    Guys- Did He Peek?

A couple days ago I took my computer to be fixed by a young guy in town. (My poor Dell Desktop never recovered from the bashing FedEx gave it.) I picked it up the next day & noticed the guy was a bit smirky with me. I was tired from work & just wanted to pay my bill & go home so I didn't think twice.
When I hooked my computer up, I found he had removed my Henry Rollins-Half-Naked Screensaver, so we had a big laugh about homophobia- this kid couldn't handle working on a machine with a naked guy on the screensaver. Does this mean he took a tour of my computer contents too? Come on computer geeks, fess up. Do you peek in people's computers? Next time, should I pay a Geek Squad member to come to my house so I can look over his shoulder while he works?

Personally, I don't. I know I wouldn't like someone poking around my computer, so I treat others' computers the same way.

Do I think this guy did? If he bothered to change the screensaver (yeesh, come on, it's only a freaking screensaver ... ) ... I wouldn't be surprised if he looked around, but then again, maybe not.

If ever someone was to work on my computer, I'd always like to watch them, and indeed I've done so (when I had the cable guys 'fixing' my cable modem, for instance). But then, I'm that way about a lot of things... hell, I like watching over my car when I take it to the full-service car wash joint... maybe I'm just anal

Ugh. This is exactly the reason why I just bought a new computer. I couldn't handle the thought of someone snooping through my computer while they were fixing it.

    PGP Disk is your friend.

After a picture of a naked guy popped up - I bet he wasn't to crazy about searching for more stuff anymore!

Yes he did peek. No I don't peek. No interest. I have too little time on my hands to waste doing that. Sounds like you should have called me. Would I let someone else work on my computer.... only with me over thier shoulder.

This is the main disagreement I have with people in corp IT, they are always reading everyone elses mail... WTF????!!!! Back then I could get 500 emails a day (system alerts, notifications etc.), do you think I want to read someone elses? god dammed.... I'd appreicate one thankyou.

I did rebuild a system for a freind once, and stuck what I thought was a Ranma scanlation on the system.... turns out is was a scanlation of a dōjinshi, the first few pages are the original story... then it gets really preverse with Nabiki blackmailing Ranma... Now here is the punchline it was for his sister... still we all laughed about it.

I'd ask him how many times he got off on the pics. lol

Hence the reason I always nuke my porn before moving overseas or going on a plane. You never know.

Also a lot of times the screensaver/background get in my way especially on a slow system, so I might turn them off. I always try to restore them though.

First, Geek Squad are a bunch of skillless hacks. Avoid at all costs.

Second, sometimes in the course of repairing a system you come across files that you weren't looking for intentionally. It just happens that way sometimes. Earlier this year, I had an employee at one of my business clients ask me to fix a pair of her systems. One of them needed a new hard drive (her son's laptop), but the other system (her husband's laptop) needed to be purged of a series of viruses that were attached to video files. In this case, the video files were all porn. Not like I care, as I've seen way more than my share of porn on customer systems, so it was no big deal to me; I don't care so long as it's not child porn, in which case, I'm visiting my local FBI office in the next town over.

The problem was that, a) the woman who gave me the systems had no idea about her husband's hobby (no, I didn't tell her), b) I had to delete over 4,000 video files that were infected with viruses--mostly by hand, c) the filenames were all stuff like, "Tranny Takes It In Every Hole," "Dirty Girl Loves Big Shits," and all manner of other low-grade material.

Bottom line: if you don't want someone else to see your drive contents, take it to a trusted source.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

CO, you are right it does happen sometimes, and trusted sources of repair, are the way to go.

A few years ago I picked up my laptop from the repair place and the guy was seriously eyeing me. He was looking me up and down and totally closing in on my personal space. I got back home to discover I had left a porn IN THE DVD PLAYER. It was so ridiculous. It was like I'd left it in there to be discovered or something and he must have thought I was just all freaky and like hitting on them or something.

I didn't really care that much. And it was a pretty harmless soft-core thing my boyfriend had given me as sort of a joke. Oh well. I'm sure he had fun with the whole thing.

I'd have to agree he probably did. I've seen plenty of interesting things cleaning up viruses and stuff but hell if anyone went through my computer they would find a stash to. Just with time its gone from the shoe box in the closet to a hard drive, oh well. I don't go through drawers/cabinets in bathrooms of people I visit either though and I know alot of people who do. If it's not mine then I have no reason to look but I don't put much faith in random computer repair guy #5.

Yeah, this is why I also just went out and bought a new computer. Being that I am generally strapped for cash, my dad usually fixes my computer. After it really crashed and lost the whole operating system, I just bought a new computer. Yay credit cards. I didn't even want to know what my dad would have found. I'm not huge on internet/computer porn, but I've poked around a lot of websites, and I've had several roommates use my computer over the years...so who knows what would have come up.

I think my dad would even flip out anout this webiste. He's a close-minded catholic. I used to get all my magazine subscriptions to my parents house: Cosmo, Marie Claire, fitness, Stuff and Maxim. He made me change my address on Cosmo, Stuff and Maxim, b/c he does not want "smut mags" in his house. So needless to say, a new computer was the right choice for me!

In the early days of the internet, I was the administrator at one of the first ISP's in town, in the course of troubleshooting some email problem that one of our major clients was having, a well known local businessman, I saw his emails about his inflatable clothing fetish ... as they say... too much information... since then I have just tried not to see that kind of thing when it is in front of me....

Of course he took a tour. Should you pay someone next time? Depends on which is more important to you.
