    Default Question about teeth whitening

How does teeth whitening work in you have a fake tooth? It's one of my top front two teeth so I am worried that if i get my teeth whitened it will stay the same color because my fake tooth was a set color supposed to match the rest of my teeth (which were off white).

    (sorry if this sounds confusing)

It will stay the same colour, no matter the whitening process.

Really? Damn. Maybe they could paint it to match the whitened color? There has to be some kind of a solution, other than putting in a new tooth because that pain was sooooo horrible

    ^^^
I would think that some kind of painting would be an option...but i know it won't lighten with the other teeth. I had an surface filling that had to be changed out once i had my teeth whitened. A front tooth.

Talk to a cosmetic dentist that's doing your whitening. I believe though, that if you have a crown, you'll have to replace the crown.

well there's no way in the world im going to want the crown I have now taken out and replaced because I had to sit for 4 hours in pain to have it put on. I really, really hope I can just get it painted or something

I'm not even sure if what I have is a crown, the whole tooth (when I had the accident) didn't get knocked out and left a tiny little stub on which they built the new tooth. Is that a crown?

The pain you endured when you first had the crown placed included, more than likely, the root canal therapy which was necessary to remove the damaged pulp tissue (the "nerve" of the tooth).

The stump that was left, or that was built up around a post placed down into the root canal filling material (gutta percha) is referred to as the crown prep. An impression is taken of this stump, and the lab makes the crown to fit perfectly...

It sounds to me like it would be a matter of your dentist removing the old crown, taking a new impression, and having the lab fabricate a new one to match your whitened teeth.
Good luck....if you have any questions, please let me know....

You can't change the color of a crown. Porcelain won't stain (and therefore won't lighten). It's very expensive and you might not get as drastic of a color change as you think. It might match pretty well in regular light (black light is killer for fake teeth).

And FWIW, anyone with that went to dental school can call himself a "cosmetic dentist", but there is no such specialty. There is such a huge profit involved in that area, so many dentists like to consider themselves such to get the vain people like me in.

When I was little I chipped my two front teeth. They have since been bonded, but when my teeth are whitened, the bonding does not change color. So, I have to wait a few days after the procedure then I go to the dentist to re-bond or veneer my two front teeth to match the ones lightened. Some dentists will do everything in the same day, but I've been recommended to wait at least a few days after the procedure before color matching my two front teeth. Good luck with whatever you decide!

if you are going to get a new crown put on, go to a dentist that uses CEREC... it's a CAD/CAM system that mills the rown in-office in less than an hour, and is actually equal or greater to a lab-made crown.
