    Default poll = trashy

i changed clubs recently. i worked at the same club for over a year, then i worked at another club (which was terrible) for a little over a month. now i'm at a more upscale topless club. it's working out good so far (i've only done 2 shifts.. so we'll see). the one big bummer about the club is... no poll. i kind of like having fit upper arms and legs, and i attribute most of that to my poll work. i don't have the money to shell out on a poll for my place right now. the club manager told me the reason they don't have a poll is because it's "trashy" and "tacky". i really wish that wasn't the reasoning. i've seen a lot of amazing poll work that couldn't be considered trashy in any way. hell, some of it is downright artistic/gymanstic. it's a form of dance as far as i'm considered. if you hire classy girls, (which they usually do anyway) you shouldn't have to worry about "trashy" poll work. i don't understand the negative view of poll dancing in america. you'd think with all these housewives picking up the S factor lately, we would have gotten over it.

    i miss my poll!!!!!!!!

i'm going to have to get one sooner or later anyway, since i want to teach eventually. i guess i'll just have to do push ups or lift my hand weights till then. *sigh*

I don't think it's tacky at all. In fact i think the opposite.
I do think it sucks though when a pole is placed where it renders the rest of the stage useless.

oh i agree with that too. the problem is, at this club you can't do any floor work either. i don't do too much floor stuff anyway, but WTF do you do without a poll or without touching the floor. i feel like a retard teetering around in my heels with nothing to balance me for 3 songs. it also gets repetative.

I'm also confused about the pole-work=trashy thing, although it seems to be a commonly held opinion among strip club managers. Pole-work is pretty much the only thing going on in most clubs that constitutes legitimate entertainment by most standards. With more and more women and couples coming to clubs, managers and owners need to realize that the stage is important again. People are coming to the club to be entertained, and all they're getting most of the time is a bored girl on stage wiggling listlessly, and dying to get back to her regular in the VIP.

i worked at a club in missouri with no pole. i learned how to adapt with floor work. even though it sucked. now i don't work there but learning floor work as upped my routine, combined with the pole.

Wow, that sort of sucks. I wouldn't really know what to do with myself with no pole and no floor work. I don't think pole dancing is tacky at all. I could relate if he said no booty shaking or something. Are there enough girls on rotation so you don't have to be up there too much?

At my club we don't have a pole for the same reasons and aren't allowed to do floorwork either. I honestly like it that way but then again, this is the only club I've ever worked in so I don't know anything else. Hmmmm, we don't work in the same club do we?

Wow... they should just get little rotating disks for you guys to stand on then. It really seems to take the dance out of dancing. I'd go nuts. If I compare pole work to floor moves, and had to chose which one was "tacky"- I'd have to say floor moves. Have you tried to make your own pole?

The whole "Pole work = trashy club" concept is an out dated concept. In the 90's many upscale gentlemen's clubs wouldn't have poles because they didn't want to be associated with the blue collar neighborhood bars. It is also next to impossible to do pole work when wearing a floor length gown, so the pole was more in the way back then.

Ask the manager if he thinks "bell bottom jeans" are in or out. He is likely to think the "mullet" is a new hairstyle those "hippies" wear.

I seriously could not work at a club that had no pole. The pole becomes an extenstion of who I am and we work fluidly together. All I can think if there was no pole, plus no floor work, how BORING!!

I've been on stages like that, you walk from custy to custy, lots of interaction and eye contact and then very slowly strip. I do lots of simulated touching too. It sort of all works out pretty good - until you realize you're only halfway through the first song

i worked one day at a upscale club that had no pole and a runway-type stage. the dancers would all just kind of strike poses while slowly dancing and smile really really big. it really sucked.

Oh, man, I don't know what I would do! Reading this thread, I relaize that my entire stage set alternates between the pole and the floor. Seriously, there's really not much in between - if I'm not doing one or the other . . . it's only because I'm transitioning from one TO the other. I would feel like such a tool walking and posing!

Paris, I see what you mean about the gowns in upscale gentlemen's clubs getting in the way of pole work - there's actually a dancer who comes through our club occasionally that wears gowns (at least at first - she's nude or close to it by song #3) and still manages to work the pole like few I've ever seen! After a few minutes she sort of flips the front of the dress up, and/or half wraps it around her - makes it look very sexy, too.

i don't know. are you in FL?

and further on the subject, it DOES suck, but i'm not going to leave the club because of it. i like the club so far (other than that and some bitchy girls). ulitimately it will be the money factor that decides if i stay or go. all i know is that, so far, it seems like a whole lot less contact for the same, and possibly more money.

that outweighs out my poll woes by far. still makes me sad though. heh

You are really limited as to what you can do on stage there. I think thats why they only hire gorgeous girls, because they have to be able to entertain with their looks alone up there. All the ladies there just do like model struts and move around slow on stage.

I don't think its trashy either. Floor work is... well... less classy, so I can understand that. But no pole? Oh well

I like having a pole and being able to do floorwork, but let's be honest here: there's plenty of dancing to be done without props. I don't think that it takes the dancing out of it at all; rather that it shows just how many of us can't actually quote dance unquote. Those dancers are striking poses and strutting because they ain't got moves! We are used to our familiar stages -- the first time I had to dance in a club like that, I was at a total loss as well. But then you realize that you can move sexily without having to climb, swing around, or crawl on something (though if motherfuckin' Bob Fosse can have his dancers on the floor it's definitely good enough for strip clubs).

I think it helps to take a look at burlesque videos and jazz dancers for ideas on moves and steps to use; you just take them and stripperize them by exaggerating the hips, shoulders, and hair tosses. It's plenty possible to be entertaining and have enough to do without poles or floorwork, it just takes getting used to. But just think how much better than everyone else you'll look by being able to work that stage rather than just posing!

^^ Susan started what I was about to say! Not only Burlesque... look into Belly Dancing and Latin American dance moves. They all require you to be upright ... no pole and no floor work! I know having a few of those moves in my "reportaire" (sp?) have been handy!

Burlesque.. Jazz.. Belly Dancing and Latin American ... just stripper-ize the moves.

I love not having a pole or floor work, b/c I think I get the same (or more) amount of tips without them. Easy money=great.

What can I say, I'm a little lazy.....

i disagree.... mainly because i "quote unquote" danced for 9 years (non stripping). tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, lyrical. i also gogo danced for clubs for many years.

i've been wearing "stripper heels" for a year and 1/2 now and i STILL can't do 1/2 of the things i'm used to be able to when i dance. they're worse than pointe shoes by far. i can dance, i just think it could be 47 times better if i were able to do more things on stage. just because someone is a great dancer doesn't mean you want to see them do the same things over and over again.

^^^ I didn't mean to say you couldn't dance, or that pole and floorwork aren't valid elements of dancing, just that we get into a rut of doing a lot of polework and floorwork and don't do much else.
