Default to tan or not to tan?

so they're trying to overhaul everything at work and make it more "upscale". apparently now this includes pressuring us all to go tanning, get highlights, etc.

I have absolutely no problem with the stricter dress code, but I do have a big problem with being told to go tanning. I'm half Irish, half Italian, so i've got really dark hair and pale skin, and I make a lot of money off of guys who love that look. I get compliments on my light skin all the time; I get guys buying dances because they think I look "exotic"...it's what sets me apart from most of the girls at the club. Plus, I look AWFUL with darker skin--even a natural tan on me looks weird.

So...to go along with this bullshit and please the management, who will undoubtedly be on my ass about it...or to ignore it and keep my hair and skin just as it is--and keep banking off of the numerous men who like my look? (plus there's the whole skin-cancer-risk thing, which I'm not crazy about...)

what would you do? any ideas on how I can get away with keeping things as is and still placating management?

Why don`t you just talk to the management and explain this to them?

hey, I consider not going on stage to be a blessing!

As long as they don't fire you, just tell them you are tanning on low to get a base tan.

Your management should recognize variety is important. Maybe a simple wardrobe change will satisfy them. If they bring up the tanning, tell them do to medical reasons you are unable to take exposure to UV rays. They could push it and tell you to use self tanner, to which you could say you're allergic. But really, to expect every girl to sport a tan is silly. Just make sure your look is upscale in other ways.

This is great advice, and should work. As long as you're an asset to the club (make money, no drama, clean) you should be fine. Clubs rarely fire girls b/c of something like this.

I don't think it sounds like it's in your best intrests to switch clubs. Also, if everyone becomes barbi carbon coppies you'll prob. make even more! good luck.

Wow, that's pretty one sided of them. I'm a pale girl naturally as well, and many people tell me I look like a beautiful porcelain doll. I take that as a compliment!

Tell them if they want you to go tanning and get highlights you would gladly oblige at there expense.

Don't do it. I wouldn't. I'm sometimes jealous of beautiful pale skin. I need to have a tan. It's just what suits me.

i agree with this too....great idea. tell them you are very allergic to many things...not only UV rays, but also strange chemicals, things which would include self-tanner and hair dyes.....i'm sure if you explained things to your doc, he/she might even be willing to write a note (maybe), considering the ridiculous nature of this request. good luck....

My room mate and I were TANorexic and unforunately she came down with cancerous cells on her moles and has to get them taken out montly. She now uses fake tanner and still looks dark. Another friend of mine who is extremely pale (strawberry blonde) uses fake tanner lotions occasionally and gives her a sun kissed look. Coppertone, SUN and Neutrogena spray work well. DONT MYSTIC. It will get all over your sheets and clothes! It also made my room mate break out.

Or tell them someone in your family died of skin cancer which puts you at a much higher risk and so that's why you can't tan and then also tell them that your customers love your skin the way it is and you're afraid if you switch it it would hurt your earnings. Or you could also lie to them and say you are tanning but you're someone who just can't get a tan. That isn't far fetched because I happen to be someone like that, I just can't tan if my life depended on it.

My old club did something like this, but they were fairly smart about it. In general women look better if there is some obvious "upkeep," right? Two of the most common ways of doing this are tanning and getting highlights in your hair. That doesn't mean YOU have to do it, necessarily. It's just a couple of things to point to for the girls who don't really do much to enhance their appearance. See what I mean? I hardly ever followed the new rules my club put in place because they didn't go with my look. But I HAD a look, an obviously successful and deliberate one, so they didn't fuck with me. I wasn't one of the girls who needed the rules. But they can't just say, "Hey girls, look more 'upscale.'" So they point to a couple of things they can think of that make for a more high maintenance look and make those "rules."

Honestly, I'd talk to them about it, impress upon them that you understand and appreciate the club's desire to up the ante on looks, but explain that your look is deliberate and that it works very, very well for you. You're not trying to be contrary or rebellious, just stating the case for diversity.

I agree with Dottie. They probably didnt make the rule so that all their girls would be tan and highlighted - just so that they would make an attempt. Just be honest, I think.

    good ideas, ladies; thank you!

i did end up talking to the head manager (we had a meeting about the new dress code and such today, which actually went well). Used your suggestions and told him that a) i've got a unique look that i'm going for and my customers appreciate it and b) i've already gotten pre-cancerous moles removed, so i'm not going to take the chance on tanning (this is actually true, too).

he was surprisingly cool about it! Basically said that i should just think about it and that maybe it would help my money. But it doesn't sound like they're really going to push it or mess with me much--he said that my hair, makeup, body and outfits are up to standards, so it wasn't a big deal. He also said that I might want to learn some nifty pole tricks to enhance my presence--hey, no problem there!

So it sounds like you're right about them just wanting us to up the class factor in general.

I actually might be willing to try that tinted moisturizer (i think Jergens makes it?)...that would just give me a little hint of colour without being too drastic, though.

I use this, and it's very subtle on me. I'm pale too, which works for me, but once I got used to it, I do think a little bit of color looks healthier. If you decide you don't like it, a few showers and some good exfoliation will take it right off.

But I second everybody who says "upscale" doesn't necessarily equal tanned and highlighted, as long as you look nice in other ways.

Other ways of looking upscale could be always having your manicure and pedicure in tip top shape and wearing nice (costume) jewelry. Cheaper than full head highlights, less dangerous than tanning. Quality perfume also makes everything a little more classy... guys definitely notice the difference.

i'm the whitest girl in my club. i can't tan, and i don't want to because i think it looks retarded on women like me. no offense to anyone, but irish girls usually look ridiculous with tans. i think tans look good on girls whose skintones naturally develop nice tans. on most really pale girls it just looks unatural and forced. my skin is pale with a nice golden undertone (which you might have) and i think that looks way better than the splotchy burnt leftovers of a bad tan. if they ever bring it up again, just explain to them that it won't look good on you. just like some girls look good in some colors while others look terrible. a tan is not for everyone. most people like whatever skin tone looks good on the girl, but when people tell me "you should get a tan, you're so pale" i say something like "ok.. -really- try to imagine me with a tan" then they go "oh...... nevermind" heh i'm glad they've been cool about it thus far.

Yeah we ladies from the British Isles don't do so well with sun...

I'm more of a dark pale than a milk white (my dad is a dark Russian), but tanning = freckles and spots and no color.

If I do get color, it's really light, fades quickly, and destroys the evenness of my skin.

I agree. No one wants to be in a club where everyone looks exactly alike. If you look good with a tan and like to do it, fine. But giving into pressure to get a tan when you know it will make you look worse instead of better is just plain stupid. You obviously already know how to make the most of your "exotic" look.
If the management approachs you about tanning/highlights, tell them that you have a large base of customers who likes you the way you are. And that new customers will appreciate you being different from all the girls who look like they spend hours in the sun. Not to mention the detrimental effects to your hair/skin from bleaching and harsh light.
