    Default Todays sponge

I posted bout this on another thread but Im wondering if anyone else has used it. I'm so over birthcontrol pills I could fucking scream!

I've been on mircette for a year now and have had nothing but fucking issues. I can't skip my periods very well on it, I tend to be an emotional wreck or easy to cry ..easy to anger. When Im off the pill for my monthly I have no problems. The first week back on im off the charts...god help you if you are around me during PMS.

The point is the hormones are starting to effect more then just me. Im becoming "that" girlfriend. You know the intense crazy one that bloats, cries and binges on foods.

I've done depo.. got pregnant on it. No idea how. i've done just about every other form like the patch which i love but i was more prone to BV using it and also I cant hide it with my job. I've been on Yasmin, Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and Ortho Tri Cyclen, now Mircette.

Lo I spotted on. Regular Ortho is still an " option " I think it just made my headaches worse. but Yasmin and Mircette make me insane.

So the sponge is about to be my new best friend. Does anyone use this reguarly ? Know anything about this?

    Am I sponge worthy?

    I use the sponge!

Well, let's see. It makes my cervix bleed a bit- I think it's the spermicide, but anyways there's always a bit of blood on the sponge when I remove it. A bit troubling, but no big deal.

I'm assuming you're familiar with your body- it HAS to be placed RIGHT OVER the cervix.I'm convinced that the failure rate is in large part due to girls just shoving it 'up there' and crossing their fingers.

It's a bit pricey (at least up here), but you can wear it for 12 hours or something, so if you're doing several rounds, it's actually cheaper than condoms!

You can put it in hours before the action, which means no loss of spontanaeity.

That's all, I'm a fan. Oh, and I didn't get preggers using it as primary birth control, though I also used a fertility moniter.

    does it promote yeast infections?

I think im okay with the spermicide as long as its not on condoms. because the latex and the Nox 9 do fuck me up.

I couldn't take Ortho Tri-Cyclen either. It gave me the worst damn acne the world has ever seen, and my skin is generally fairly clear (aside from minor breakouts just before my period). When I was on that pill, I looked like a body they'd just pulled from the embers of a housefire. These huge, quivering pustules everywhere... YUCK. I switched to Levlen and have been taking that for about four years now. I love it.

My gynecologist told me that it may promote urinal tract infections, but she didn't say anything about yeast ones.

I always loved the idea of the sponge but everytime I used them they left me reeking like I had BV (which I didn't) otherwise I would have used them more.

Hey. Nice Elaine ref. When was the sponge brought back? I thought it was banned or what not.

Anyway, I looked up the pregnancy rates on the sponge. With "perfect use," it's 20%. With "typical use," it's 40%. The withdrawal and rhythm methods are more effective. The stats are according to the FDA. (For ladies who have never been pregnant, the rates are 9% and 20%.)

Have you tried the nuva ring? It's the only thing I can use besides the patch *which I can't use for work either* the pills make me sick as hell. Never tried the today sponge though, good luck!

I haven't tried the ring. It really hasn't appealed to me. Im trying to stray from hormones if I can help it. Since they dont seem to be agreeing with me.

My biggest issue is I rather have a mental break down than BV any fucking day. And sticking something up there frightens me since I get yeast infections and BV easily because im sensitive.

I haven't had either in a long ass time. Its one of those that when I get a new partner I have one bad episode or a switch in birthcontrol. sucks but thats when I have that stuff.

I dont have a gyno to ask these questions to I wonder about those online ask a nurse sites.

I don't usually get yeast infections anyways, so I don't know if the sponge promotes them (I never got one)...but I am very prone to bladder infections, and have not had one since I started using the sponge.

I think the sponge's failure rate is too high to consider it as your primary birth control, but I do recommend it as a secondary back-up bc.
As long as you are monogamous and do not have to worry about STD's, the sponge is way better than condoms. You can insert a sponge hours ahead of time, and have spontanous sex without digging for a condom at the last second. Your guy won't have to complain about the loss of sensation caused by condoms. BUT, my guy has said that he can feel it up there, that it didn't feel bad, just that was a little wierd--though still a better feeling than a condom.

After all is said and done, the first time you have to stick a finger up there to dig the thing out can be a tad awkward. After some practice its a peice of cake. There does seem to be an occasional funny smell, but frankly I think sperm that have been fermenting in the vagina for hours always smell funky. I'm not sure if the smell is from sperm or from the spermicide, but I tend to think it is indeed the typical fermented sperm odor.

I never experienced a yeast infection, BV, or a UTI while using the sponge. My overall experience with them was a positive one.

It's not the best primary method, for sure.

The dosage on the nuvaring is far less- I mean FAR less- than what you take with BCPs. Some of my friends who could not take the pill are really happy on the Nuvaring.

    I would consider it.

i'm thinking about the nuvaring, and considering i wouldnt have to take a damn pill everyday, i like the idea-- i have tried ortho tri cyclen (in highschool), yasmin, mircette(also in hs) and thepatch... the patch is by FAR the absolute worst-- theres about 3 times as much hormones in it as the pill... my migraines were horrible on it...

I used the patch for a while, and never had problems, even problems dancing with it on. Of course I worked at a pretty dive-y place at the time, and the guys were excited because they thought that was proof I was having sex. Wouldn't work at some places, though.

I just started using it last week, while waiting for my next period so I can start on Nuvaring. It's been great in terms of still allowing for spontaneity, but even when I put the sponge in a few hours before getting it on there's still a slightly medicinal taste while he's going down on me. Doesn't seem to deter him, just makes me slightly self-conscious.

He usually can't feel it, except for one time where I was on top and the loop chafed him a little bit.

I know I've been using it correctly, but I'm still slightly nervous because if a condom breaks at least you can run to the drugstore and buy some Plan B. But Aunt Flo is supposed to come visit in less than 2 weeks, so I'm pretty sure all will be fine.

I've been thinking about using it on top of the Nuvaring during the first month while it kicks in. Anyone have any experience with that?

No experience here but a gf of mine tried both (at the same time) and was fine, however she could have just been lucky. I would be worried about the interference between the nonoxyno in the Today Sponge and the hormones in the Nuvaring. I don't know if the combination of both would cause the ring be to less effective, you would have to somehow find out.

I just did a google search and apparently the Today Sponge and Nuvaring can be used on top of one another.

    Who Can Use:
Just about any woman who can use a tampon can also use the sponge. The Today Sponge may be an appealing birth control choice for women who:
Prefer to use a non-hormonal contraceptive method

Are on-the-go and want the convenience of contraception only when needed

Are breastfeeding and desire a hormone-free option

Prefer a non-systemic contraceptive (one that is not absorbed into the bloodstream)

Are not good candidates for or who have experienced unwanted side effects from hormonal birth control

Wish to avoid some of the side effects that may occur with taking hormonal methods

Need a back-up method to the pill, the patch, or NuvaRing in the event user error or if taking a medication that lowers the effectiveness of their hormonal method

I heard from a nurse in the STD clinic that Nonoxynol 9 causes internal lesions and was contributing to a slightly more rapid spread of HIV. I thought they stopped selling it because of this.

I think what happened was that they had to upgrade the manufacturing process in order to keep making it and the company stopped producing it for a while because of the increased costs, but then started manufacturing the sponge again to the newer standards after public demand for the sponge increased. I don't know the exact specifics, but but that's what I've heard repeatedly about why the sponge was taken off the market for a few years and then brought back.

Non-9 doesn't cause internal lesions, per se, but it does irritate some women to various degrees, and that can slightly increase the chances for STI transmission.

Luckily, this isn't a problem for me, since we've both had our tests done, all is fine and we have no interest in seeing anyone else. If that were the case I'd be using condoms with this guy still.

But I do know that Non-9 can be a potential irritant. I wonder why just the sponge would be singled out then. Diaphragms are supposed to be filled with Non-9 jelly and lots of other products containing Non-9 are on the market, such as spermicidal foams.

I was under the impression that it was SUPREMELY stressed that you use a condom with Non-9 at all times....

I have to take back my rave review of the sponge from back in September. Continued use of the sponge did start giving me yeast infections. After a while it was pretty much a guaranteed yeasty the next day. No more sponges for me!

I'm going back on the pill.

I had a BAD experience with the today sponge. I couldn't get it out. I literally had to dig inside myself, with acrylic nails on, for 30 minutes until I finally located the string to pull it out. In the process I scratched the hell out of my cunt and was in pain all night. Sucks because it is pretty convenient.
