    Angry Im addicted to eating!!

OMG!! I have no control!! I tell myself im going to stop pigging out and just eat three very healthy meals a day and maybe a snack or two on fruit. But noooooooooo I end up pigging out till im overstuffed, bloated and feel like shit. To top it off EVERYTHING I eat or drink is upsetting my stomache latley to the point I have unmanageable cramps and I feel gasy and just very unsexy I swear I have no will power though. I think I have figured out dairy upsets my stomache more then anything so im trying to avoid dairy products which sucks because im addicted to milk and cheese(better then chips and soda I say lol). Seriously though I dont know whats wrong.. I can not stop myself from eating. The worse of it is I crave junk type food and I cant summon the will power to avoid it. I have stopped buying junk food when i grocery shop but when I go to the store to get smokes I cant stop myself from stopping to grab chips. Bah I think the junk is whats making my stomache feel gross as well so I really need to gather the will power to stop myself from eating it. I need to reset my diet and make myself stop eating 24/7. Before I know it I will find myself being a 500 pound stripper going by the name of Big Bertha.

When you start featuring as Big Bertha, can I join you? I've got the same problem. I'll buy all healthy foods, and I have awesome control at the grocery store, but man, during the day I'd LOVE to stop somewhere and get a burrito.
    Bah.
It doesn't help that now that I've cracked down on going to the gym (like 5 days a week) and been watching what I'm eating I've actually GAINED weight. Yuck.

When I've been on a hungry binge I try to snap it back by fasting for a bit. It's easiest for me not to eat in the morning/afternoon. If I can hold back on that, drink coffee or something, and then eat a small meal at dinner I can get my stomach regulated again.

Your best bet is to plan ahead. Before you go to bed tonight, make up a menu of what you are going to cook tomorrow. Confirm that you have all the ingerdients, and buy whatever you need to complete the meals. Include some semi healthy "binge items in your menu, like baked chips and low fat dip or a veggie plate or sugar free popcicles etc.

I don't know about you, but my big problem is convienance. If I have to spend more than 15 minutes preparing food when I'm starving, it aint gonna happen. I'll grab whatever is fastest, and that is usually junk food.

I've also found that hoodia is a great appetite supressant. I use it only occasionally, but it does work like a charm. Be sure to concentrate on getting enough water, because it supresses thirst as well. Another supplement I take is ALA or Alpha Lipoic Acid. It is expensive, but it knocks your appetite down, even more so if you've been eating junk. It is a powerful antioxidant, and is not meant to be an appetite supressant, that is just a side benefit . Since you are a smoker your body could really benefit from ALA to counteract the toxins in the tabacco.

Your stomach pains sound like irritable bowel syndrome. It sucks, I've got it. There is no cure, there is no long term treatment, and really the only way you can control it is by getting your eating under control. I also find relief by vigrious exercise for about 20-45 minutes everyday. It is basically a problem with the muscles in your large intestine not working together to push food through your system. The food gets trapped, causes gas, which causes pain. Eating healthy will reduce your gassiness and exercise gets gravity to do what your muscles in your intestines can't. It seems to be caused by junk food diets in our youth. But science has not proven this theory, but it would make sense.

I used to have a HUGE problem with this. I used to have a major bingeing (and unfortunately, purging) relationship with food that dated waaaaaay back to when I was a kid, and sometimes it still comes up everynow and then, but towards the middle of last year it became a huge, life interfering problem. Not only mentally, but physically too - stabbing pains when I didn't eat, awful pains when I did eat, and I just felt sluggish and gross all the time. The way I fixed it, was to organise times when I would eat. I did it over the holidays when I was home all the time, and I would have 4 meals a day. Breakfast would be at 7, another meal at 11, another meal at 2, and another at 5-6. And I would plan exactly what that meal was, I didn't really care if the meal was fantastically super healthy at this point, at the start it was just to regulate eating times, but the deal was, I was only allowed to eat what I wanted to prepare, no more, and if I wanted more I would HAVE to wait until the next eating time. And then as I became used to only eating at these times, I made the food as healthy as possible, and soon I found I only ever became hungry at those times.

And now in total I've lost 8kg...

OMG, LOL Cally, I could have sworn you were talking about me in your situation; right down to the dairy addiction and inability to have it. No advice.... but good luck. I'll be watching this topic.

I used to have a binging/purging problem also. I got rid of the purging completely, but the binging would come and go, haunting me. I actually went to therapy for it..the therapist recommending a book called "overcoming binge eating" what's essentially happening is, you're not eating enough and/or you are being too strict and too hard on yourself about eating any kind of treats. You have to allow yourself these things without feeling immensely guilty, so you can have some without then eating everything in sight. Best wishes to you, this was a very difficult thing for me..and none of my friends and family could understand when I tried to tell them to keep those foods out of the house because I will eat it all in one shot and get sick. Good luck!

It does sound a little like IBS, especially since dairy is for many a huge IBS trigger.

I go on savage eating binges sometimes. The more junk you eat, the harder it is to stop. It's true that sugar and fat throw the cycle somehow to make you only want more and more.

Aristotle called it the problem of 'akrasia' or weak will. We rationally know that whatever behaviour is bad for us, and in the case of junk food when I'm trying to lose a few, is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I should be doing- of what I really want to do! So I don't want to eat crap, but I do anyway. I knows it's bad, but my willpower just isn't there sometimes. The only solution I've found, well...

This...will sound a little crazy. And it's hard. But it works: hypnosis or self-hypnosis.

You can google self-hypnosis techniques, and it's a little tricky at first. Keep practicing. Aim for three sessions a day. Basically what I do is find a quiet spot to lie down. When you're new, quiet is very important. Distraction free! Then, starting at your toes, contract and relax every muscle in your body, moving upward. This is so your body becomes completely relax.

And then you go down. Close your eyes and imagine stepping into an elevator. Count down the floors, from 50 to 0 or whatever. FEEL the sensation of going deeper and lower...say in your mind as you count down "going down...lower, deeper". You can even get out of the elevator and then climb down some low-spiralling cave or something. I dunno, that's my induction fantasy. Use whatever works for you, but make sure you count yourself down in a way that allows you to envision yourself going literally 'lower' and 'deeper'.

When you get to the bottom (when you reach the number 0 or whatever), repeat a mantra that is specific and simple. Speak not in desire but in present action. For example, say "everyday I am getting slimmer and healthier. I am excercising more and eating less. I love to eat healthy and hate to eat what's bad for me." Repeat. Over and over. After about five or ten minutes, bring yourself back up. Don't just open your eyes. Count up from three. Say "3 (coming up), 2 (higher, almost there), 1 (open your eyes)".

Don't allow yourself to go to sleep after the induction. Always bring yourself 'back up'. It sounds strange, but damn if it doesn't work. It's the kind of thing that works before you even realize it's working. I'll do it and then the next day just realize "holy shit I didn't eat or snack on a single piece of crap yesterday". It really spooks and surprises me. I do get better results from having someone else hypnotize me (and hypnosis can be used for ALL kinds of problems), but my hypno guy tells me self-hypnosis can be just as effective (for simpler problems like food addiction) so long as you practice it for a while. And doing it yourself is free of course.

    Good luck!

Doesn't sound crazy to me. I use these exact techniques for tons of things -- any time I want to make a change but somehow the will-power isn't there.

The way we eat is largely a matter of habit, and changing habits is tricky...I read an article once that said it takes 21 days of doing the same thing to break an old habit or set a new one. Does that make it seem easier? Pick a date that you're going to start a new way of eating, and write it on the calendar. Like Paris says, plan your meals ahead so you know exactly what you're having and make sure you have the ingredients so you can't play the convenience card and run out for a burrito. Remember that it's also easier to build habits if they are part of a routine, so try eating around the same time every day. Also try Molly's self-programming/self-hypnosis trick a few times a day. It may sound like a lot, but remember that in about three weeks you'll have a bunch of new habits, and it won't be hard to keep eating well.

(Beware, though, that the 21-day rule also applies to breaking good habits. I've gone on vacation for a few weeks, or just gotten lazy and occupied with other things, and all of a sudden found myself reverting to all kinds of bad behavior.)

I find it hard to eat healthy and not eat to much also. It almost feels like being an alcholic or something. And really some really healthy foods just the though of them grosses me out.

As far as dairy, I found out a while ago that it bothers me. But I drink either lactaid milk or soy milk which taste great to me.

Lately though I've been eating healthier, more fiber and veggies, and damn, I keep feeling like I have gas. It's so gross. I never had this problem before. Also, I'm not pooping normally anymore. sorry TMI, but eating healthier seems to be wreaking havoc on my tummy.

Aaarggh this thread is making me want to stuff my face.

But seriously, the advice that's been given is great. I would suggest maybe doing a weekend fast of some sort to break some habits and then finding the things to totally eliminate for good. And then maybe a really good workout schedule. I notice when I work out regularly I tend to eat better.

Sorry to hear it Cally. I've been through similar times. It took a while, but I changed my lifestyle bit by bit. Try different things. When you feel like eating a bunch, start into it, then put away half of what you originally put on your plate or made.

Cardio is a great appetite suppressant. Start off slowly when you feel you can do it. Then after a while, start to do cardio a little when you aren't sure you can do it. You will get momentum after a few weeks.

After 2 weeks of daily cardio, your body will start to crave cardio and you'll find you crave different types of food - food with the healthy nutrients your body needs.

Convienence is very important to me. Every time I look at my refrigerator, I make sure I have 2-3 healthy things I can quickly eat if I'm ever hungry and depserately need food. Suggested snacks to count on:

    Yogurt
    Carrots
Rice is nice (and easy to flavor for your cravings)
    Fresh fruit

And then there's always the half portion from the previous meal you planned which you stored away just in case you really need it. What's the worst that can happen? You end up having to throw away a bunch of half eaten meals you shouldn't have eaten anyway? Better than having to buy more clothes.

    Best of luck.

Sorry but I think a fast would make this ten times worse. Restriction is what led you to this in the first place.

Everytime I see the thread title, I think "you're supposed to be. That's how you live!"

But if you're eating junk, that's no good. Let yourself eat extra if you're eating something good. Like, if you're hungry, say "OK, it's either 1 bounty bar, or a whole bowl of hummus with flax chips". Quantity rules!

And of course make sure you have all the good stuff on hand. Because when you get a midnight craving, 7-11 isn't going to make it easy on you! But if you have some tasy good stuff in your fridge...you've at least got a fighting chance.

And start small. Replace potato chips with unsalted tortilla chips and salsa- not with bean curd or something equally scary. Baby steps!

Why do you have to stay in a dancer house? There are hotels in Edmonton.

Come to think, I never saw you eat that whole week in TBay!

I cant afford the extra to stay in a hotel, plus I STILL dont have a credit card to book a hotel. Im working at Showgirls(or hopefully I am anyway). Maybe I can find a super cheap hotel close to the club. Im trying to save money though to invest into costumes for MNC.

And yea Scarlett... like I said I hate eating in front of people... I get weirded out and all self concious. Its really stupid but it goes back to something from my childhood. I still have a hard time eating in front of my man from time to time and im more comfortable with him then anyone else in the world.

Ah, I see. Well, you'll have your own room (I hope!), so you can always bring your food back there to eat.

You can eat out on your own on your breaks...healthy stuff, of course

I have this problem a lot too and I'm always trying to figure out ways to regulate my eating and to eat better/healthier foods. One thing I know is that it's actually best to eat several small meals throughout the day (like five!) rather than stuff yourself with two or three big meals. Also, if you're really craving something, even something that's "bad" for you, let yourself have a small amount of it. Otherwise you'll just keep thinking about it and craving it (and if you're anything like me, obsessing about it and then finally giving in and binging).

I find it helpful to make food that I can save and eat over several days. For example, yesterday I cooked some black beans and brown rice, crumbled and sauteed some tofu with red and green peppers, garlic, onion, and spices, and I made some fresh guacamole. Now all I have to do it reheat it and put it in a tortilla and I have a good, healthy burrito with lots of protein. It fills me up and gives me energy. I'm actually a big fan of burritos because you can pretty much put any veggies in a tortilla with some beans and salsa and guacamole and it tastes pretty good.

Stress can cause you to overeat. You may be taxing your adrenals. I posted this in another thread, I will post it again-

    http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/ar...fficiency.html

Also, foods that are high on the Glycemic Index/Load can cause your blood sugar levels to go crazy and you will want to eat. Try to stay low on the glycemic index to level your blood sugar.

    Hope this helps.

    Just bumping up this thread.

I've been sitting on my ass in front of the computer monitor all day doing nothing besides stuffing my mouth with food and walking back and forth from the fridge to my desk.

How can I get myself to stop?

    It's uncontrollable!!!

I had 2 tbsps of ELOO and only started to eat outside the time window but still, I can't keep binging. What's wrong with me?!
