    Default lower back pain

in the last few days i've developed a very sharp, pinching sort of pain in my lower back. it started slightly to the right and has migrated to the center.

things like bending over at the waist or squatting make it worse, and the pain radiates into my butt.

i've been taking advil and using icy hot...is there anything else i can do to help this get better? other than taking time off of work...

Try to stay very still for a couple of days. Use Therma-care patches or a heating pad. Believe it or not, good ol fashioned Doan's extra strength pain relievers really do work the best of the non-prescription back pain remedies.

This happens to me every once in a while when I'm unable to keep up with my daily workouts for back strength (travelling, too busy around holidays etc.)

    no, no no!!

Don't ever put heat on an injury. It further inflammes it.

Get yourself to a chiropractor. I am currently in clinic as one, and it will help your pain. If you have radiating pain it is because you have a pinched nerve, and the nerves that go from your low back to your glutes and leg are getting cut off. Heat, advil, etc....they will either increase the pain, or mask the pain but not cure the problem. It will eventually only get worse.

    Its worth the investment!!

Had this exact sort of pain a few years back. Yes, a chiropractor can do wonders IF it's not literally a herniated disk. I had very little flexibility in my back in those days. Currently, I'm taking yoga classes (see the Bikram thread) and that has helped dramatically. I haven't had any of those wincing pains--even tho I was very scared of hurting my tender back when I started yoga earlier this year.

So, when you feel better, consider yoga.

I have a disk in my lower back which slips out from time to time (from a bad car accident 12 years ago).

I always had bad lower back problems until I took up Yoga. Now it'll get stiff in the morning, but after a few stretches, I'm good to go.

Oh - and if you can find one of those ab balls, just like on it on your back for about a minute. Try to roll up and touch your hands on the floor over your head. A minute of this stretch is like a couple of trips to the chiropractor.

    Other stretches to try:
    Anything for your hamstrings.
If you don't have an ab ball, just lie on your back and roll up into a ball for a while.

In addition to Yoga, do stomach crunches.

i'm a bit afraid of chiropractors, as i've known a number of people w bad experiences. not that there aren't great chiropractors out there. i'm just worried about finding one, heh. but if this doesn't improve i think i'll have to...

i hope it's not a herniated disc. get thee to a real doctor, not a chiropractor. you don't wanna mess with something that may be serious. if it's not, at least you'll find out what it is, and the best treatment.

    i don't trust chiros either.

also, examine what you've been up to lately. i had this exact pain because i took up tap dancing suddenly at 30 and sweet jesus, it doesn't seem like much to look at, but the jarring impact hurt my lower back in the way you described.

it has subsided since i stopped tap. it would hurt for 6 days, stop, then start up the minute i went back to tap class. no more tap for me. also happens if i sit in a crappy office chair, run on uneven pavement or act like i'm some kind of krumping expert. lol. what a retard... (note: don't try this at home).

have you been doing anything new and different exercise/work-wise?

If your interested I saved this the other day for my boyfriend who has Chiropractorphobia too. (-:

    CHIROPRACTORS HIT BACK AT CRITICS
Chiropractic care 250 times safer than anti-inflammatory drugs

Chiropractors will hit back at critics of their profession next week with a frank national awareness campaign called ‘Chiropractors Answer Back’. The campaign claims that chiropractic care is far safer than drugs or surgery.

i think it's a combination of new pole tricks, lifting very heavy buckets filled w horse manure at the barn and stress.

one of the girls at work just passed her national massage therapy exam. she felt my back said it seems to be a pinched nerve. she also said it felt like it is being pinched by muscle rather bone. she rubbed it out a bit and it hurt like a bitch, but feels a Lot better now.

If you go the chiropractor route, give them 30 days. Anything you try should give you some sort of result within 30 days. Please, though, avoid the chiropractors who claim they can cure asthma, stomach ulcers, diabetes, etc. Those guys are the snakeoil salemen.

And, a good Chiropractor will take x-rays to make sure that there is nothing else going on.

It sounds like a pinched nerve. I was in a car accident 2 days before I had my daughter and it threw my back out royally (I suffered "worse injuries" since my body was full of prolactin). I had to live with the walking, sitting, getting up, moving over, bending, squating, etc pain for 3 months before my body would take to any adjustments (prolactin stays in a woman's system up to about 3 months after delivery to help the body go "back" to where it was).

And, it hurt to rub it, and the only thing that relieved it was manipulation...and yeah, Yoga and Pilates.

^^^ yeah. it's tightening up again now =(

but she'll be at work again tonight, so hopefully she'll have a minute to work on me. hehe. she always jokes about setting up a table in the dressing room for the girls....but, man, she really should!

one of our djs is actually really good at working the knots and stuff out too.
