlimited help and support for them." But in a warning to those who browse without buying, he added: "If you intend to buy your equipment online or from another retailer … we are now making our advice available for a minor fee of $15 per quarter-hour."
Although his non-paying customers had been allowed to handle the expensive equipment.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I am with him on this i mean these people are comming in and benfiting from his expertice and then spending there money elsewhere and that hurting his bottom line. He is smart to this now his buss. will only attract people willing to buy from him or at the very least pay for his time. There is no law saying knowagable store owners have to give free advice. Good for him.

I agree. You can ask all the questions you want online.

Now if we can get mugging victims to refuse to give in then we can nearly eliminate that also. (sorrry, pet peeve)

This has happened mechanics all the time - some now have a "diagnostics fee" for those who want to find out the parts needed and repair them themselves.

Ummm... I'm not paying for his inability to do his job. Part of selling is being able to close. If he can't close the sale, or train his sales people to properly close the sale, then he may want to find a new line of work, or hire a real salesman. My guess is that it will only take a couple months for him to notice that his traffic into his store has dropped to almost nothing, and his profit margins will go with it.

I spent 5 years in retail sales, and the one thing that was drilled into me by every manager and sales person who helped to train me was that learning to close the sale was the most difficult and most important part of selling.

I see your point, but the fact remains that price is all that matters to most people especially if you live where there is sales tax. Online is almost always cheaper unless it's a big item or has a high likelihood of breaking. I for one never go for extended service contracts and can't even be bothered to return things unless it breaks like the first month. Nor do I rarely need questions answered in person. There a certain group of people that need to be shown things and they are the ones going to the local stores or they just can't wait 2 days for shipping. I wait patiently and pay less. Heck, I always buy computer hardware that is a year old just for that reason.

Goodwill is an intangible value that he's trying to put a price on.

Yesterday's customer that bought online but got good advice from him may decide to come back to him for accessories or other future purchases because they appreciated the friendly service.

On the other hand, the potential purchaser now walking through his door may be put off by what sounds like a slightly hostile attitude and go to the competitor down the street or go online for future purchases.

I have given, and gotten, lots of free advice in my dealings, and it almost invariably turns into some future profitable deal at some point - if for no other reason than you become the type of person others want to deal with.

I'm glad someone finally said this because if you didn't, I would have. If he's losing sales because of the internet, he needs to start selling his product based on other things such as the quality of service you get after the sale on an expensive item that is not available through an Internet purchase, etc. While on the surface his idea sounds clever, I can assure you he's a moron when it comes to sales. He should be taking the complete opposite approach...let them handle all the cameras they want, and then he needs to close the sale better. My bet is within 6 months this guy is going to sitting around scratching his head wondering where all the customers went, especially after that article broke. His store is probably a ghost town right now if he's using his system.
