Sad The poor puppies & kitties

I just made a donation here, as well as since this is in my area i'll be volunteering with the baby but this really is sad because the animals (5wk old kikttens included) are all on this list to be put down that week. Whatever is left at the end of the day goes home with foster mommys and d addys rather then back to the shelter to be put down that night. This is just to sad

I just ranted about this to my best friend yesterday. We both have cats that were not procured from a breeder or pet store. I am *furious* that people continue to buy their cute little kittens and puppies at pet stores and neglect shelter pets. The stray population is ridiculous and these wonderful animals need somewhere to go. These pet store animals are not "better" than shelter pets. If anything, they suffer from greater problems than shelter animals (can we say puppy farms?). And if one wants a specific breed, they're out there. Purebreeds get abandoned just as often as mutts.

Before getting a new furrball, an owner should consider how much of a responsibility a new pet would be. If I had a dime for every animal in a shelter that was abandoned because "it was too much work," I would buy a huge farm and adopt every shelter pet in my state. Once buying a pet, the owner should have it neutered or spayed ASAP. My current kitten had already had a litter when I found her in a shelter (her previous owner moved away when she got to be "too much work"). Mind you, my kitten was 9 months when she had her litter- definitely old enough to be spayed. Here's a tip: spay and neuter your pets and they won't have litters- less work!

I am sick and tired of dogs and cats being abandoned because they grow up. Pets age! That's what they do. There's no way to freeze them in cute kitten and puppyland forever. Just because they grow up, that is no excuse to care for them any less. Parents aren't allowed to leave their kids when they stop being cute. If you are not in it for the long haul, then don't get a pet. SIMPLE!!!

Hundreds, if not thousands, of wonderful pets are killed (screw the euphemism "put down") every week in overburdened shelters. This has to stop. I donate to my local humane society (they refuse to kill, spay and neuter every pet ) and I hope the rest of you set aside at least a little money to save these wonderful animals.

Wow, that ended up a lot more rant-y than I intended. Sorry

Whilst I am focused more on wildlife than domesticed animals I do support the Animal Protection League here locally through visiting their OP shop (as they do have some nice stuff in there if you hunt for it). I would love to work at the actual shelter however they have a waiting list since sooo many people want to work at the shelter itself.

Personally, the cat I have (Bibs - www.goldcoastgirl.com for pictures) who is going 14 next year (I'm so proud she has lived so long!) was originally purchased from the shelter. I love her to death. Yes she is older now however she is adorable now just as she was when she was younger.... even if she has picked up some not so nice traits from the other cat in the house (grr) I love her unconditionally.

Definately getting another cat (not kitten) from the shelter. I actually don't want a kitten now that I am used to an older cat and I realise how hard it is for the shelter to find homes for the cats over the kittens.

People so need to spay/neauter their animals. There is absolutely no sane reason not to these days. Seriously.
