    Default Another acne thread?

I've had acne since I was 12. I'll be 26 in Nov. NOTHING cleared up my skin!! I tried everything but accutane (I was scared and dang that stuff is expensive!).
I finally came across acne.org last August. The don't have a "cure". It's a forum just like this, but I was able to grab different methods from different people to make my own skin regime. I started mine at the end of August (last year) and was clear by the end of the week. I can't say I had severe acne, but I always had over 10 flareups every day. Mostly just regular pimples with a few cysts. And after 12+ yrs of acne....I have icepick scars all over. Anyway.....if anyone would like to try my regime, please let me know. I've been 99% clear for just over a year. And I buy all my products at Walmart except one that I get at Walgreens. This pic was one month after starting. All of my red marks were seriously faded in that short time period.

PLEASE do share!!!! I have struggled with acne all my life, been to the dermatologist, and nothing has worked (I am not up for accutane). I'm always up for new ideas.

I'd like to hear what you do. I don't get bad breakouts now, but it's always right around my chin (but I think I touch my face too much...maybe...).

I joined acne.org in August of last year. I'll be 26 in Nov. and have had mild/moderate acne since I was 12. NOTHING worked for me. I've tried everything (pro-active, differin, retin-a, microderm, every drug store product) except Accutane which I'm scared of and quite frankly, that shit is expensive! I've probably dropped a small fortune on acne products over the years.
I started out trying Dan's suggestions of 2.5% BP with a mild cleanser. That didn't work for me or I didn't have patience. I went straight to the hard, peel off your face products like 10% BP wash and 10% BP gel. I cleared up immediately but looked like a sunburned monster...and wrinkles!!!
I started browsing the forums trying to find products that worked repeatedly for the people here. Only one stuck out....HIBICLENS. This stuff is awesome, but I have to pair it with SA and BP to stay clear.
So...here's my regimen if you want to try it:

    1. Soft Facial Brush (Walmart makeup/loofah dept.) <$3
    2. Clean & Clear 10% Benzoyl Peroxide wash (cream)<$5
    3. Fingernail brush (loofah dept.)<$3
    4. Hibiclens Chlorexhidine Wash (First Aid sect. of
    Walgreens, Rite-Aid, etc.)$10
    5. Cotton balls or pads <$2
    6. Clean & Clear 2% Salicylic Acid Toner (orange)<$5
    7. Clean & Clear Persagel 10% Benzoyl Peroxide cream$5
    8. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. (it's
    small)<$5

Apply C&C BP wash to face with facial brush in
    circular motion until foamy.

    Rinse

LIGHTLY rub face with nail brush from top to bottom to
remove dead skin and reduce peeling (not recommended
but it sure as hell worked for me)

Dry face and apply Hibiclens to very damp facial
brush. Apply enough so that it foams a little when
using a circular motion. I leave it on a few minutes.
I usually floss, brush, etc. to stave off boredom.

    Rinse

Apply C&C SA toner to cotton ball and apply all over
face (as much as you want) except eyes. This will fade
    redmarks and reduce blackheads.

Apply C&C Persagel while face is still wet or dry.
Apply as much as your comfortable with, but DO NOT get
    on eyelids or under eyes.

Apply a LOT of Neutrogena Hand Cream to eyelids and
under eyes. Also pat it on entire face.

If you don't, you will have wrinkles and alligator
skin. Very uncomfortable and not attractive. You'd think this would
clog your pores, but I didn't get one new zit and my ugly
BP wrinkles went away in two days. I used to just gob this
cream on and under my eyes for fear of lotion clogging
the pores. And other lotions just absorbed too fast anyway. This stuff
is thick and I friggin love it! I'm also less oily...go figure!

Your skin will stay clear as long as you do this twice a day.
Assuming this works for you, that is.
Your chance of breakouts is higher if you skip days. I
know! I've also tried variations of my regimen. I find that the BP wash
and Hibiclens go very well together. Using just one or the
other always led to more breakouts than usual.

I may get one or two small pimples a month, but I'm
also a female with crazy hormones.

I really hope it works for you. I was at the end of my rope when I started it. In less than a week I noticed a HUGE difference. I didn't put that Neutrogena cream on my face (just eyes) for almost a year though. I've been using it for two weeks with no clogged pores, but I can't say what it will do to yours. It is alot less oily when I pile that cream on my face, then when I go without.
Also.... I quit wearing foundation. Foundation always stuck around the pimples and dry skin spots anyway, looked caky, and ran off my face. I just paintbrush sticky concealer on my red marks and scars and use a mineral powder by Prescription Formula. I also blot with kleenex tissues often.

Yup, I have the same problem with foundation. I eventually just swore it off and now I stick to concealer and loose powder. It's nice not having to worry about the Line of Doom anymore, not to mention all the patchiness.

Anyway, I went to the store and was able to find all the stuff-- though I saw Neutrogena Norwegian Hand Cream, not Swiss. Is that what you meant?

I'll probably get started tonight. At this point I feel like the overweight woman watching infomercials at 2AM, pulling her credit card out to buy the latest weight loss drink. I've tried so much! But hey, hope springs eternal, eh?

If you google it, they actually use it to repair wrinkles in many cases.

They CAN use salicylic acid to treat wrinkles, however it is very irritating to most skin types. Irriation can cause acne and funny enough, irritation can cause wrinkles...There are better acidic peels to treat wrinkles such as mandelic acid, lactic acid, and tca peels. Even glycolic acid is considered sub par to the better treatments out there.

Like I said before, tea tree oil has been found in Australian studies to be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide without the side effects. You just have to use it with a carrier oil such as jojoba. Now, Jojoba oil acts as a better moisturizer because the molecules in jojoba oil are small enough to allow moisture penetration in the skin. Where as a moisturizer such as St. Ives is probably a mineral oil base, whose molecules are too large and blocking the process that the moisturizer needs to do. Also, in place of Salicylic Acid, I would suggest a natural apple cider vinegar toner. They go into great depth about that on the acne.org site. It also helps with red marks and it quite inexpensive.

Now when you are thinking about tea tree oil, you are probably thinking your skin is oily enough. However, tea tree oil is an essential oil and has a different chemical compostion that most oils commonly thought of. It is not a true oil, but an organic alcohol.

Essential oils are volitale plant hormones. As our hormones control the functioning of the human anatomy, the phytohormones of the plant control the functioning of the plant. Due to this similarity between plants and people, our bodies are able recognize and assimilate essential oils for therapeutic use.

But I will go back to what I said in the first place, all the outer skin care in the world is not going to help you if you don't address the problems within. Your skin is giving you a sign that your body is not functioning properly internally. Women with hormonal problems are known to age prematurely, therefore it is in your best interest to pay attention to your body and your health. Health is beauty. Health is wealth. As a dancer, you are nothing without your health. Get that phone book out and call that Endocrinologist.

mblank, have your visits to the endocrinologist been covered by insurance? it'd be something i'm willing to consider, especially if it's covered (i have kick ass insurance, so maybe).

What insurance do you have? Is it BCBS? That's what I had. They only covered part of my expenses. But it was well worth it to pay my part. My skin is clear now and I have learned some new things about my body which have made me adopt a healthier lifestyle. You also may be able to get a tax deduction out it, as it is a health expense and also pertains to your appearance as an entertainer. Your insurance may require a referral from an MD. Basically, you need to get your hormones tested. Explain to your doctor that you have acne and concerns about your hormones. Tell them you'd like to get your hormones tested and was considering an endocrinologist. My sister got lucky and actually just got her MD to test her hormones for her. So did my mom. So maybe you should bring it up to your MD and see if they want to run the tests or if they would rather send you off with a referral.

Yup, I have BCBS. I have a doctor's appointment in a month; I think I'll bring this up then. My skin has been wacked since childhood and I'm sick of it.

Thanks for the advice, i would have never thought of that.

Definitely, when you go to the doc, just bring up the hormone test issue and the endocrinologist idea. And be persistant. Don't let them offer you another load of crap like a round of anti-biotics, retina, or whatever topicals they want to do. Doctors like to treat symptoms. Insist that you have reason to suspect that your hormones are out of wack and you want a test. If they are out of wack, you will probably get prescribed something like spironolactane or Yasmin. These things will make you sick for a while, as anything will when you are dealing with balancing hormones. But hang in there. It will be worth it. It will also save you from other health problems in the future.

An endocrinologist sounds like a great idea because I AM learning to despise dermatologists. I went to my first one in three years to discuss treating my scars. They are shallow but over my entire face. She didn't even look at me up close. Told me the BP, Hibiclens, SA is fine if it's working. She prescribed antibiotics and retin a micro at night to "eliminate" the few breakouts I do get now.
I don't think my hormones are out of whack necessarily but who knows. If I don't see a huge difference after adding those two things to the mix....I may just try that.
I'm happy with what I'm using now though. I don't feel the need to wear makeup anymore, and I want to give anyone the option of having as much luck. I'm not a doctor and all that product can't be good, but it worked quickly and continues to work for me.
