    Default Acne

Okay, I do not, as a rule, have skin problems, so keep in mind that to me acne feels like a divine punishment for something. No, I don't know what. Anyway - I got this huge deep-under-the-surface pimple on my chin that hurt pretty bad. I made the poor decision to stick a needle into it so I could pop it. Not sure if I need to say it was an unsuccessful venture. It now a) hurts more (not least because of the squeezy pressure, I assume) and b) looks like I'm growing a tusk. What does one normally do after unsuccessfully mucking about with one's face? Is there anything except sitting around waiting for God to forgive me?

Lol, I can relate. I don't normally have skin problems, but working in the club gets to me every once in a while and I have a breakout. I am currently recovering from one.

For something like that I'd just try to keep it clean and leave it alone as much as possible. Use a strong astringent after you cleanse. A week from now you won't even remember it!

Cortisone cream (like Cortaid) or a cortisone shot by a dermatologist. You can dab it with witch hazel & let it be, it'll re-form into a whitehead & then you can squeeze it out.

Yeah, cystic pimples have to "crest" on their own. Be grateful they're a rare occurence.

NO you don't have to wait for God to forgive you. Like madmaxine said, cortisone cream or shots. You can also go to a day spa, or place that does facials and ask them to zap it. There is a machine that esthecians have that zaps the bacteria under the skin surface and reduces inflammation/swelling. You don't necessarily need to pay for a whole facial for this. If you ask just for the zap, you may be able to get away with paying just $20. Also, applying heat will speed up the healing process. Try steaming your face. And applying a little benzoyl peroxide couldn't hurt.

Does it move easily? What you have is a sebaceous cyst from what I can tell. Sticking a needle into it early on is bad. Though it will drain the sebum out of the cystual wall, until the wall is broken down into sebum, it's going to refill.

Put hot compresses on it, or use icy hot. It'll get worse before it gets better. But eventually it will develope a head if you're persistent with the compresses. 5 mins on, 20 mins off repeat. Then Icyhot. It should develope a tiny head and feel softer (you'll see wrinkles) this helps break the wall down.

Wants it POPs, it will shrink immediatly. If you drained it, it may take 5-7 days for the swelling to go down and the discoloring to go away.

If you want to know how these things can get nasty, talk to rhia about bartholin cysts.

Like mBlank said, I'd just go have it zapped at a day spa. Or... you can make this into a positive experiance and get a whole facial while you're there.

Well, I just said, I have a rule. Anyway, Max et al are giving me an immediate gratification route, so I'm going to try that before resigning myself to waiting for it to go away. Thank you, everyone, you are all angels as usual.

for cystic acne, to prevent scarring, don't touch them until you have a very clear whitehead.

Best way is cortisone shots. I love the acne patches that different companies used to make... I would use a good dollop of strong salicylic acid containing acne gel and put a bandage on it. It can help the head come up much sooner- and once the head pops and drains, it's on its way to recovery. Clean and repeat twice a day.

^ I'm pretty sure cortisone shots damage future collagen production in the injected area, meaning that you could end up with a pitted scar.

Scarlett_vancouver, I had cortisone shots and have not had pitted scars. However, messing with cystic acne, especially stabbing a needle in it, might cause a scar. I think she has already crossed the danger zone. Furthermore, was the needle sanitized???

The thing is, as a licensed esthetician, I/we have been trained to extract in these situations. This is why we tell people it is not good to mess with your own face. There is a thing called an infindibulum that surrounds the pore. It is the little muscle that expands and contracts. When you stab and damage that muscle, you will create a pitted scars. Estheticians are taught not to do that, at least good ones. I am sure a doctor who has been taught to do cortisone shots knows this as well.

Yek ( or someone) made a suggestion for huge zits to put mayo on it for several hours. It worked for a couple of deep zits I had. Not sure what type of bump she's got but maybe that would work-- otherwise all the advise about shots and the electric zapper used for facials sounds pretty spot on
