    Default Tips for Safe Traveling?

so i'm driving across the country on my own in a few weeks and i'm wondering if you guys have any tips, experiences, advice to share about safe traveling. you know, avoiding scary people, staying awake, not being abducted at a gas station and chopped into a million tiny pieces (ok, so maybe i'm being a little melodramatic).

i'm getting my car checked out before i leave. have triple a, etc...but the on my own part worries me just a little bit...

    thanks guys!!!

A person driving alone is probably at most risk falling asleep at the wheel. So, take frequent rest stops! If you map out your trip--cities you'll be riding through--I'm sure a bunch of us SW types along your route would buy you a cup of coffee.

    Three words. Books. On. Tape.
"See, believe it or not (and I don't care whether you do), it's never been about the sex. I get sex at home, anytime, and we like it, and it's good for both of us. No, my stripclub experience has been about acceptance, and affirmation, and desirability...There have been some women who have a personality that just clicks with mine, and in the faux-sex atmosphere of the club, it's a mix that is completely seductive." - Jay Zeno

Get a membership to AAA or another auto club. Should something happen to your car you may need a tow or a roadside repair that could be invaluable when you're in the middle of Nowhere USA.

    - If you have a cell phone, keep it charged. If not, get one. A prepaid one like a Simple Freedom phone is better than nothing. The last thing you need is your battery going dead when you need to call 911. Keep a prepaid phone card as a backup. There still are some pay phones out there.
    - Keep a road atlas. If you're going to spend a day or two in a particular city, invest $5 in a local street map. If you have a GPS navigation device, even better.
    - Anywhere you stop for the night, scout where a 24 hour business (like a convienence store) is. If you end up getting followed while driving, go there. Do NOT go back to your hotel.
    - When traveling between cities, try to use freeways (namely the Interstates) as much as possible. Its harder to get lost. Try to stay in lodging close to these routes.
    - Know how far your vehicle can get on a tank of gas. Plan where your next gas stop will be before you leave a particular place.
    - If you have an item that is tempting to steal (cash, jewelry, laptop computer) conceal it, both in your vehicle and in your hotel room.
    - Don't overexert yourself driving. Caffine will only get you so far.
    - NEVER tell anybody you are alone.
    - Avoid highway rest areas. Any place that is relatively unattended and has horny truckers and people walking their dogs milling about can't be good.
    - Watch the movie "Joy Ride" before you take off. Yeah, its preposterous, but it will help instill some fear in you of what can happen on the road.
    - If it doesn't look safe (and "it" could be a lot of things), assume that it isn't.

24 hour truck stops are a great idea in my opinion. Don't go into the game rooms, sit in nonsmoking at the restruant, and park as close to the front door as possible. These go for not only truckstops but also for any place.

    I drive multi-state frequently.

If you want to nap at a rest stop, have an inflatable doll in the passenger seat dressed like a man and covered with a blanket.

    Lock your doors.

Books on tape -- especially if it's interactive like self-improvement or language. It keeps you awake.

If you find yourself getting "highway hypnosis," call a friend and talk for a hour or so. It too keeps you awake.

    Cell phone headset.

    Back pillow.

Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and baby wipes. For real, public restrooms are disgusting and under-equipped.

Pack food because you don't know when the next Taco Bell is coming up. Also, Taco Bell gets expensive.

    Stretch. Walk.

Do not let your tank go below 1/4 full. You don't know when the next gas station is coming up and you really don't want to run out of gas.

Bring a good compass. This has saved my butt thousands of times.

Motel 6 is the best out of them all. Knights Inn is the worst. Do not stay in a motel in a shady looking area.

Know how to change your own tire. Seriously, practice before you go. AAA takes an hour to get out to you while it only takes 10 minutes to fix the problem yourself.

    NRA bumper sticker. LOL.

I saw this happen on a forensic show where there was a car following this woman. Her tire blew out and "luckily" he was there to take her to a phone to call for help. He ended up taking her to a secluded place and killing her. He did this to a few women.

So with that said dont take help from a stranger/man even when you just need a ride to a phone. Keep your phone charged the whole time in case you need it. Dont give anyone directions, change or have them or your approach eachother even if youre in your car. Not that all people are scary but this is how most killers get their victims close. They ask where such and such is while approaching your or their car and bam they have you close enough to have a knife to your neck.

Will you be stopping anywhere along the way? If so, do you have those places reserved or planned out?

Go to Rdio Shack and buy your self a cheap CB radio. This way if you get stranded out in the middle of nowhere, with no cell service, you can still contact someone for help.

And ALWAYS ,ALWAYS remember if a "plain clothes" cop happens to stop and help... you have the right to stay in your car and ask to see his credentials. If you still feel unsafe, you can then ask him to radio for a marked unit and uniformed officer. If he is a real cop, he will gladly do this.

    Okay. Now I'm being a smart-ass;
Pick up a hichhicker, and don't say ANYTHING for about the first 5 or 10 miles. Don't even look in his direction. Then after about 10 miles of uncomfortable silence, and while your gaze is fixed on the road ahead, just say: "So. How far do you think you're going? Do me a favor and put on your seat-belt. I wanna try something that I saw on TV. I saw it in a cartoon, but I'm pretty sure that I can pull it off."
...It's fun to watch them roll at 75 mph!

Do not, I repeat DO NOT, stop at rest stops, especially at night. And especially in the South. Keep going until you find a gas station or a fast food restaurant. Lots of women disappear from rest stops.

i will defintely stop along the way. i don't trust myself to make a 48 hour drive without falling asleep and killing myself. i will have my stops planned and hotels staked out before i go.

i also have a 90 pound dog who is extremely protective of me and her territory. that makes me feel a bit safer.

is pepper spray a good idea? or is it one of those things that could easily be used against me?
