    Default Now THAT'S a tip!!

When I first read this in the paper, I thought TOO had stopped through my neck of the woods to have dinner.

I can proudly say I've sat in this restauraunt and have been personally served by the recipient on a couple of occasions.

Lets just hope this nice story, doesn't have a not so happy follow up (credit card bounces, he's dying of cancer and giving his money away, he's a stalker and has gone RIL on her). I'm so cynical that all I can think about since hearing this is, "I wonder what his agenda is?"

Do you remeber her well? Was she really cool?

I think that is a great story. I love things like that. There have been so many occasions where I wish I could leave someone a big old tip. And especially when it is just a geniune gift and doesn't have any weird meaning or strings attached.

Reminds me of a country song about a woman who has a flat tire and some guy stops and fixes it. He refuses to take money from her and tells her to just pass it on. She stops in a diner and is waited on by a very pregnant woman. She leaves the woman a $100 tip and a note about the flat tire. Turns out the flat tire guy was the pregnant woman's hubby and of course, they desparately needed the money. I'm such a sap..... makes me teary eyed.

It's funny how things are all relative. In most of the big casinos in Vegas, a $10,000 tip barely even gets noticed. Kerry Packer was famous for tipping cocktail waitresses entire houses. He used to tip the Valets at some of the casinos mortgage payments, $1000 chips, etc. A few years before he died, he had a heart attack and the EMTs who resuscitated him each got a house. Back when my father used to deal cards at Caesars, he one time was dealing to Kerry and the tip he got was enough to where every dealer went home with about $4,000. Now, doing the math, there are about 300 dealers that get a cut of the daily tips in the 21 department. So for each person to receive a $4,000 tip Kerry tipped my father $1.2 million. So now you understand when I kind of laugh at a $10,000 tip as being big news.

I have always wanted to do this, leave a huge tip, or pay for someones drive thru without them knowing. Someday I will be able to I hope.

There was a similar story a few years ago about a bartender (think it was on the east coast somewhere) getting a 10k tip on a tiny bartab from a travelling businessman. I remember the story of the lady saying she had been telling the guy how bad her luck had been lately (probably in hopes of scoring a pity tip ), and he put a 10k tip on his cc bill. Maybe it was the same guy. Maybe it wasTOO - uh, you been in Kansas lately??

But it's like I said, everything is relative. Kerry actually did that exact same thing several times tipping dealers hundreds of thousands of dollars. The first time he did it, it made big news all over Vegas within hours. After he did it five or six times, it wasn't even noteworthy..."Oh, Kerry left a big tip at the MGM last night yadda yadda yadda."

Somehow, I think a regular guy tipping $10,000 at an Applebee's IS bigger news than a gazillionaire tipping at a casino.

my hubby & i work the same way when it comes to tipping...if we got the cash and the service is good we hand it over (not 10k though...i wish i had that kinda money to throw around). once at our fav resturant we had a new waiter and he kept our drinks full (which we grade our servic on...each time the drink glass goes empty we count back the quarters) so we gave him like a $40 tip....mind you our bill was around $60.

i think though too since we both had worked in service jobs where you worked off tips you kinda understand what they go through personaly trying to make ends meet.

I'm not sure if this is true, but someone once told me about this Donald Trump story. His limo got a flat tire and the chaufer(sp?) didn't have a spare tire. So someone pulled over and gave him a tire. The dude didn't know DT was in there. So the chaufer asked him for his address so that he(DT, but didn't say it was him) could thank him.

Few weeks later DT sent him a thank you note for the tire, & in return paid the man's mortgage.

Hi sweetheart, so glad to see you making waves in Seattle. Now there is a market that desperately needs shaking up.

Well, it wasn't me, because I would never tip an Applebee's waitress like that in any way that could be traceable or taxable. I know the guy meant the best for her, but he's created a paper trail and enough publicity for the IRS and the state and local tax authorities to swoop down on her and slice a major portion off the top.

This is why manila envelopes were invented. You'll need the space because you will need to use $100 bills, unless you want to go to a federal reserve bank that may have an old store of Grover Clevelands (they don't print the $1K denominations anymore, so you have to make arrangements).

Dramatic tips require you to make sure they find their beneficiary, ensure confidentiality and protect her identity for tax purposes. My personal preference is to then vanish before she say a word to you. It should not be necessary, if you have made the right impression.

Now it's a bit different in SCs, where CC's allow you substantial spending muscle without having to lug around manila envelopes. But SCs are used to that kind of transaction, and there are far more people that need to be taken care of than in your typical Applebees.

You know she's gonna spend it all on NASCAR memorabilia and a shopping spree at Bebe.

And she might treat herself to a nice dinner. At TGIFriday's.

Wow! I would be jumping up and down and screaming, and then I'd tell my boss, "Sorry but I'm taking the rest of the week off." LOL

Yeah, hopefully the credit card doesn't bounce.

AAAHHHH!! I saw that on the news last night! They were interviewing her. Guess what she said she was going to spend the money on! First, she was going to vegas, then she was going to pay for her dad's surgery (okay, that one was good), then she was going to buy a a jeep!! I seriously had a laughing/omg what an idiot fit.

Yep, that's pretty much what did it for me ... about 5 years ago, I was unemployed and pretty damn broke, and then, 9/11 came along. Finding work was next to impossible back then, and yet, I managed to get a second job in the service industry (delivering pizzas ) ... and it was only then that I understood the importance of a good tip. (Not that I was a lousy tipper before - but it just opened my eyes as to just how important a good tip is.)

I remember, for instance, the time I delivered ~$120 worth of pizzas (I think it was like 16 or so, in total) and got a $3 tip. I was pretty pissed.

Those days are behind me now, and I am fortunate enough to make decent money, so now, I tip generously. Even if I am particularly displeased with the service, I still end up tipping a minimum of 15% ... it's very rare that I'll tip less than that. (Most of the time when service is "poor," it's not actually the server's fault...) For "good" service in a restaurant, I routinely tip 25%, sometimes more if the service was exceptional. My "average" tip is 20%... and to those who don't tip well because it "costs more," I say this to you: If you can't factor in the cost of the tip along with the cost of the service (the dinner, bar tab, etc.) - DON'T GO OUT! (Or go to a cheaper restaurant/bar/etc.)

Anyway. Naturally, I am equally generous in tipping dancers
