    Default Chemically Straightened Hair

My hair is naturally wavy and I'm an soooo tired of flat ironing it all the time. A few drops of sweat during a stage routine and I am having to run up to the dressing room to flat iron again.

So... I am considering getting my hair chemically straighened. Does anyone have any experience?

Yes, eventhough I have curly hair it changed the thickness of my hair forever. I had thick curly hair and now its thin and super wavy. My hair fell out in some spots and took about a year to regrow it. Also, it doesnt hold curl very well unless I break out the heavy duty hairspray.

Make sure your hair is as healthy as it can be before you do it. I hope your stylist is experienced in all types of hair and many kinds of straighteners. Ask her/him what brand or kind of straightener they will be using on your hair.

Wowzer, I am suprised it had that much long term effect. Isn't it the same as perm chemicals just used w/o the rods? OR do they use something different? I can't afford for my hair to be any thinner.

It thinned my hair also when I had it done. It made my hair very flat. Yes, it was straighter (although it still had a bit of wave) but it was extremely flat, and it was hard for me to get it to do anything.

I have very curly hair as well. I made the horrible mistake of having my hair chemically straightened before. I think sytlist must have used a product that was to strong for my hair. My hair fell out in clumps. It was very flat and just looked awful. I had to wear a hat almost every day even at work. It took me 3 years to get my hair back to normal. If you do get your hair chemically straightened please make sure that you go to a stylist who has a lot of experience in this and understands different textures of hair. I think now they have products that are a lot more gentle for your hair. This nightmare with my hair happened to about 8 years ago.

I have naturally curly, thick wavy hair. I've used chemical straighteners (relaxer) on a number of occasions and each time it ruined my curl pattern. I've had my hair over processed where it wouldn't straighten and I looked like a wet poodle when I tried to go back and wear it curly and I had fried, straight pieces all throughout the hair that wouldn't curl. I refuse to grow out a damaged mess. So, after cutting all the damage out of my hair (and waiting for it to grow back), I later decided to go with a less threatening option...

A texturizer. I have been tricked by stylists before that refuse to use an actual texturizer and run a relaxer through my hair. NOT GOOD! It needs to be a texturizer. It doesn't burn, like a relaxer/chemical straightener and it's designed to release the curl pattern in the hair gradually so that it will be easier to straighten and it'll be more resistant to reverting back to its natural state (curly) when you sweat, get caught in the rain, or are in a humid environment. A texturizer and a relaxer are not the same thing -- do not let the stylist convince you otherwise. There is a difference!

Yes, my curl pattern is different with the texturizer, but I still have beautiful curly, wavy hair -- it's just a tad bit thinner than it used to be because the curl pattern has been elongated. My hair is healthy and growing like never before and it's alot more manageable. The texturizer has not ruined my hair. I even have hair color with no damage. Please note that the secret to healthy, chemically-treated hair is to condition.

Also make sure starting out that a light/mild chemical process is applied to your virgin hair that way if it doesn't take and you need to re-do it -- at least it's not damaged and has caused irreversible repair that needs to be grown out or cut out. Look for a stylist that specializes in natural haircare -- stay away from stylists who are not familiar with your hair type they will ruin your hair experimenting with what works.

A chemical process should not be an experiment, if your stylist does not have other clients with your hair type RUN like hell to another stylist.

Get a Japanese straightening perm. I had one once, and loved it. It's costly but worth every penny.

^^ yah and umm anything DIY along those lines like at home perms...is a huge NO NO.

    my god the horror .

I had my hair straigthened chemically when I was a teen. One was with boards and this paste shit and others were just reverse perms. Uh no. Frizz... no flat irons then it sucked.

I did hear the japanese straightening perm is worth it though

    NO!

I had it done 6 years ago....and I have never recovered. I had thick super curly hair...and nowit's thin, frizzy, and coarse...and doesn't curl, just makes messy (not cute, just ugly)waves.

Look into the Japanese straightening treatment. I don't have wavy hair myself, but I know this girl who did it. Her hair is very curly and it came out straight and the shine was so damn glossy it would blind ppl if she stood out in the sun. No joke. Very shiney....and expensive, lol.

Go with the Japanese thermal reconditioning. It's actually good for your hair if your hair is dry also. In saying that, it being dry without being damaged. If your hair is damaged or has been coloured, many hairdressers will say no - be wary of ones that will say yes to doing your hair without checking it thoroughly. Only very well trained hairdressers with many years of experience will touch already treated hair.

Also ask them what products they are using. The best one around at the moment I think is the Shisheido recrystallization. It makes hair go very straight, with few rekinkings and isn't harsh on the hair. It is important that they are using a good product, anything cheap won't last and will wreck your hair.

I've had my hair straightened this way several times. It hasn't done any damage to my hair and has stayed straight until it's regrown, and even now, I have 9 months regrowth and it's still quite easy to tame just with a straightener in about 5 minutes - whereas straightening my hair would take about half an hour - 40 minutes previously.

It won't go curly when it gets wet and doesn't go frizzy - but you do have to start using good hair products, I recommend Redken - which is keeping the regrowth under control as well.

But you really do have to have virgin hair for this. The few strands that I had had streaked all went brittle, didn't stay straight, and eventually broke off, I was lucky as this was only like 2-3 little sections of hair.

This site will give you all the info you need: http://www.verticalsinhair.com/

And remember, if you do it this way, you can't get your wet whatsoever for the first 72 hours! But avoid the other harsh chemical hair straightening methods at all costs...
