What operating system do you have? Windows XP? Boneheaded question but roll with me here.

windows XP yep..
Click start, click "all programs" click accessories, then scroll down to system tools. Disk Defrag is in there.
However..
If your box is running slow, i'd suggest cleaning the spyware.
Download this...
Then run, and update it, if you need any help pm me. Then follow these instructions...
1) Reboot
2) Mash f8 once per second until you see a screen asking you what you want to boot. You'll know if it's the right screen if you see the words "safe mode".
3) Select the option safe mode (No networking needed, just safe mode.
4) Once it boots click start.
5) Find 'Lavasoft' somewhere in your programs.
6) Run adaware. Let it go. Be best to do so when you know no one will be using the computer, like bedtime, or worktime.
7) Come back to the sparkley clean PC and surf surf surf... It should run better. MUCH better.
also
Get yourself a good free virus scanner.

virus scan, spyware scan (adaware and xoftspy are good) then go to a command prompt and type in chkdsk c: /f/v/r/x, you may need to reboot and it can take ages, but it usually gets the slowness out.
-These days it is not viruses slowing down your system, it is spyware, and trojans. The occasional (like once a month) defrag is a worthy tool, if you keep spywayre and other shit off your system.

Tell me, if she doesn't know how to get to disk defragmenter... How can she know how to get to a command prompt?
I mean no offense by this.
1) Click start.
2) Click run. You will get a command box. Type in cmd. That will get you to a command prompt. Though how you could use one at that level of skill is beyond me. And that is truth, not me being condescending. A home user only needs to know what a home user needs to know, if they don't know something it's not a crime.
Try this. It'll also help.
Click start
Click run
Type in msconfig
click the tab on top that says 'startup'
Uncheck everything.

No offence madcap, I'm just busy with the process of getting things sorted in the US, you know even before Sep11 it was a pain in the ass. Now I'd rather have my teath pulled.
I figured somone (like you) would step in and explain where the command prompt was hidden.

I know how to get to disk defrag. just didnt know if i should do it. i started having problems with Limewire. Uninstalled it., but there are 2 files that just will not erase for some reason. maybe i just got too many photo programs on my PC. photoshow stuff, picture to movie stuff. dvd burner stuff. Bearshare. hmm...ill try all that command stuff....im good with PCs but some stuff is confusing. thx guys ill try!

The amount of things on your computer doesn't matter as much as the processes. Think about it, just like you a computer can remember anything without much hassle. But can you think of twenty things at once? You need to see what's continually running and cut that down. Run virus programs then defrag.

if you have a lot of empty space on your hard disk (im guessing 20% empty) defrag probably wont help much. its not a big deal to do it once and see if it improves things. do it overnight, in case it takes hours to do. you can also try deleting old things you no longer need or burn large files to cds or dvds.

The bit with the command prompt and chkdisk is much better than defrag, when you run it with the options I selected. If your having issues with the chkdsk comamnd, let me know what letters your HDs are and I'll email you a batch file, or I can post the text here and you can paste it into a file on your system.
Be warned I've seen it run 2 hours. That system has nearly 3 full 80gb sata drives.

Clean out your registry too. I suggest RegCleaner.
