Exclamation Advice please! Re: OTC meeting

    Hi everyone,

I was hoping I could get some advice on a situation I've got:

Saturday I spent the whole night chatting with a customer doing occasional dances. We got on really well but spent the entire time chatting about marathon running and training etc etc. (my luck a blossoming marathon runner sits down with a semi pro!)

Maybe unwisely, exchanged mobile numbers and emails (seperate to my personal number/email). As it happens, he goes to a running club here that I'm keen on joining (although he said first he goes to it, didn't just agree with me once I mentioned it!)

He is aware that I am not single, am in a steady relationship, and am not interested nor offering any further than conversation about running, and he says he accepts and understands this. He's invited me to lunch next week, and I said I'd go. I've picked where, and it's a big busy area that I know well and feel safe in.

As I may actually run into him in local parks (pardon the pun ) in the course of taking part in similar groups/clubs and potentially end up in the same 'marathon program' and also that I've made it clear to expect nothing further from me, is it unwise to meet him???? Have read soooo many things saying 'Don't meet customers OTC! Never!' that I feel unsure of what to do!! I don't want to break any cardinal rule but at the same time I think what's the issue here? It's certainly the only time I've considered this and wouldn't of with anyone else, extenuating circumstances????

Should I keep the apt ladies??? Phew* thanks. xxx

DO NOT meet customers outside the club!

You should be focused on developing regulars, not setting up dates. What will you gain from going out to lunch with this guy? Again, DO NOT meet customers outside the club!

If you are going to "run" into him due to your common interest in marathons and you've explained that you are only interested in him as a training/running buddy, then I don't see what the harm is in keeping the appointment, especially in a safe public place.

That being said, in your post you sound pretty nervous about meeting him OTC, and I almost always trust my instincts when it comes to guys. If he makes you nervous - don't do it!

It isn't good business sense, and it poses potential risk. Some of us customers are nuts. There are lots of ways to try to control risk, like picking locations and bringing other friends along, but nothing's ever perfect. In the end, you're the only one who can decide whether it's worth doing.

Put it this way: Inside the club confines the rules, such as they are, are understood by all parties. OTC things can get wiggy because rules aren't as well-defined. I wasn't clear, but is your custie planning to pay for your time at lunch? While this sounds harmless and profitable, I would argue it's not worth the inevitable drama that'll ensue. If you do decide to meet him, do take all necessary precautions and definitely let your bf (you mentioned you have a bf, you said) know what's up. One final thought: Test his motives by suggesting that your bf come to lunch with you! If custie balks, you'll know he had an ulterior motive. Wicked, wicked men!

OK: I have done the RIGHT thing and I have called it off in a good way. I spent some time thinking about it and came to the decision, so coming back to read these replies was really nice....
He wasn't going to pay for my time but still I think the nervousness on my part was more the 'how would this make my boyfriend feel' issue. He's fine with me dancing, but meeting outside the club I'm sure would really be different!!! Also, how would it make me feel, what if I'm actually a teensy bit attracted to the guy? What if what if what if....

I think if I'm going to get to pick this guy's brain maybe just wait and see if I DO run into him in another circumstance and then that will be another matter so we can just see if that happens and if not, there are a lot of runners out there to get advice from, without feeling compromised.

    Thanks for that xxx
