Angry Primetime I am so pissed

Okay i seen a commerical for primetime for tonight they were advertising there speical on outsiders in america and tonight we as in we i mean strippers are the main story. Yes girls we are now outsiders i mean wtf. The ad stated it was about normal housewives who moonlight as strippers. Then i went on there website that had a statement that said something along the lines of women who have no prospects who would other wise be working for minium wage. arrr this mad me so mad i know all the sterotypes and i relize they are just playing on that for ratings but i have had enough of the shit in the media about us i mean if you don't like us leave us alone. What realy got me about this show spicficly is that we are labled OUTSIDERS. Its insane i am outraged.

Is anyone seriously challenging the notion that strippers are indeed outside of the mainstream?

I'm not seeing the problem, frankly.

In a sense maybe with that show stripping will be less glorified as "easy money" but instead as a job that has much left to be desired.

I watched this program (my wife was asleep on the couch....), and based on my years of club experiences, and several years of reading SW and SCJ, I believe it was one of the more accurate portrayals about the stripclub environment that I've seen in any media. I would be very interested in hearing from any dancers that saw the segment.

The only bad thing was that it was packaged with some other stupid segments on marrying cousins and swinging. But the stripper segment (done by Elizabeth Vargas) seemed pretty accurate. There was some suggestion that many dancers couldn't match their dancing income elsewhere, but who on this site would disagree?

Virtually every dancer interviewed stressed the fact that stripping is a job, that they work very hard, and they do their best to leave work at work when they go home (good advice for anyone).

My thoughts exactly. Strippers certainly are not "the norm," - we're the deviants.

I think this must be a repeat, I've seen it, too. Not bad, really. Most of the girls they interviewed seemed intellegent enough. There was even a gal who lived and went to school in Utah, and flew out to Vegas every weekend to work.

I thought this story was a huge step forward.

Primetime is not saying "outsiders" are bad--they are giving a voice to those who are usually considered outside of normal society.

I sent them the following thank you letter that pretty much sums up my thoughts on the piece. To anyone who thought the piece was relatively fair, I suggest you do the same. Lord knows we could all use more good press!

"I would like to commend you for the excellent piece you recently did on strippers. I have been a stripper on and off for about 7 years. I am 25 years old, have two college degrees, own my home, and am happily married. Your piece was incredibly fair, balanced, and surprisingly lacking in sensationalism. It portrays strippers in a way that they aren’t usually portrayed in the media—as regular people just doing their job. You clearly made a decision to represent the dancers’ points of view, which is a privilege women in the sex industry very rarely have. You did these women justice. My mind is still reeling at some of the points brought up—the complete lack of training or orientation, the (quasi-legal) high stage/house fees and tip-outs, the uninvited sexual advances. Primetime really cared enough to tell the women’s side of the story. Most are providing a fantasy or just a listening ear—not sex.

Your story will contribute to greater respect for women, rather than further disrespect and marginalization. I know it’s not the most important story in the world, but I’m glad you told it. Everyone behind it should be proud."

Watching the piece online right now. So far, I don't have an issue with what they are saying. I am actually kind of enjoying its honesty. "It's a Job, a real job pays real money." Well done story.

i thought the program was accurate for the most part.. I think a few of the girls were fudging their income figures a little bit...
