    Default Acne at 30

Has anyone here noticed an increase in acne once they hit 28+. My deep, blind, cystic "one-offs" have become some kind of chain gang. one grows, inflames, i kill it with my zit cream, then next day or same day another one nearby starts. i have not had a break from these evil things for so long i can't remember.

i read somewhere that 1 in 4 women over 30 experience this adult acne. feels like it's only my pimply self at this point.

my friend gave me a spare set of her 'proactiv' infomercial cream set. it works really well to kill them, but it's by no means a 'miracle cure'.

what the hell? i'm not on any hormonal contraceptives - it's all my own work! does anyone else have the pimples of doom or a cure that actually worked?

it is really quite depressing having to go to extraordinary lengths to hide them when i leave the house. oh, and i am not the typical oily skin type. i have dry, super-sensitive skin, but its top layer is extremely strong (hence the trapping of all this stuff under it). oil free moisturisers make my skin feel tight and crackly.

maybe some of you beauty therapist girls have some ideas?

Yes, I am 29. My skin is clear now, but hasn't been up until about 6 months ago. I am a licensed cosmetologist/esthetician and I have noticed in my facial clients that acne seems to appear around the mid-twenties and early thirties. I think there is a hormonal shift. You may consider seeing an endocrinologist if it persists. One of my favorite places to visit, with tons of info, is acne.org. There is a message board there and you will find all the answers you need! Let me know if you have any questions.

Microdermabrasion is a wonderful treatment of the skin. Your skin will never feel better. It is great for reducing fine lines and light acne scarring, but it won't get rid of your current acne. It is only a superficial treatment of the skin. Acne is typically an outward manifestion of an internal issue. You could have any number of issues going on such as food sensitivity, hormonal imbalance, PCOS, insulin resistance, etc, etc, etc, If the acne perseveres and becomes chronic, like I said the best bet is to save your microderm $$$ and see the endocrinologist. Once you heal the acne from the inside, the microderm makes the skin awesome like icing on the cake. However, another idea is to see a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon for cortisone shots, if you have a really bad cystic flare up. A cortisone shot will kill that puppy immediately. This is excellent if have a really important event, like a wedding, where a big one lands on ya. But the cortisone shots are only a temporary fix. For chronic issues, see the endocrinologist (not the dermatologist).

I'm 25 and i've been breaking out with cystic acne since I was in my early teens. I've tried everything. I just went to the dermatologist office last week, i'm finally getting on Accutane. I've tried everything, and nothing is working on me. I'm get alot of them too. I have oily skin and always proned to break out. It was fine last year, but with stress and hormornal changes...it's gotten pretty bad.

I also plan on getting acupuncture to treat hormornal acne. You may want to look into that route. I've read some posters on acne.org who suffer from hormornal acne and it worked on them. Def. check that site out. Lots of helpful information there.

Please don't do accutane. It's is so bad for you. Did you read the side effects and the disclaimers? I promise, an endocrinologist will do you more good than a derm. That's what endocrinologists do, they treat hormones. Dermatologists only treat the superficial acne on the surface of your skin. Get to the root of the problem. And I agree with the acupuncture, it's worth a shot.

I want to do a round of accutane too. I have horrible flare-ups. It seems like as soon as my skin clears up, it looks gorgeous for a few days and then BAM! cysts again. I'm willing to brave the accutane side effects if it means it'll clear up once and for all.

It won't clear you once and for all. I did three rounds of it and it was expensive. It did not work. I am now on a routine of Glucophage, Spironolactane, and Yasmin. I am 100% clear, even when I sleep with my make up on. Try it if you must, but don't say I didn't warn ya.

Yes, I have. And i've done months of researching on it. I'm ready to take it.

    What's an endocrinologist?

The problem with me is that my acne was always there. It's not only hormornal. It's always been oily and acne prone, since I was a kid. This is why Accutane is my last resort.

An endocrinologist is hormone specialist, to put it in layman's term. Accutane (simplified) is nothing but extreme doses of Vitamin A. It dries your skin up so that there is no acne, however the side effects are so bad, you have to wonder what it is doing to you internally and the long term effects. Why trade one problem for another? What does overdosing on Vitamin A have to do with settling your hormones? When the accutane is over, the breakouts will come back, because the hormones were never treated in the first place. Think about it, you say your acne has been there since you were a kid. Were you prepubescent? Isn't that the same time your hormones started kicking in? Accutane will mask your acne for a short period of time, but at what cost to you? But you will have never addressed the root problem.

Sorry to get all hyped up about it, I have had acne for years and tend to get emotional about it. Especially since skin care is my job. I just want you to make the right decision for yourself. I am going to shut up about it now.

I'm 28 and have had acne problems on and off since puberty. After trying everything on the market, I am currently on accutane and it is the best thing I have ever done for my skin. All the scary warnings kept me from trying it sooner, but I wish I had just ignored everyone and gone for it. It's the only thing that has ever worked, including expensive microdermabrasions, laser treatments, acid peels, etc etc etc. If you have acne, accutane is definitely something you want to consider.

Yup, same exact deal with me. But there are so many ppl who have been on it and have been fine after. As long as you follow proper rules, you should be fine.

Zabrina, curious. How long have you been on it? My derm is going to put me in a 5 months course.

My mom (50) and I both have acne issues. As crazy as this sounds, wash your face with honey. It's moisturizing and antibacterial. I swear by it and my lurvly microdermabrasion cloth. ( www.derma-c.com )

I haven't been able to find a doctor in my area who will prescribe accutane.

I do like honey; when I use an aspirin mask I like to mix the crushed aspirin with honey.

My skin has been driving me crazy lately I do believe I am becoming obsessive and neurotic about it.

I have also suffered adult breakouts and at one point did a round of Accuatane. It worked for me for about 3 years and I had pretty much zero acne at all during that time. My skin never went back to what it was prior Accuatne but the meds did wear off and I began to have some problems again. Accuatne was pretty hard on my liver though and due to that I chose not to do a second round. Since then have tried many, many things before fnding something that works for me.

I have VERY sensitive skin and most things were just too harsh for me including microdems. I now use a combo of products which work great for me anyway. I discussed them in this thread:

yeah honey seems like it would be a sticky, gooey, pore clogging mess but it's not. As mentioned, it's naturally anti-bacterial and moisterizing. And it really does rinse off very nicely and cleanly. It's certainly no cure all though, I'm at my wits end (literly) with my skin right now...I really don't know what to do anymore. :-(

Oh! I completely forgot to mention this! Switch to mineral make-up. I couldn't believe the difference it made! It's so much gentler and it doesn't clog your pores anywher near as much. (And it lasts so much longer than my conventional make up! I can swim and it doesn't come off! But be careful about allergic reactions. My mom's skin went berserk until she changed brands, but I've had no problems with it.)

after years and years of acne treatments (including accutane, retin a, antibiotics, contraceptive pills) the only thing that has worked tried and true for me is paula begoun's clear skin kit. it consists of a nonirritating cleanser (for both oily, normal and dry skin), a BHA (salicylic acid) treatment, a benzoyl peroxide treatment, moisturizer, carbon mask, and sunscreen.

my skin has never looked better. it's low-cost, too...for about $80. i'd die if these products were discontinued. you can check out her skin care at

    http://www.cosmeticscop.com

i also use mineral makeup, which has helped a lot.

I didn't have time to read the responses at the moment, but 2 huge culprits for acne are gluten and dairy. Quit them both for a month (not easy), it's likely you'll be amazed at the quality of your skin.

^so what does that mean? no bread and no dairy products? Come to think of it when I cut bread out of my diet several months ago it did make a big difference. But I love bread soooooo much! Yeah, definately not easy.

eta: mineral makeup is a godsend for acne prone skin. Just make sure you wash your brushes regularly.

For SOME people. I eliminated gluten, sugar and dairy for 2years, and it was good for me overall, but in retrospect did not much for my skin. Like, I think I saw some slight results, bcause I wanted to...but now that I've seen real results (from Tazorac), I'm pretty skeptical about diet as an acne cure.

Cystic acne won't be helped by topicals though...you should go see a derm or an endo.

ACCUTANE!!!! OH GOD! I was on accutane for a "round" (I think it's six months they put you on it?). IT was a horrible, awful experience. Every part of me went dry. My lips were so dry they were cracked and bleeding. My nose was dry. My eyes were dry. IT's like it just sucked the moisture right out of me. Each and every pill you take has to be individually popped out of a pill package. On top of each pill there is a tab that must be pulled off showing a pregnant woman with an international "NO" sign over her. That's because accutane can cause horrific birth defect. Like, thailidomide horrible. That stuff is scary, scary.

    AAAAAAAAAAAND...

It didn't work. By the end of the six months, my face was clear. Then after another six months it was RIGHT BACK where it had been.

Birth control is what finally did it for GOOD for me. I have perfect skin when I'm on it. Now, the ultimate safety of that is certainly not undisputed. But I'll take it any day over something like accutane.

I recently went off the pill for several reasns and my acne came back. I now use a topical product called Acne Free that you get at Walmart for cheap. It's a combination of a low strength salicylic acid and a low strength benzoyl peroxide. This works really well. Oh, and the "maximum stregth" thing is just a marketing ploy. More then 2 or 3% benzoyl is going to make your shit worse.

Coffee makes my skin look worse. The cystic acne comes out more & it makes my skin oilier. Also the switch from regular powder to mineral powder made a difference too. It doesn't hold the oil as long as some good matte powders, but it def. wont clog pores and make my skin break out more.

Quiting coffee and changing my makeup helped alot, but not enough. I still get painful cysts & nodules. It's been years, and i'm getting so sick of it already.

I've even done those diets too. Didn't work for me. Everyone reacts to certain things differently.
