    J.K. Rowling Challenges Airport Security

Rowling says she won argument with U.S. airport security to take `Potter' manuscript aboard

British author J.K. Rowling says she won an argument with airport security officials in New York to carry the manuscript of the final "Harry Potter" book as carryon baggage.

Had security agents not relented, she said on her Web site, she might not have flown, she said in a posting dated Wednesday.

"I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't _ sailed home probably," she wrote.

    Bring back White Star!

She has the money for a private plane - if she wants freedoms as she expects and desires - she is gonna need to pay for em.

Otherwise - she gets to live life under the eye like the rest of us schmucks.

^^ Good point, Deogol, about her being able to charter her own plane. However, one can't expect her to part with an unpublished and much-anticipated manuscript. That thing would be gone the second it was out of her hands. I'm not saying that she should be given special treatment because of who she is. Rather, the security officials could clearly look at the manuscript, flip through the pages, x-ray it in her presence if needed, and see that it was only paper.

I have no concern with her plight, having just arrived in the US from Australia, we were luckily allowed our carryon stuff... however, Madcap I loved the thread title, it had me ROFLMAO!!!!!

What's the problem? I don't understand why a manuscript would be an issue.

Well since the liquid/gel bomb threat, people flying from Brittan have be subjected to full body cavity seraches, and not allowed any caryons or such.

    Well Qantas has more details

Travel from London or connections through London (Heathrow)

As changes to baggage restrictions are ongoing across the United Kingdom, for the most up to date information refer to the BAA website.

The following security restrictions apply on flights departing from UK airports and international flights transferring at a UK airport.

Customers are permitted one small bag (45cm x 35cm x 16cm) to be taken through the security screening x-ray point and carried on board the aircraft.

    The bag must not contain:

    * Any liquids, cosmetics or toiletries, including gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures, perfumes and the contents of pressurised containers that have been obtained prior to the security checkpoint, for example, toothpaste, hair gel, deodorant, shaving foam and aerosols - these must be checked in as hold baggage.
Note: Once customers have passed through the airport security checkpoint in London, goods, including liquids and gels, can be purchased and taken on-board the aircraft.
    * Cigarette lighters are not permitted in hold baggage or through the security search.

    The bag can include:

    * Electronic equipment including mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as i-Pods).
    * Keys and books.
    * Prescription medicines (up to 50ml) in liquid form are limited to sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), as long as they are verified as being authentic by copy of prescription.
    * Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted by the accompanying passenger in the presence of a security agent).
    * Laptops may be carried on board but must be removed from the bag for x-ray.
    * Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened.
    * Wheelchairs are permitted but will be thoroughly searched.

We advise passengers not to include containers that may leak in their cabin or hold baggage (for example, bottles, flasks, tubes, cans and plastic containers).

To help minimise delays ensure that other than the items listed above that all items are placed in your checked baggage.

Okay, but a manuscript is none of the above. It's paper. When did paper become an issue?

I'm guessing size, then again someone probablly wanted to read it before it was published.

That's exactly what I was thinking. A sticky fingers was hoping to convince JK to fork it over...

    Haven't you heard?

The pen is mightier than the sword. That is quite the risk having something more powerful than a sword on the plane!
