Default stand out or blend in?

When I started dancing, I stood out like a sore thumb -- Manic Panic hair, pale skin, weird outfits, etc. I made it my goal to look like a real stripper and a year and a half later, I've grown out my hair, tanned, bought the same two-piece outfits as every other girl at work, and as far as looks go, I pretty much blend right in. I wonder if that's a good thing or not. Can anybody compare their experiences as a typical/atypical-looking dancer? Is it good to stand out, or are you better off looking like "a stripper"?

Are you making more money now or with the way you looked before? Every club is different, and so is every girl. It's about finding the right look for *you* - the one that makes you the most money. If you're making more money now, then there's your answer.

Always better to stand out. It's not a sorority, it's an individual sales environment where it pays to do whatever you can to draw attention to yourself. One of the easiest ways to get custies' attention is to NOT look like everyone else - getting their attention is the first step in making an easy sale. You don't have to look like a freak, but it definitely helps to look different.

I wear 'weird' outfits. I've had lots of girls look at me sideways and even ask me stupid questions like "you're not going on stage with that are you?" - while the male staff are wagging their tongues and nodding approvingly, and the custies' heads are all turning to look. One dumbass girl even commented in the dressing room about one of my absolute fave outfits last week - "damn girl you got some CRAZY outfits! and you ain't even playin! look at that!!" I think she thought that would make me feel bad and throw it off to put something else on, like all the other girls at this club do

I just smile and look down pitifully at their ever-so-boring bikini 'uniform' - the same worn-out outfit they wear every single night becuase they think it's their "money outfit", and then I go right out and make more money than them I get a lot of custy compliments on my 'weird' outfits. The thing is though, they're really not that weird; they're just not the same boring bikini crap that everyone else wears and they are probably more sexually stimulating than the standard bikini.

Anyway, point is, it's better to stand out. Makes it easier to make money.

^^^Now you've got me curious. What do you wear that makes you stand out so much?

In general, I'd rather look like an individual than just another stripper, but I used to feel like that lost me money. I wore corsets and garterbelts and felt like I was always losing money to girls in pink binikis and whatnot. I definitely make better money now, but it could be that my sales skills have just improved. That's why I'm curious about others' experiences.

^^^ Yeah I personally believe that there are some things you can get away with and if you go too much overboard it can work against you in stripping if your a punky / goth / alternative chick. For me, my hair and footwear and personality make me stand out. If I do anything more than that I have to deal with customers "taken aback factor" or their curiosity which wastes alot of time - Im guessing that you'll know what I mean (-:

I find that blending more ordinary outfits works more of the time more often with customers than wearing something "unusual". Or at least going with softer colours for the more unusual outfits. Ie a pretty white lace corset style top works well for me and people think it's sexy without asking questions. If I wear black PVC in a simular style it seems to scare people and make them cautious in approaching me although I have seen "normal" looking dancers pull it off. It's just a matter of finding that happy medium I supose.

for me, standing out as the goth-looking dancer often worked in my favor. however, i had to play it up to match the image. also, guys who would want the traditional blonde barbie type stripper probably went for other girls. overall, standing out worked for me.

i try to look differnt but in a way that is also sexualy symbolic so it makes sense the guys. i have short hair i make flippy and curly, im very pale and never tan, im skinny and have small boobs. it sounds differnt but i go with the blond bombshell marilyn type thing. i wear lots of very feminin black dresses or sets, i wear alot of thigh highs, i even do the eyeliner red lipstick thing and guys really go for it. i think any look will work as long as it is some variety of an established look, if its beachy, or dom, or rock and roll, or glam. just not to extreme and it should work.

Well aussie you don't have to wear outfits to look different so the regular stuff obviously will be great for you! It is most definitely relative.

Grace, I wear alot of bodystockings, corsets and such. I love thigh boots and get alot of attention with them. Also I'll sometimes find some stuff that's a bit more "normal" but not quite. A pink VS garter skirt with a black fishnet top isn't too wild, but it conveys a bit of a wild look when worn with black ankle boots and a studded collar. I have a wild multi-colored long jumpsuit and a hot pink long-sleeved gown that both glow like nobody's business - both make me look like a friggin beacon in the night!

One of my absolute FAVE outfits is a black/white checkerboard crotchless bodystocking with a lime green thong and lime green garter on my thigh. It glows under the blacklights (so does the thong, sticking out from the hole in my crotch) and makes me stick out like a giant neon sign. And of course the neon green thong only adds to the effect, makes like a bullseye. I'll wear this with my hot pink glowing wristband that says "fuck" all over it and a studded collar. It is not the kind of thing every girl can pull off but it damn well works for me. Opens up all kinds of one-liner and wise-cracking possibilities, which I use to sell dances. This is the outfit, btw, that the girl was yapping about in DR last week. Unless the girls have seen me wear it before, I'll have to field all sorts of stupid questions about why I'm wearing it or whether I'm really going on stage with it. These chics have NO creativity I tell ya! I always make money in this. (Well, I pretty much always make money anyway, but that's beside the point )

Next fave is a corset. I have a red/black PVC one that I'll use with just a thong and fishnet thigh highs, or with black shorts and boots, etc. Also a pink/black lycra one that I'll wear with something similar to the other, or with a pink foofy tulle skirt.

I've also worn this with good results:

I wear gowns or shorts sometimes too, but I like colors and styles that aren't exactly common and I prefer to find odd pieces and put them together to make my own little outfit.

So, there's nothing all that crazy about anything I wear, I guess it's more how I wear it most the time. Although I have NEVER seen another girl wear the checkerboard or that fluffy skirt at work

I would bet almost anything that the reason you make more money now has everything to do with your improved sales skills and little or nothing to do with your outfits. I say go with your own style and don't be afraid to try new stuff. Sometimes a lack of confidence can ruin the best outfit.

I love standing out but I've also blended in. How do I put it?... hmmm..

I've tanned a little, but my glasses make me stand out. I got more sexual things pierced but I dance to swing music. I wear bikini tops but I wear petticoat bottoms.

Stand out partially and blend in partially.

You want to stand out while still fitting into the same category. Memorable, but still stripper.

standing out has worked for me. one customer picked me and another dancer out just because we looked different (me: shaggy red hair, athletic body, classy velvet, choker. she: goth'd-out hard ass). different people like different things. mix it up a bit and see what works best. i once saw a dancer wear a pocahontas-type outfit with moccasins instead of heels and it produced fantastic results for her.

^^ Hehe. I call the checkered thing with the lime green thong my winner outfit. I got the checkered flag, the winner's circle (hole in crotch) and the green flag all in one

    Car race reference....

And you should see my stripper closet, and my office! I've got enough clothes to outfit a club full of girls for like a week
Course most of it is stuff for the website, but still.

I also blend in while standing out... That sounds so funny!

I wear thigh highs and big rhinestones, black dresses and lace, red lipstick and dark sultry eye makeup, and pale skin. All of that makes me stand out, but the ba, great ass, long straight alburn hair and french manicure make me look like a stripper. It's a good combo, and guys love the slow reveal of taking off a dress and lingiere

I think any "look" will work (eg. Goth, barbie doll) If you have the attitude to go along with it! (eg. Having your game face on, looking like you really believe your hot in "that" outfit)

Yep and I have thought about getting them, but I don't likewearing arm warmers. I'm always friggin burning up at work so I figure those would only make it worse.

I wear almost all "traditional" lingere from Victoria's Secret, and never stripper clothes. This makes me stand out as noone else in my club wears stuff like this, but I still look sexy and mainstream.

Hmmm well, I didn't make so much with the combination of huge pink and purple mohawk, drag queen makeup, tattoos, septum piercing and pale skin. My market was far too small, but the guys who loved me REALLY loved me.
Now, I tip the scales toward normal a bit more. While I still have some of those things (a big tattoo that says "Evil Cunt" on my stomach is kind of hard to hide and sometimes causes an interruption in my hustle), I also mix a bit of different with normal. I am unique, but not completely unapproachable.

Now I have long blonde braids (pretty, but still a bit eccentric) and a tan. I take out my piercing when I go to work. I tone down my makeup a little (although I will forever have drawn on eyebrows because I hate my own).
I don't wear black nail polish so much anymore. I don't dance to completely unrecognizable industrial/techno on a regular basis (only when it's slow and I want to entertain myself by breaking up the monotony of all the shitty R&B). And I certainly don't mope in the corner or tell people to "suck my dick" when they refuse a dance like a lot of the goth/alt. dancers I've known.

Oh and my outfits are somewhat borderline too. I have a crazy neon pink leopard print skirt and top that really draws attention. I avoid leather, PVC and spikes because most men don't want a dominatrix (some do, but I'd rather appeal to the others as well). I usually try to dress like a gay prostitute. In real life too.

i'm not a different person for work, but i HAVE to tone it down. i don't make as much money with all my facial piercings in. i hate it and i wish it wasn't true, but i know it is... so i take most of them out. i also tend to wear clothes that cover some of my tattoos. i know girls with tats make money elsewhere, but not anywhere around here. the guys here seem to be really into the typical stripper look.

and there i go being bitter about it again today.

^^Since when does the "typical stripper look" NOT include tattoos?? LOL!! I know that I am in the extreme stripper minority with my complete lack of tattoos, and you wouldn't believe how many guys look at me and say "wow! you don't have any tattoos?!?! omg that's unusual! I like that!!"

I agree about keeping the freak on a leash LOL If I were to dress the way I reeeeaaally wanted at work I might scare some people

the stripper look includes a tattoo or two of some butterflies, flowers, someones name, or something else considered to be "ok". it doesn't include tattoos of comic book characters being stabbed.

which comic book characters?? (sorry i'm a comic nerd, and have to know!)

i just got my first tat a few weeks ago, something a bit unusual. it's a naked woman wrestling a lion. very hot, very sexy. very not something you'd see on a girl. most guys are impressed that a *gasp* girl sat under the needle for that long to get actual artwork.
