When antibiotics mess with birth control

So I'm all done with my antibiotics (yay!) and I'm on probiotics now. I didn't have sex when I was on augmentin for ten days, EXCEPT for the last day. I had accidentally skipped a dose somewhere along the way, so I had took my second to last pill at 1130 pm, and then my last pill at 1130ish the next day but I had sex in between that.

actually, I had a lot of sex in between that

but I'm wondering because in the past when I've been on antibiotics where it might affect the birth control I was using condoms, or withdrawal. With my current partner, I don't. So, he came in me one of the times and didn't the other times, but I'm wondering how augmentin (or other antibiotics) seriously affect birth control. Is birth control still dependable or does antibiotics completely negate them? Plus, I'm on depo, so it's not as if it's a pill to pill death match.

    any ideas?

Antibiotics do interfere with hormonal birth control. You won't automatically get pregnant, but your chances are about the same as they'd be if you weren't taking the pill. Anytime you take an antibiotic, if you are on the pill, use a condom or other backup until after your next period. (That means that if you take an antibiotic through the first week of your cycle, you need to keep using the backup even after you have finished the antibiotic, until your next period.)

By the way, this also holds true for St. John's Wort, an herbal supplement that many people take for mild depression. It will interfere with the birth control pill too and make it unreliable.

If you don't like condoms and you are in a trustworthy relationship where you only have to worry about pregnancy and not disease, I recommend the vaginal contraceptive film as a backup. They're little squares of papery stuff; you just fold it up and insert it up by your cervix, and in about 20 minutes it dissolves into a thick spermicidal barrier. You wake up in the morning feeling a little gooey, but that's what showers are for.

When I used to be on depo and had to go on antibiotics, my doc said that antibiotics don't affect the depo, it only affects the pill (it affects something that has to do with the body's ability to absorb the hormones in the pill I believe). So you shouldn't have a prob if you're on depo.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

I would go get the Morning after pill aka Plan B from planned parenthood. Asap. Just incase.

You can get pregnant easy on the pill with antibotics IF you would be around the time in your cycle that you would be ovulating , 2 weeks after your period. Its just way more likely.

Can i just say that People should use the "sponge" as a backup method. I love that thing.

^last time I got a period was two years ago so I have no idea when I used to normally ovulate. I don't notice body/mood differences according to time of month like I used to.

I looked info up on the internet and scientifically there's not a lot to back up the idea that antibiotics do interfere with DEPO (or even in a lot of cases bc pills), but reading Xiomara's response now I'm worried. aargh.

can you just call your doctor and ask? I mean if you got depo you must see your doctor pretty regularly so I'm sure he/she wouldn't mind a call to ask about that.
