    Default Another weight loss thread!

So I've decided to give Atkins a go. Although I guess I'm not so much following the Atkins rules (Atkins says you can eat as much fat as you like, but no carbs, right?), I'm really trying to stick to the low carb, low fat, low calorie thing. And lots of exercise of course.

I've got a pretty major photo shoot coming up in a few weeks so I wanna shed as much weight as I can. The thing is, I really like food. I really like variety. I'm gonna get REALLY bored of eating vegetables with lean meat for every meal.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any low carb recipes or food ideas, so I can spice things up and hopefully stick to this diet a little better. Unfortunately I don't eat seafood so it's all chicken/red meat/veg for me.

nooooo! don't do it, girl! you're setting yourself up for misery.
i've done atkins, it's just a bunch of bullshit.
trial and error. I figured it out. extreme dieting like atkins, etc just doesn't work. you're miserable mentally, you're likely to binge on late night food, or pick up an addiction to help you get through the misery of dieting.
please just learn from my mistakes....atkins is bad idea, plain and simple. google it up online. you'll see why it's a bunch of junk...if you find the right info about it.
I do believe in cutting back some carbs...like refined carbs(white bread...). I believe in having oatmeal prepared with a little bit of butter/margarine, brown sugar, and cinnamon. flavor, not deprivation. or having brown rice....or if you don't have time to prepare it, some whole wheat bread... you need fats....buy some flax oil, have some every day.
you want your hair to be more likely to fall out? then cut back big time on fats. your body will hate you for it, and it will show you that.
eat everythign in moderation, stay away from processed foods, ahve some cheese,...some salsa...some flavorings...you won't last with plain plain plain foods....
but then again, sometimes in order to learn, you need to experience the trial and error yourself, and not just go by what someone else says... but maybe here you should take my word for it....just work out max 2 hours per day, and eat well=balanced...maybe cut back some calories...to assist with the weight loss, but never eat like less than 1500 cals per day (use an online calorie counter). good luck girl!

You might want to check out the South Beach approach. Low carb principles, but much healthier in my opinion.

The Atkins diet will not work unless you eat high fat. Your body will not go into ketosis unless you eat extreme amounts of fat and under 20g of carbs. The akins diet is to trick your body into burning fat and in order to do this you need a lot of fat in your diet. Your body will stop burning carbs for energy and start to burn fat instead. However it takes about 3-4 days to actually get into ketois. You can buy ketostix at a pharmacy that you pee on to tell if you are in ketosis or not. You still have to make sure that you are not over doing the calories or you will gain weight, and as we all know high fat food has high calories. So basically you can't eat fuck-all on this diet for it to work, plus you get REALLY cranky from not eating carbs. I did it for 4 days and wasn't able to get into ketosis so I stopped because I was snapping at everybody! White flour and sugar are really the things to avoid.

I tried Atkins and it didn't work for me at all. I was incredibly cranky and it also made me paranoid. Your body needs carbs from fruits and veggies.

    My serious weight loss program:

Wake up: V-8 juice and a bananna
    90 minutes hard cardio

Lunch: 1/2 chicken breast and a fruit
    60 minutes cardio

    Snack: fruit/veggies

    After work:
    90 minutes bikram yoga

Spinach salad w/ the other 1/2 chicken breast

    Other ideas for meals:
Bean salad (very handy to have in the fridge for a quick meal or snack):
    White beans
    Lentils
    Red Beans
    White Corn
Cilantro & red onion for flavor
Or I keep a bowl of chicken, red beans and whole grain rice all cooked up in the fridge for meals when I don't want to cook something fresh.

^^ Damn I'd lose wieght too super fast if I was on that too. I hope you are not doing that long term. Its doesnt seem very healthy to do for long periods of time. Bean salad is really good though. Instead I put green beans and no corn.

azcustomer, that sounds like an effective diet but I'd probably go insane if I tried it. I want to lose weight but I have a limit to what I can do.

    Bunny,

Don't try to go into it full bore, step into it over time.

The first week of hard cardio, I allowed myself treats like pizza, a hamburger, etc. to maintain brain sanity.

Try not to weigh yourself - you weight comes from many factors including water retention and muscle weight. Weighing yourself will just confuse you. Look at your body in the mirror regularly (like strippers need to be told this ). Take a daily inventory of how you feel and how your body looks.

When you wake up in the morning, focus on how you feel and set yourself a goal for exercise and what you're going to eat.

Over time, your metabolism builds endurance and later, your body will crave healthy food. Now, the thought of eating pizza or a hamburger seems ridiculous - I think I'd throw up.

Focus on 'listening' to your body. When it really wants that ice cream or chocolate, give yourself a little. Just remember to keep it to a little, so that your attitude and energy are kept happy, but slowly you wean yourself off the unhealthy stuff. When you do eat that ice cream, take your time and enjoy the few bites you are going to eat, like a good massage. You've worked hard for it.

Care about yourself and your body. Be kind to it and work on developing a stronger connection between your brain and how your body feels.

Be patient. It took me 3 months to get ready for this lifestyle. I feel 10 years younger.

AZCUSTY : No wonder you have lost 25 pounds in 30 days! You are burning more calories than you are consuming and that's not even to mention your BMR daily caloric needs (which are probably about 2500++). Don't hurt yourself. Please don't do this long term - this isn't healthy! And you don't want to become "manorexic"!

Thanks for the concern - but I'm converting my body style. I used to be a long distance runner who could eat anything. Then I was in a bad car wreck and through the physical therapy, my body style converted from runner to linebacker. The added quick power and leverage from the extra weight was fun for a while, the ladies noticed me more, but as I got older, I realized the body style was unhealthy for me - especially my joints.

Once I can run comfortably again, I'm going to start eating more and working out less.

Oh yea, going back to the OP:
Darcy - here's a link to some recipies:

Atkins is often misunderstood...i highly recommend reading the Atkins book to get the actual recommendations (most people, for instance, assume that Atkins is all steak and eggs and no exercise...but no no, that is what people who do atkins wrong do...actual atkins recommend a lot of good protein [i.e. chicken and turkey] vegetables, and daily exercise]

Another excellent resource, containing Atkins tips, disproves myths, and has excellent exercise recommendations, is the website sugarfreesheila.com

^The thing about Atkins is it really depends how you do it. You can follow it having lots of salads, avocado, chicken, fish, raw veggies and dip, berries, and so on or you can have bacon and cheese. Bacon is actually not recommended because of the nitrates...you want to stay away from processed foods.

You do have to eat fat on Atkins. A low fat version is more South Beach. Cutting out fat is uneccessary and potentially dangerous. You need some fats and eating fat does not make you fat. This doesn't mean you have to load up on saturated fat. Like a pat of butter, some avocado, cheese, a drizzle of olive oil on your veggies...that kind of thing.

You're only under 20 carbs for 2 weeks, then you add more carbs a week at a time. It's false information to say you're not eating veggies, because you start off induction with 4 cups veggies/day. In the end you're eating a really balanced diet which does include whole grains if you want them.

I had a different experience than Concubine and Az...my depression/irritability went away on low carb as my blood sugar stabilized. This diet doesn't make everyone depressed.

Oh yeah and www.lowcarb.ca has a recipes section...

Anyway, my point is it's not dangerous if done correctly and some people's bodies fit really well with the plan. Just another perspective for ya.

I absolutely hated Atkins. It was disgusting
My breath stank...i stank. My skin went so nasty. I was physco...more than usual. I cried alot...I think i lasted 8 days or so. I did go into ketosis really quickly...but my body felt so dirty. Never again. I'd rather be chubby and healthy than try that shit again.
It's worked for my husband before...but it's just not worth it for me.

Does your hair really fall out if you don't eat enough fat? Even if you eat a very healthy, nutritious balanced diet, just with a really low amount of fat? And take your daily vitamins?

wow, is atkins really that bad?

to be honest, i didn't really know much about it at all apart from not eating carbs. i don't think i wanna go full-on atkins.

at the moment i'm taking diet pills/metabolisers, along with eating heaps of raw vegetables during the day, and a big plate of steamed veggies with either grilled skinless chicken breast or lean steak for dinner. and i'm drinking HEAPS of water. like i said, it's not a long term thing, it's just for this photo shoot. usually photo shoots don't worry me too much because they can airbrush out any rollypolly bits lol, but this is for a major competition in a mens magazine and they actually make a DVD out of it, and they're not gonna be able to airbrush my chubby bits for an entire DVD.

thanks for all the advice on atkins though. i probably should've reasearched it a bit more first, hehe.

Here's a tip that my mum gave me. I'm not sure what the name of her diet was...but damn it worked.

Try eating some protein before any carbs. Just a few mouthfuls. It stimulates the proper hormones for digestion....whereas if you eat carbs first, this stimulates your insulin making you crave more carbs...

If you follow that diet and exercise routine you are setting yourself up for failure! If you do end up losing weight a big part of it will be muscle so you'll end up being a skinny fat person (a skinny person with a high body fat percentage despite being small). You'll get injuries and burnt out fast. Long term there is no way to do this without performance enhancing drugs. This is in no way practical and very dangerous!

Did I read AZ's post right? 3 workouts a day!!?

    Lordy, I wouldn't last a week--okay, 3 days--on that regime.

My personal goal is a daily 45-60 min cardo workout, complemented by twice-weekly Bikram.

in my opinion.. a diet is a viscious cycle because it is a never ending battle unless you find a weight loss plan that fits you for the rest of your life.. but at the same time.. as an exotic dancer.. having a proportionate body is crucial

My uncle is a doctor and he actually got me to go on Atkins for a while... but with very strick rules...
    1) You must take a GOOD multivitamine because it can cause body odor
    2) Staying away from carbs is fine but the list they give you is not that great for you... no matter what if you eat bad foods (like bacon) you will feel like shit while you are on the diet and have no energy. Instead if you eat healthy proteins (like instead of bacon- turkey bacon) it may be harder but the result will be much better and you will feel WAY better!
    3) Also to try and stick to spacing meals at least 2 hours apart.
    4) Try to workout before you eat in the morning as much as possible.
    5) After you go off it you have to go on a low cal diet so that your body can readjust to carbs without packing on pounds

I had great results with this... it's not realistic long term but it work well for me taking off the "extra weight" that I normally don't have on me.

It is short term, and I'm doing it to lose muscle weight. I got a wake up call when doctors wanted to cut my knees for torn miniscus in both of them. Being really active with bulk is fine until you get over 30 yrs, then your joints lose the ability to take all the pounding.

What I laid out was my base-line exercise routing and diet. The diet I laid out is the MINIMUM I've eaten while on this routine. Anyone who exercises a lot needs to listen to their body and give it what it needs. What is great about exercising this much is, your body pretty much screams at you what it needs - I haven't craved healthy food this much since I was a kid.

And I have my own team of advisors I am using, which consists of:
    > Physical therapist (also massage therapist) I see weekly - she's also a yoga guru and nutritionist
    > Yoga instructors (2 of them are studied in yoga therapy for my ailments)
    > Triathelete trainer

Another week or so and I'll ratchet it all down, but Darcy did ask for a way to make a big difference in a few weeks.
