    Default Union Jacks Portland

I have been in Portland for a month got my own apartment now (thanks to a wealthy benefactor) and I am ready to release the stress of a sugar daddy (who I haven't ever met) who doesn't want me to dance and have decided to DANCE.

My car is on the fritz and I dont' have the time or patience to sugar coat the fact I partied last weekend to the SD so I am going to be carless. Union Jacks is literally 4 minutes or 40 blocks from my house via line 20.

Is it safe to take the bus to work. The stop is right outside my door and it seems to be right across the street from UJ.

Also is it mandatory for me to have the alternative look. I am more of Blonde Glamazon.

I was totally dismayed by the idea of ever taking the bus to and from work before I was here, but now I do it all the time, in the same area. The neighborhood of UJ's is pretty safe.

I ride the bus to work, or ride my bike. Lots of the girls I work with do it.

Portland is pretty safe, and yeah, a lot of dancers who work at the more central clubs take public transportation, especially during day or mid shifts. You of course still want to be smart by dressing down and being careful about stashing your money, but in an area like that, especially where there are always a lot of people due to restaurants and clubs in the area,
I'd think you'd be just fine.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention -- my primary defense when I'm going to be walking around anywhere at night is dressing like a boy, jacket and jeans and sneakers.

I've never been hassled or anything when walking P-town. I did buy some pepper spray as a sense of security. Also, invested in some brass knuckles (more because they were cool) but I've never actually walked around with them. My police man friend has told me to take a C size battery around and clench it in my fist, makes you hit harder, and no concealed weapon charges can be taken against you. But again, NEVER been hassled or even more than an acknowledgment smile during the night. People are always very social during the day though.

Fuck that. Last week I had to walk a couple of blocks alone in Portland along Sandy Blvd in a nice/busy area early on in the night. I had one old guy on a bike follow me and ask "Do you like to get fucked in the ass?" (see below on how I successfully dealt with it), one guy catcall, one guy try to talk to me from across the street, a car full of kids honk, and several guys watching/staring at me. I was NOT wearing stripper clothes. I was not even working that day; I was just the regular me. I would NEVER take the bus to and from work, and definitely not walk or ride a bike. Jesus.

As far as the old nasty guy on the bike, I just made eye contact and yelled at him - the same way you're supposed to act if a predator like a cougar is after you. He got confused/scared and pedalled off. I carried a hunting knife with me after I'd picked up what I needed at home and headed back out.

The men in Portland are SERIOUSLY fucked up compared to the men on the east coast. Even during the daytime they will stare at/follow you, especially if they are older, if you are alone or even with another girl. Men here are lonely, desperate, sleazy, and ignorant. I have walked alone in NYC at night (seriously) and no one fucked with me. I will never walk in Portland at night alone again without being armed with a knife or mace, and I would even consider a gun or tazer if I had proper training.

Report from experience and nothing more...

... I don't know of any area along Sandy that I'd consider "nice" by my standards, or willingly walk along at night... that's one of the streets that are known for streetwalking, along with 82nd and parts of downtown.

(I got this information from an online report by men looking for streetwalkers, FYI. They complained that Portland didn't have a true red light district, but that going in a triangle from downtown to Sandy to 82nd was the way they did business.)

Admittedly, while we're talking about areas, there isn't much on the eastside further north than Glisan or further east than 50th that I would be willing to touch. Pretty much, between Division and Burnside, below 50th, is fairly pleasant in my experience.

    It's maybe a four-square-mile area that I think is totally civilized. :-)

Hawthorne and Burnside (on the eastside, between about 8th and 50th,) I've both walked along at 2 in the morning multiple times with no trouble. UJ's is at roughly 11th and Burnside.

As with everything . . . mileage may vary. I've noticed that there are some spots (anywhere within four blocks of the Burnside bridge on either side) where I don't feel that it's terribly unsafe but I do get some catcalls, etc, if I'm not dressed very masculine that night.

And every time I go out to 82nd to visit a big-box store or something, I'm struck by the fact that EVERYONE AROUND ME IS A DEAD-EYED METH ZOMBIE. So, no, I won't take the bus out there!

i work at union jacks and feel perfectly safe biking to and from work there. as for having an alternative look to get hired, its not necessary. more important that you have an individual look. theres been a lot of new girls this past two weeks and the schedule has been packed which means less money per girl overall. id recommend waiting a few weeks before you audition for some of the new girls to drop out.

I think it'd be fine as long as you exercise some street smarts. I bus to the clubs I work at often (though probably less now that the weather's getting icky). At my club I often see this one girl leave, wearing full make-up and with long extensions, in sweatpants and carrying her roll-around suitcase with her, sitting at the bus stop DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF the sign for the club. Now... that is really unsafe and a sure "rob me" sign. But I'm sure that's not what you mean.

Thank you everyone!!! I am still scared to go to UJ I want to get a pole in my apartment first. So I am just going to try a low key club no ones heard of for a while til I am back in shape.

I worked at a juice bar downtown and seriously messed up my knees they had huge scabs on them for over a week and still have at least another day til it's all healed. ARGHHHH!!! So much for making rent... even my acrylics need a fill right now!

As for street smarts, I have hitchiked the west coast and just hitchiked back from seaside this weekend when I missed the greyhound... no worries there =P

The club I worked at downtown wouldn't let me walk home... ok ok it was 2am, the bus wasn't running anymore but all I had to do was walk down the street TWO BLOCKS to a friends apartment downtown and I would have been fine but "we have to watch you when you leave" what kind of bullshit is that. I mean I would appreciate it if this was some dark alley but this was DOWNTOWN. I didn't make shit and had to pay the cab driver like $8 to go 4 blocks *red light red light red light* after they took $15 of the $28 I made that left $13 then to take a cab with tip I had $3 then I had to buy smokes..... and dig out the change LOL

Hey sweetie.... I went there last night as a custy, just to check it out, and only saw a girl on the pole once. I'd say, don't worry! Do it and have a great time!
