    Default Scottsdale Arizona Victory?

Scottsdale voters appear to side with strip clubs
    By Brian Powell, Tribune
    September 12, 2006
Scottsdale voters apparently handed the city's two strip clubs a victory Tuesday by overturning a City Council decision to further regulate the businesses. Proposition 401 was losing by more than 1,300 votes, with an unknown number of early and provisional ballots left to be counted, according to preliminary results released Tuesday night.

Final results are expected to be released Friday.

The apparent defeat of Proposition 401 — a "no" vote was one against the tougher regulations — means the current rules will remain in effect for Babe's Cabaret, which is partially owned by adult film mogul Jenna Jameson, and Skin Cabaret, owned by local businessman Todd Borowsky.

Club owners said the new regulations, which would have required a distance requirement for topless dancers and banned lap dances, would have driven them out of business.

The clubs gathered enough signatures to force a referendum on the changes the council approved in December, shortly after Jameson announced she was part owner of Babe's.

Haha...I bet there is some truth to what the mayor et al is saying. It reminds me of a scene in the Life Aquatic. I can see it: "Well, of course I am against strip clubs! I vote no!! Wait a minute...what was no, again?"

If voters are that stupid they shouldn't have a say in the matter anyway.

Well, I wish the clubs luck. This will be a pretty awesome victory if they pull it off. And if they don't, I think it could mean bad news for us all.

I hope the final vote is in favor of the clubs. That bitch of a mayor needs to rot in hell.

See what can happen when the fight is not hush hush and gets vocal and in the publics faces. Too many strip club fights are kept hush hush and only fought in the courtroom. The public needs to see that strip clubs are regular businesses that cater to middle and upper class patrons and are not a risk to society.

^^^ it's amazing what can happen when one of the clubowners in question happens to be the #1 best known best paid porn star in the business ... who could easily afford to pony up $100,000 in 'pocket money' to invest in a publicity / lobbying effort to fight new regulations which would affect her comparatively minor club business investment (meaning she has tens of millions invested elsewhere). Frankly, I don't know of very many clubowners who are in similar financial situation, or who would have such a well known personality available to serve as their 'figurehead'.

yes this was a 'victory' ... but I wouldn't count on similar victories happening elsewhere because the situation in Scottsdale was extremely unusual.

^^ still it should be a wake up call to some in the industry that there are other options than to just fold up the tent and close up shop when some unreasonable ordinance is shoved down their throats. Most rationale people don't care for this type of government intrusion into their lives and when given the chance to voice their concerns will do the right thing (even if they don't care for strip clubs themselves).

I'd be willing to bet that the victory is more about people wanting the government to work on important things like roads, schools, reducing crime etc. NOT to waste it's time and the taxpayers money on petty crap like this law.

If the ballot measure had been about something equally as stupid, oh say like, declaring a type of protoza as an endagered species and we needed to hire an army of sciencietists to prove it, I'd vote that down too .

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

^^^It really was a crushing victory for the clubs, it looks like the new rules are even more lenient than they had been in the past, I'm guessing that's not what the city was going for. I wish more citizens/clubs would push back when cities try to pass this kind of shady legislation.

again, don't get your hopes up to high that a 'victory' in Scottsdale AZ will be any more meaningful to the country as a whole than previous 'victories' in San Francisco CA.

In both cases, the local demographic is very atypical compared to the state as a whole or country as a whole.

... yes I'll come out and say it that they both are primarily comprised of relatively rich white liberals ! In addition, both involved 'adult industry celebrities' and liberal local media in the strip club controversy.

Thus while a 'victory' for strip clubs was politically possible in these cities due to adequate financing, supportive local media, and a pool of local voters with liberal leanings in regard to the 'sex industry', there is absolutely nothing to indicate that a similar outcome can be achieved in other cities with more typical pools of local voters or more typical local media.
