    Sad First Shift

Well, I worked my first shift last night.... Only came home with $75. There were a few girls who didn't even come home with that much (and a few who came home with a LOT MORE) so people have told me not to get discouraged, especially since it was my first time...... but I only sold 3 private dances the whole night! I tried, but it seemed like everyone was going for the tall, modelesque girls. I got so discouraged and so down on myself when I got told no! To quote an old song, it made me feel so damn unpretty.

I have kind of an "alternative" look and I'm REALLLLLY short, but I tried to normalize myself out last night. Do you girls think I should play up the altchick thing? Do you think I'd make more money? There's nothing I can do about being short and fairly curvy... I can't be one of the tall, thin girls. What can I do to be one of the girls that guys go to? Should I play to a specific niche or try to stay as mainstream as possible?

Also, do any of you short-haired girls have tips on how to look a little more cute and feminine? I'm having a bit of trouble with my hair right now. It currently looks like this:

Any advice/ words of encouragement? I feel totally frumpy and gross right now.

If you're shorter/curvier then just re evaluate your crowd. Go for the older guys. Try a few day shifts, when the older men and the lunching/ taking off early business men show up. Basically, you want the guys who had Marilyn Monroe as a sex symbol as opposed to heroin chic.

And, also (and I can say this, cause I'm a size eight - and would never be able to be a 2 if I tried) stop comparing yourself. Don't look at body types of other girls. Focus on YOU. Beleive you are the hottest chick in the room and the guys will beleive you. I'm top earner at my club six nights out of seven, and no where NEAR the smallest, or the tallest.

You'd fit in fine at the places where I go. I suspect you'll do better than most after a short time where you are if you don't let paranoia get the better of you.

Your problem was probably that you got down on yourself. You probably didn't work as hard as you could've JUST because you were too busy focusing on everyone else who DID get dances. How did you know people made more or less than you? YOU SHOULD NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH OTHERS MAKE! Why? It means you're not paying attention to YOURSELF? The -only- reason I know I'm a top earner is when other girls complain TO ME of their low income and how they wish they were ME because they see ME upstairs all the time. Why?! because I'm not MOANING to them about how I didn't make any money and I'm jealous of the way they look or sell.

You do NOT have an alternative look. Not one bit. Sorry, that's not your problem.

You need to focus on YOUR money. On how happy YOU are. On how YOU can make YOUR night better.

Who the fuck cares what everyone else is making? You don't work for them.

Suck it up. Forget the 'no's. Believe in yourself and stop comparing yourself to everyone else.

    You'll do much better.

I think that you are very beautiful. Try to think of your first couple of weeks as training for this business. There are many aspects of this industry that make so much more sense to me now than they did when I first started. When I first started in the biz I thought I would just make money if I was the best looking. It took me a while to realize that there is so much more to this job than just looking good. Positive Attidude is everything. Stay focused on the money. Don't pay attention to any of the other girls and how much money they are making. I made this mistake when I first started. Just relax, stay positve, and not matter how you feel act very confident. Confidence sells in this industry. The custys can tell when you lack confidence. Congratulations on your first night!!!

Dont base your first night on how the rest will go. I think everyones first night was mostly awful. I agree with the other girls: focus on yourself. It is funny how the best looking girls are not always the top earners. Ive seen many chics who can rock a less than conventional look and do well. Your problem is not your looks...you look fine.

Its like guys can sense lack of confidence and will pass you over. Confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can wear. I always wear my favorite outfit on a not so great day and look in the mirror and tell myself Im hot.

Looks are only so much in the business. Sales is what really matters. Sales will get you what you want.

I know I shouldn't have been paying attention to how much the other girls were making.... It was a huge mistake and I'm not planning on it being that way again. I knew how well the other girls were doing because they told me, and they knew how poorly I was doing at the end of the night because they looked. There's a clipboard right in front of the VIP room that tells how many dances each girl has sold, and EVERYONE looks at it.

I was on a roll for about the first hour or so, and I had about 3 dif. girls walk up to me and go "Wow! You've already sold 3, I haven't sold any...." blah blah blah. That information being kept out in the open like that kind of made me uncomfortable. I don't know if it's SUPPOSED to be out in the open, but everyone treats it like it is.

I DO need to keep my chin up. Next time I work is Sunday night, which will be a slow night. I'm going in not expecting anything except to maybe learn a few pole tricks and get a bit more comfortable with being on stage. I'm gonna put my piercings back in because frankly, I felt naked without them. I've had my piercings since my 18th birthday and they've become so much a part of me that I feel uncomfortable without them. I'm gonna take the money that I made the other night and buy myself something cute to wear.

As for now, I must go perform in front of 55,000 screaming football fans in the pouring rain.

Oh my. You are delectable! If you worked at my club, I'd, well, ahem, nevermind. And don't worry about your first night. In fact, don't worry about your first few nights, maybe even your first few weeks, if you're the kind of person who takes a little while to acclimatize to new things. Read the threads in the Hustle Hut, read sales books (you can search on here to find good titles), and above all, don't let a bad night, or hour, or whatever, affect your self-image. They happen to everyone sometimes, no matter how hot or not, and letting it affect your self-esteem is the best way to fuck yourself, and your money, up in this business. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

    That is awesome.

Take it easy on yourself; you just started. As far as hair goes, sparkly barrettes go a long way towards glamming up short hair.

I'm going back in there tonight and I'm just going to have fun with it. It's a Sunday so I'm not expecting it to be a high-dollar night. Just a night to sort of familiarize myself with my surroundings and how things work around there. I need to start stretching NOW, though! The cold, rainy weather mixed with flagging at yesterday's football game has left me SOOOORE and extremely stiff.

As for my hair, I tried something on Friday night and it had GREAT results: I'd been kinda clipping my bangs back 'cuz i was gonna grow 'em out, but I have a HUGE scar on my forehead (a teatherball pole fell on my head when I was 5) that I'm kinda paranoid about, so I took out a pair of scissors and gave myself sort of diagonally tapered sideswept bangs and I got SO many compliments. It makes the cut look a lot sexier and more femme/ retro.

Our club lets us bring in our own music, so right now I'm making a mix CD of music that I like to dance to. I'm putting together a bag of my favorite outfits. I bought myself a new eyeshadow pallette at Lancome. It's the little things, I think.....

Plus, my friend who got me started there is working tonight. We're carpooling (30 min. drive to the club) so I'll be able to talk to her, ask any remaining questions I may have and get a bit of moral support. Since it's a slow night, she's gonna teach me some pole tricks and things of that sort. I'm pretty pumped....

and pumped is half the battle.

Good for you! I was just going to say, usually when I am feeling down I will switch thigs up a bit; try a different look with makeup, accessorize, change your hair a bit. Even though that might not be a big deal to the patrons, it will make you feel better about yourself and THATS what the customers will notice. You're just starting out, too. No worries! Remember the summer months are usually slower. Hopefully it will pick up all around soon. Also remember, every dancer has her day. Some days you will make bank and others might be awful. Money from tips is like a christmas present; you won't know what's in the box until you open it. Don't get discouraged though; that is the absolute worst thing you can do. Good luck to you!

Hey, don't get down o yourself. You can't say that all guys want tall modelesque girls, because they don't! And I'm short too... about 5'2". My defense: 8inch stripper heels/platforms. The money will pick up soon also... it's kinda crappy over here too. Just hang on!

Last night, despite being horribly slow, was a great night for me to feel things out.... and our club was nice enough to let us get away with not paying the house fee 'cuz it was so dead in there.

It's getting better all the time.

Girl just because we're short, doesn't mean we're not normal! Hang in there though, $75 could be just the tip of the iceberg.

I think you are....ADORABLE... Vey sexy! (not to be weird)
Do not get discouraged... You got yourself hired, you clearly have the confidence to do what the job requires because YOU DID IT. The hustle will come with time.

You have gotten GREAT responses from the ladies (gentleman too I think) on the board, take their advise to the BANK! I get into to funks where I compare my 1 dancing, 2 looks, 3 persontality, 4 etc and IT ALWAYS EFFECTS MY MONEY.

$75 a night is nothing to scoff at for you first night on the pole, and happens to us girls whose first night was years and years ago too.... 'SPECIALLY around this time of year.

Do something for yourself before working that makes you feel great and sexy!
KNOW that you are the hotness!
    Work with that...

    Lots and lots of

You will do great things!!! and make $$$!!!

Well, it's not an issue anymore anyway....

I decided to be honest with my parents and it didn't go too well. They said if I continued, they'd stop paying my tuition....

Eeeek. Needless to say, I had to quit..... but I miss it already!
