Man! I eat spinach almost everyday!
what if you're cooking in a recipe? an hour in the oven would kill it off, right?

You can always get frozen for a recipe. Im eating it today b/c I bought the bag a week ago.

^^^ I know but I just bought a HUGE bag from costco. half is already gone, but I was wondering if using the rest would be a bad idea if its going to be cooked.
I cook mine too! I have a bag. I heard about this on the radio today and figured it was fine if cooked.

Yeah, cooking it will kill the bacteria. The news just said many stores around here (Tri-State) have voluntarily pulled it from shelves anyway. That sucks for me, becuase I don't really care for cooked spinach, I prefer it raw on sammiches or salads.
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.

It's way cheaper anyway if you just buy it fresh, out of the bag..
There are other bugs associated w/ bagged veggies such as listeria. Fun!
It sucks that we live in a world where our food can kill us. I've never been the same since I read the book, "Fast Food Nation."
DAMMIT! Grrr. This happened a few years ago with green onions from Mexico... they were using sewage to fertilize the fields, and E. coli and other bacteria were being trapped in the layers of the onions. Fast Food Nation is a really great read on this kind of thing, and boy did that book piss me off.
When RAW SPINACH, of all things, is unhealthy... what kind of a world do we live in?
LOL! When I was living in s. tijuana/n. rosarito they were illegally diverting sewage through the community next to the beach... and lemme tell you, there was some amazing flora sprouting from it!Originally Posted by Yekhefah

Ahh.. And I just ate a ton of *bagged* spinach last night.. :S
I eat bagged spinach every week, but luckily haven't had any in the past week. My mom called me today just to ensure I hadn't eaten any either.
Wouldn't just washing it really well get rid of e coli or other bacteria?

According to an article posted in the lounge, no. Washing it will not get rid of the bacteria. However, cooking it really well is supposed to kill the little fuckers.Originally Posted by kittykat1971

I was really late on that one.![]()

i just heard about that last night.
Damn.....I love spinach. I'm going to lay off of it for a week or two, or at least until they sort this out. Or i'll buy the frozen kind and cook it with something. must use other leafy veggies.

I feel like a real idiot. I was all aware and avoiding bagged spinach at the supermarket, and then my dumb ass went to brunch today and ordered a salad of mixed greens. I realized after eating it that there was probably a ton of spinach in it.
It wasn't very good either, and the service sucked, and they charged me an extra $2 for cold dry toast without telling me they were charging for it, and it wound up being $20 for a mediocre salad with too much dressing, cold dry toast, and one glass of champagne with grapefruit juice. I'm already pissed off about the experience so I really hope I didn't get E. coli from it too.

I had some baby greens recently as a salad ( w/ salmon, and mangos...mmmm) anyway I was wondering if I should be worried...? I bought the mixed baby greens from O organics.
it's just supposed to be spinach
^ Maybe for the E coli outbreak, but there is some troubling info out there concerning the way that many greens are bagged and other contaminants (Bacteria like I mentioned before- listeria.)

The greens are packaged with nitrogen, so they look fresh and edible on the shelf, but as soon as you unbag them, the aging process starts and they begin to wilt. It gives me the heeby geebies. (Although fo the life of me, I can't really find a link b/w nitrogen in packaged salad greens and bad health)
