Default Women owned and run club?

Myself and a few partners (all women) are currently in the planning stages of opening an upscale 'women owned and run' club. Our goal is to provide an enviroment where the women employees (dancers and management) are treated with the utmost respect and fairness.
We are looking for input from dancers on their thoughts or suggestions on this concept. What would be the upsides or downsides for the dancers? What would be the most common complaints that you have working for men? Would you prefer to work for women or not?
Any and all comments are welcome! Thanks so much for you input on this!

I don't have any problems working for men because they are men. Women can be just as corrupt as men. They are usually more money-driven than sex-driven, but that can be worse.

Honestly, I don't see the benefit. As long as the girls are treated well and walk out with a decent amount of money, that's what matters to us.

    Just curious....are you former dancers?

I agree, ultimately, it's that I make money that matters. Many men owned and operated clubs treat dancers with respect and fairness, mine included.

    Good Luck!

I agree with Emily, I prefer clubs run by men and I dont see the benifit of working in a club run by women.

I have worked for a male owned, women ran club before. To be honest, in my experience it sucked working for women. Especially when one of the managers was an ex dancer herself, who couldn't seem to live without the attention from the customers. It didn't help that she was also totally unprofessional and would sit and drink champagne with the wealthy customers and guard their money from the dancers, oh and take big tips from them for herself.
There was just so much catiness from the female managers, dj's, bar girls and private room controllers. I sensed from them that they felt sexually inferior, probably from seeing the dancers recieve more attention than them.

    I'd rather work for men.

Drama. Women aren't taught to separate personal and public life like men are.

So there aren't any successful businesswomen?

I have worked at a female owned (she and her husband) and operated club and it was one of the best places I've ever worked. She was the consummate professional and she ran that place like a well-oiled machine. She was meticulous about the care of the club, and it showed. It was the cleanest, most beautiful club I've ever set foot in. Her husband put his money behind it, but it was her business savvy and personal skills that made it a success. I hated to see them sell the place. It went straight to the shitter after a man bought it.

Jagger, I've been saying it for years "the women in this industry should unite and open their own club - this way they are treated fare, and with respect, and with appreciation". Too often, the male owned and operated clubs treat the women llike dirt. I'm not saying "all" clubs operate by men, but most. I wish you all the luck. It's a great idea. However, I must agree, some female managers do have issues being surrounded by younger more beautiful women, who make more money than they do. Jealousy often settles in, and the cat fights begin! A male manager may be a good idea, but make sure the female owners set the rules.

No, I'm not saying that women can't be good businesswomen. She was asking what to avoid when she runs the club, and I told her.

The best boss I ever worked under was a woman, and the worst boss I ever worked under was a woman. The best club I ever worked at was run by a mother (reminded me of Melonie, if she had worked for Enron, they would have never been caught or gone to bust) and son. However, I have had more problems with females in the workplace than men due to cliques, inability to separate work life from feeling personal attack from even the most tactful of constructive criticism, backbiting, and drama in general. Also, women are taught to be nice and inoffensive, that she has to get everyone to like her which makes her a pushover, or that nice girls don't get ahead, so they have to morph into tyrant Nazis to prove themselves. In general, lack of professional attitude and tyranny seem to be the most common flaw I've seen in female bosses. A good boss needs to be above all the drama, which means no gossiping about who's a shitty dancer or who's probably turning tricks or who's ugly.

This is a wonderful essay telling what women need to overcome in order to thrive in the workplace.

Also, when strip clubs are run by women, security tends to be much better.

London's best venue { Browns} is owned and run by a woman { not an ex dancer} who is regarded as firm but fair amongst the dancers. However there are a couple of other places run by female nut cases which are as bad as the worst male run places.

I disagree with some of the posts. I think women owned clubs can be good depending on the women running them. I have worked for one lady who owns a club who is great, a good motivator and really knows how to get the money flowing. I have worked for some women who are catty and unbusinesslike.

Clubs owned by experienced former dancers who have a good business head are a good thing. Especially if they require dancer and staff training such as that offered by Dancer Wealth, and make the dancers adhere to professional standards of appearance and behavior.

Many clubs run by men are just cash and dash operations, run by men who want quick money, and the inside hookup on pussy.

I used to work in a club that was female-owned-and-operated. I liked it quite a lot. The man who took over is running it into the ground. I keep meeting customers elsewhere who used to go there and have stopped, just like many of the dancers I know from that club.

The club that is the most notorious in town for bad, unprofessional management is also owned and operated by a woman.

I would say that in general the way strip club management fails is by making it about them, not about the dancers or the customers. Men do this in male-centered ways; women do this in female-centered ways. A bad male manager sees women as disposable. A bad female manager sees women as competition. Either of these is a problem.

A good manager tries to make their workplace ideal for the people who work there, and in turn encourages those workers to make the club ideal for the customers.

fred's lounge here in missoula is owned and operated by a woman, and when she's not there, one of the all female bartending staff is the de facto manager.

I booked there for one week. That staff there is kind of a pain in the ass, in my opinion.

I agree with this statement 100%! Currently our club is male owned, female managed (ie. leased), and we've already had 1 dancer fired for dating her brother-in-law, 1 dancer quit because of all the drama, and 2-3 more consindering taking a hike because she lacks any sort of managerial skills, is money hungry (using club money for personal use) & brings personal conflicts to the work place [where they do not belong]. This may not be the case with all buisinesswomen, however, I see no more benefit working for a female than a male.

We have both male and female managers at my club. The female one is an ex-dancer who was concerned that she was aging and couldnt dance anymore. But she still tried to get the customers attention and makes it hell on the girls she doesn not like. She has also tried to hit on some of the girls, so that's not just a man problem in this industry. I personally find it easier to work with men in positions of authority but that's just me.

Another difference between men and women is that men just don't get into drama. They duck their heads and think, "Damn petty women," and don't touch the situations with a ten foot pole or just tell them to cut it out or fire them, solutions that involve as little intervention as possible. However, female bosses will try to get in on them to intervene. Petty ones will take sides and smirk in people's faces. Good ones will either just not put up with the shit or mediate firmly but fairly.

My first club was like this too. Female owned and she ran a tight ship. It's not really a male vs. female issue but a good management vs. bad management one. I've watched the male owners of my club (they bought it 5 years ago) run it into the ground. I've had male managers that got way too caught up in the drama and female managers that didn't. We need a little more confidence in our gender here, I danced for 12 years without girly drama.

OP, consistency is the most important thing, solid and clear rules that everyone has to work within. When dancers are happy, customers are happy and there's no need for extra gimmicks. More power to you if you've done your research, good luck!

Our club in DC is woman owned and operated, and she is the sweetest lady ever,we all love her.All our managers are men,but I would agree that often having men for managers is better.Like others said,no drama and cattiness.

I've never worked at a female-owned club, but I've worked for two female managers. One was a consumate professional -- she was all about the money, but not to the exclusion of treating the staff decently. She was tactful and knew how to get along with people, but avoided being friends with ANYONE, so that there were no cliques. The other female manager was OK, too, though younger and not as professional. She stayed out of dancers' ways and let them do their jobs, and was always polite to me. Other girls may have had problems with her, but it always seemed to me that they were the ones who started it.

I don't know if the gender of the owners and managers matters to me, as long as I'm treated like a professional and not a disposable piece of ass.

A lot of the problem is the women put in charge don't have experience running a strip club and many have never danced.

In the small towns I book in I have worked for more than several clubs with women managers. The women are older, ugly, some are former waitresses of the club, and have never been in a big city strip club, let alone danced in a big city. They don't understand the business.

The right kind of women who have a business head on their shoulders and dancing experience and hustling sucess in all formats of clubs big and small makes a big difference. If these women are managers their boss needs to get on them and tell them not to be catty.

Women like Bridgette or Melonie (or me LOL) could own and run a club and not act catty with the dancers. When you own or run a club as a woman you, are not their to vy for male attention. You are there to keep the girls in line, enforce standards, and manage the operations and the money.

The Lodge in Dallas is owned by a couple. The woman has a lot of experience. You may want to contact her for advice. Also Shotgun Willie's is owned by a woman and is known for treating her dancers differently. At the end of the day, treat everyone with respect and get rid of the bad apples fast.
