I love to hear the Pope(s) condemn Islam for being violent and forcing people to convert under threat of death. They always act like Catholics would NEVER do such a thing.

I'm not necessarily a big fan of the Pope, but the uproar seems to be about a statement made by a leader of the Orthodox Catholic church centuries ago, which the Pope quoted during a discussion on the inappropriateness of using force to spread faith.

Certainly he could have brought up the Spanish Inquisition, but that came about during a time when the Spanish Catholics did not answer to Rome, and probably would have caused more confusion to the audience he was speaking to.

Excerpt of Pope's speech below: The uproar is about the quoted phrase at the end of the second paragraph.

I was reminded of all this recently, when I read... of part of the dialogue carried on - perhaps in 1391 in the winter barracks near Ankara - by the erudite Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and an educated Persian on the subject of Christianity and Islam, and the truth of both.

    l
In the seventh conversation...the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God," he says, "is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats.""

Just saw this on the news, laughed me ass off. He said Muhammed brought only evil and death to the world, and the vatican said he didnt mean anything by it. :-) Last pope was awsome though.

I think it's funny (potentially dangerous) but funny. I'm not fond of what the Pope and his church stands for, but c'mon...Islamic religious leaders very often insult other religions and ways of life.
