I would look up many different diets and see what would work best with her lifestyle.
Is she a major meat eater? In that case low carb might be the answer.
Does she need convenient food fast? Slim Fast could work.
If you tailor a plan to fit her needs she'll be more likely to stick to it. Of course there are basic rules to follow, like not eating past 7 at night, not eating anything processed, staying away from nutrientless snacks, always eating breakfast etc.
And there is ALWAYS time to exercise, even if it's just a 30 minute yoga tape a few times a week.

Not to look like a bitch, but I would like to point out this is a common diet myth with no truth. Whether you eat your calories at noon or midnight, it all just comes down to the amount of calories you eat. Going over is what causes you to gain weight.

Bikram Yoga seems to work great for me.

25 lbs in 30 days and don't worry about the diet - your body is so taxed and starved for energy you naturally crave what your body needs.

Try V8 juice for breakfast, a good sized lunch with protein and fruit/veggies and a light dinner with veggies and a little protein.

Kick start the metabolism and the body turns into a fat burning engine.

Always eat a small-to-medium-sized healthy breakfast. I had been a breakfast skipper for a long time until I hired a personal trainer and told him this. He looked at me as if I had just confessed to first-degree murder and practically shouted "You NEVER eat BREAKFAST?! You ONLY drink COFFEE?!" I thus began a morning ritual of eating a small bowl of all-natural hippie cereal with skim milk and fruit, and I've lost almost 10 pounds this past month. Hiring the personal trainer, of course, has helped, but eating breakfast makes me not want to scarf down the requisite 11AM block of cheddar or twenty cookies.

25 lbs in 30 days? Sorry, but I have to ask...are you over 400lbs or something? That's seems impossible otherwise!

Eat the most food when your metabolism's most active.

Mine doesn't even wake up at all for the first hour of my day. It's most active 6 pm thru midnight. I'm best off doing my workout in the early evening and eating lots of food around then. Don't listen to time-based tips from people who may have totally different internal schedules than you do. I'm an absolute night person and if I eat too much in the morning, I actually consume more calories throughout the day because my stomach decides it must be some kind of emergency and I'd better stock up not to starve... :-)

The yoga studio owner doesn't believe it either - I went from 220lbs to 195lbs (and still dropping). Before Bikram I lost 35lbs in 4 months with pure cardio and diet (which was hard to stick to - and yes, I was once 6'2", 255lbs). My body type is also changing from that of Linebacker back to a runner, which I was before the car accident 11 years ago. I never thought I'd feel nimble again.

Of course, I double up on cardio whenever possible. Once you get the metabolism ball rolling, your body craves exercise and nutritious food. The thought of eating pizza or a greasy hamburger gives me a gag reflex.

And if you are going to touch any weights, don't do any more weight in an exercise you can't do 40-50 reps at a time. You don't want to confuse your body by making it think it needs to build muscle, just burn energy. Burn, burn, burn.

Granted, I'm a little more intense than most, but the studio runs programs for people who want to lose 20 lbs in 60 days. There's a guy in there who's lost 90 lbs.

When I got home Sunday from a week dancing crazy hours in another city, I was shocked to get on the scale and see that I lost 7 pounds. And three days later, I haven't gained it back. Like I lost that much and it couldn't have been entirely water weight, since Ive eaten like a cow and still kept most of it off. (My boobs deflated a little too, which is so depressing, but that's another thing).

How did it happen? Just being maniacally active for the week. Dancing just about 12 hours a day and eating about half as much as usual because there just was not time to eat. Whenever I've lost a lot of weight quickly in the past, it's been the same deal: lots and lots and lots of excercise- to the point of exhaustion. Basically keeping moving the entire waking day. At that point it almost doesn't matter what I eat, and there's hardly time to eat anyway.

How to do that kind of activity voluntarily, ha, I'm not sure. But the more urgent the need to lose weight, the stronger the motivation. If she's home all day with kids, she could just do insane amounts of housework? Scrub every little corner, and throw in some sit-ups, push-ups, take the kids to the park...Anything to keep moving moving moving.

Which converts to a 140 llb.person losing about 15 pounds. It also sounds like you're taking in very few calories per day considering your size/height.

It's a lot easier for men to lose weight as their bodies aren't genetically programmed to store fat like ours are.

Your contention about muscle building also doesn't make sense to me. The more muscle mass one has the greater one's metabolism.

I think the effectiveness of it is in the fact that after dinner/after seven, people really don't eat because they need to its because they had a stressful day, are bored, are distracted, etc. It's just bulk calories that aren't necessary so if the rule is don't eat at all after seven, you cut out alot of absentminded snacking, stress eating, etc.

Im sorry, but what i dont get is why do YOU want her to lose it fast? Its my experience that if the person herself doesn't want to lose the wait, she will not, regardless of what you may want....

WOW Thanx for all the replies guys you have helped me out thank you all so so much!!

And HoneyHITZone - I have spent hours talking to her and she wants to loose the weight but she has no idea where to start. I know that i'll be doing all the work and she wont be doing jack all but I'll just have to see how she goes with it. I can be a hard ass at times and I will be checking up on her twice a week to make sure she is following every step. If she backs down then thats her problem not mine.

Dude, that's astounding! <sounds excessive, but what the hey!> Also loving Bikram, and now that vaca is completed, I must get back to the studio. I was going 2x per week. How often for you?

In my own case, I went from 206 to 190 quite easily. This was during a period of zero booze consumption, which is easy to accomplish since a Bikram class on a hangover would be very unpleasant and maybe even dangerous!

Wow, that's really amazing! Congratulations! And you're completely spot on about how the body and metabolism reacts to exercise and diet. Feel free to share the info on which studio you go to!

I don't need to lose 20 but I've got that dreaded last 10 pregnancy pounds that won't seem to budge and I workout/follow healthy diet religiously (sans the occasional alcoholic beverage or three). I've long been considering going too a yoga studio. I get to bored doing DVD's at home.

Thanks for the congratulations - congratulations to yourself on your new baby.

There's a lot of new mom's in the studio - a very, very popular way to try to get the body out of pregnancy mode.

I'll PM you the details. The studio I go to is the oldest in the valley and they're running one of those 30 day specials right now.

Anyone else interested in the details, PM me and I'll respond.

i've been dieting too lately & rcently started exersising regularly (20min cardio little weights 4x a week) and have been loosing weight slowly but steadily. the best advise i can give is actaly advise you can find on any diet site:

measure your food intake like its a religious law...we put so much food in our bodies when we dont need that much....lessen up on meats and eat more veggies/fruits...cut back on fatty dairy like whole milk, cheese and butter...watch the carb intake but dont eliminate that entirely...and water water water (this will help flush the fat out of the body). and exersise is very important..she can go for walks with her kids everyday (it will be good for them too).

also quick foods on hand are good, i keep slim fast shakes on hand as well as low fat yogurt and apple sauce if i need a quick snack. preparing meals beforehand is good too..again she can get her kids involved with food preperation (if they are old enough to help anyway).

It sounds like you know more than me. All I know is that my body wants to have a high metabolism with lean, wiry muscles. I've had no dropoff in strength, but some dropoff in power because I don't have all the leverage the extra weight gives you.

This is due to the difference between fast twitch and slow twitch muscles.

Fast Twitch Muscle is to provide rapid movement for short periods of time. These muscles will function during moderate and maximum muscle effort. Fast twitch muscles provide you strength (weightlifting) and speed (such as spriniting). These muscles use stored glycogen in the liver for there energy. That's why it is advised to eat something before you weight train, because you'll have more POWER.

Slow Twitch Muscles. As their name indicates, these fibers have a slower contraction time. Slow twitch muscles use oxygen for power and have a predominance of aerobic enzymes. These muscles require oxygen versus glycogen in order to function. Hence, that is why they suggest an empty stomach while doing low intensity aerobic activity and workouts like Yoga because you will immediately go into fat burning mode.
