Default I think I might want a cat, but i'm clueless

Okay, this is odd bc I was never a fan of cats....like ever. I always thought kittens were cute though. But now i'm thinking of adopting one. I had a dream that I had this HUGE cat that had cute "cartoon looking" features, and long hair!Felln love with it! So I have a couple of questions. Cat lovers please help me out. I want to make sure i'd be a good candidate to adopt one.

I always got the impression that they were two faced animals(well bc they're stereotyped as that) and would backstab their master. Is this even true? Sorry, silly question...I just don't know much about them. Someone told me about this lady who had a cat, and all of a sudden that thing crawled on the ceiling and wanted to attack her. What kind of cat does this?

I like to cuddle with animals like a loveable dog and not getting bit or scratched. My co-worker's cat bites her...eeesh. I only thought dogs did that. So it's biting and scratching...those scratches hurt. Not comfy to cuddle with. Are they even that affectionate too? I just never saw a affectionate cat either...ok, so I must live under a rock.

Oh and the nails. How do you clip their nails? Do you just take them to the vet for that? I can imagine getting attacked by it, if I tried cutting its nails. What if I decided to declaw it? What's the deal with that...would it be bad?

First off, cats cannot climb the ceiling! And second, please do not declaw the cat. It's not like clipping their nails; declawing is an amputation of half their fingers. Imagine if someone cut off all your fingers at the knuckle. Declawed cats suffer the same problem as human amputees - phantom pain, etc. Usually, they're also dead meat if they get outside, because they can't defend themselves as effectively.

If you're really afraid of scratches, you could adopt a cat from the shelter that has already been declawed. A lot of assholes declaw a cat and then throw it out with the garbage when it no longer matches the furniture or if they have a baby.

Or, you could adopt a kitten and train it to recognize you as mom. I never really needed to clip my kittens' nails - get a scratching post and they'll keep their own nails in shape. Kittens will play around and try and scratch you, but if you hiss loudly and bop their nose (not too hard, but firmly), they get the message that they are not to do that. That's how their mother teaches them not to play rough. Just make sure you wait a second for the message to sink in, and then love on them.

As for personality... cats' personalities are as varied as humans'. Some are affectionate, and some are assholes, and some are shy, and some are aloof. Just spend some time getting to know the cat's personality before you adopt him or her, and bring home a cat you get along with. My cats have generally been quite affectionate, but one in particular was a hateful bitch and no one mourned when she died (she was about 10). Like people, sometimes you just find an asshole, but most are pretty easy to get along with. The cat I have now is so affectionate he never leaves us alone!

And if you do adopt, go to a shelter. Those guys are under the barrell of a gun and you would do a world of good by saving their lives. And make sure the cat is neutered promptly! Kittens should be neutered at 8 weeks or as soon as possible afterward. A kitten that's neutered quickly is usually (but not always) more likely to be docile and affectionate.

You say you have never seen an affectionate cat. In my experiance cats are affectionate behind closed doors. My cats rarely come out when companys around. One of my cats is only affectionate with me(she will not lay with my boyfriend).I think cats are choosy about who they bond with. A lot of cats tend to mellow out as they get older.

When you go to adopt you may wat to consider one of those no kill shelters. The cats get more one on one attention and the people that run the shelter can usually give you a good idea of a paticular cats temprament. Many humane societies get the cats in and adopt them out, not really knowing a lot about the cats.

Please, Please dont get a cat declawed, its a partial amputation. Imagine getting your fingers cut off at the first knuckle. If a cat is raised getting its claws clipped they usually have no problems with letting you do it. Any cat book will tell you how to clip the claw and how much to clip off. I use my fingernail clippers for my cats. If clipping the claws yourself is difficult you can have a vet or groomer do it for around 10$. You can also have caps put over their claws. I dont know much about this but any vet should be able to answer questions about that.

    I hope this helps.

Ok, I wasn't aware about their knuckles being amputated. Ouch. Okay, so that's a no.

And, I sware. This lady told me that her mom had to give her cat away bc it climbed on her ceiling and tried to attack her for no reason. That he dug his nails on the ceiling, it must of been a cheap ceiling then. lol. That made me question their behaviour more.

    Thanks for the tips.

I agree with the shelter idea. Usually there are so many cats in desperate need of adoption that those with unsavoury tempermants or behaviour problems are put on a 'special needs' adoption list...or sadly bumped to the bottom of the line (I say sadly because many cats are turned in 'assholes' by asshole people, but anyway). So, though they may be scared when you look at them and first bring them home (please realise that many adult cats are terrified and freak out a bit at first in new situations, but after a while they will eventually come out from under the bed) you'll probably get a decent cat from any humane society worth its salt. Many adult cats up for adoption are already spayed/neutered, possibly declawed (which like Yek said, is rather cruel. I know vets who refuse to do it, and it's illegal in some countries like New Zealand because it's considered so cruel), and even microchipped.

So yes there are many affectionate cats out there! I've known many many cats, and there always seems to be someone they love. I've seen monster scary cats (who attacked every staff member at the clinic) turn into coo-ing, purring darlings when they heard their owner's voice. Like dogs, they will get attached.

A local veterinarian could probably answer your questions really well. Where I used to work we had 'kitten packs' and 'puppy packs' for new pet owners explaining every possible nuance of their new pet's behaviour. It also listed myths and facts. One big myth is that cat's are so independent as to not require much attention. They are less dependent than dogs, but an indoor cat that is never played with or petted becomes a fairly depressed pet. So my suggestion would be to read one of those kitty crash courses to be really sure you want one. Because they live a long time, and sending an unwanted cat to a shelter isn't something you want to do. Good luck!

Oh and some shelters are so maxed out that they seek foster parents for cats. You could foster parent a cat if you're unsure you really want to own one. That would give you the best idea.

Okay.. from the top.. first realise that cats can live up to 30 years of age with proper care so are you really in this for the long haul or do you just want something cute like a kitten? Are you prepared to deal with the cat in all its glory (the good, the bad and the ugly) ? Are you prepared to love this animal from the day you acquire it to the day it leaves your life ?

Once you can answer yes to all of that THEN you should think about adopting/purchasing a kitten. BTW, try to purchase a kitten from an animal shelter not a pet store. Plus GET IT NEUTERED !!!!! There is absolutely no reasonable reason to leave any cat intact these days. Just go to the shelter and you see the results of people not having their cats neutered... all those kittens and cats which have been dumped.

Also, are you aware of the maintenance a long hair cat entails? You will have to brush/comb it's hair every day plus it will malt like a motherf--ker!! I'm not kidding... my flatmate has a medium haired cat and he malts badly even during winter when they have a thicker coat.

As for being two-faced... nah... they're just as loyal to you as you are to them. Provide them a good home and they won't find the need to look elsewhere. It is only when they think they can find a better deal elsewhere that they will go wondering... and looking.. for another home.

Neither of the two cats in my life would think about leaving... they KNOW they have a very good deal here. Also remember YOU are trained by the cat not the other way around. So if you don't like having to do the bidding of your cat (as such) do not get a cat.

Those who like to be leaders ... cats are not suited to you. There is a saying that goes something along the lines of "Cats were treated like Gods once and they have never forgotten that" hence that's the way they like to be treated.

In the end, there are a million and one websites and online groups where you can ask these questions and receive really informative answers.

    I've just brushed the surface.

30 years?! I used to tally how long they lasted (I dealt with the euthanasias) and I never saw one live longer than 25. Usually no longer than about 18 or so.

But maybe they live longer in Australia. Seriously, it's cold, damp, and icky where I live.

I've never seen a cat live longer than 23, either. Most live around 15 years. Mine is about 17 and still kicking, but he is toothless and has arthritis, and he sleeps a lot, even for a cat.

I have three cats, two from the SPCA and one purebred Siamese from a breeder. All of them have different personalities, just like people. Usually they will not scratch or bite me unless I am playing too rough but even if they do bite it's more of a play bite. My 11 mth old bites harder. I keep their nails trimmed which is not too difficult to do but you do run the risk of being scratched or bitten out of fright. Make sure your vet shows you how to do it properly because if you cut too far down you will cut the quick and hurt the cat. They also make nail covers called Soft Paws that you glue on the cats nails. In my opinion they suck. They're expensive and my girls chewed them off in a matter of a week. Cats are great if you want a low maintence affectionate pet. You don't have to walk them, take them outside, or give them baths (unless you want to). All they really need are regular vet visits, a clean litter box, fresh food and water and some love. Hope this helps!

Oh, I remember this one cat that my asshole exbf has. He never use to pay attention to it much and use to beat it for no reason when he was in a bad mood. The poor thing would run up to me and hide behind my legs or stand next to me. I use to yell at him for doing that. Jerk. He had this cat, bc his asshole exgf left it at his place when they broke up and didn't want it anymore..so he got stuck with it. I think that was the only cat that I found affectionate & sweet towards me, others seemed shy.

I believe it was the expensive type too, so he said. Big one that looks like a tiger with big eyes. Nice looking cat. I should've brought him with me, even though at that time I didn't want a pet...I could've found a good owner for it. Damn, and he asked me too. I regret not taking him with me. If he'd ask me to keep again, this time I would. He was adorable.

Everyone has said it and I can't disagree, go to a shelter. My Thunder was one, and he is one of the best cats I ever had.

You will have to brush often, maybe even clip if the knots get too much.

Avoid any type of purbred. Especially Siamese and Persian.... they can be really really weird, and mean. I know all too well what evil Siamese can be. If any were ever treated as gods, I'm sure it was them.

Cats are usually only bad for a reason, like you did not feed them or give them attention. Also when it comes to food some are just picky.

I like cats because they usually hone in on your mood, and act appropiatly. They do not need the exercise of a dog, and are good at learning the necessary. Somtimes they play hard to get, somtimes they deamand attention. They are often there when you need them.

Personally I've always found that my cats reflect my personality. Thunder was quite a bit like that. Funny if I was exercising and losing weight he often would as well. Well it seemed like that anyway. Also when we took the dog for a walk he would follow.

My friend's grandmother had a cat that lived for 23 (indoor/ outdoor too). He was a fixed male. He was still sweet even up to the end. He died of diabetes. : (

I had several adopted strays so they had wild free lives, I got to observe how different cat personalities can be. Varying from the most noble maternal females, sweet-natured males...and then the ones that would piss on your leg or let their kittens die. I guess cats are just like humans.

My friend has a "special needs" cat that was adopted & some people said for her to put the cat down because it seemed that the cat would not survive life as she was born. (The cat has two legs- her front paws are folded like chickenwings so she looks and walks like a kangaroo. The cat is named Joey, i.e., baby kangaroo. .)
(PS We are crying with laughter right now because I said no one is going to believe what I'm posting about Joey but I'll post some pics later.)

Anyway, the "cat" dream might have meant something else. Or maybe you should consider a small dog, or ferret. Cats are great but they are haughty, time-consuming & like to roam, or at least do whatever they want. Just like strippers!

Funny you mentioned that about the Siamese, bc I was gonna ask if there's a certain breed I should avoid? I'm sure they're good pets though still.

    Exactly right.

They also like to play games. Just be careful you don't encourage the leg grabbing too much. Thunder would often plan an attack, and hide, then grab come out of no ware and grab my legs till I gave him some attention.

They can sctrach, and will bite. Mostly it is a love bite. They know how to control their sctraches, so don't expect anything bad if you have not hurt them. Usually if they go to sctrach, it is because they have had enough attention and it is time to stop. See, they do like to train you.

I think you should definitely avoid Persians. They tend to be quite haughty and aloof. Siamese don't have the long hair you want, but Burmese do and have Siamese-type markings. I would avoid a purebred though. You can get a regular old domestic longhair at the shelter for much cheaper, and it will be healthier and have a better attitude.

I had a mixed siamese and alley or whatever. Looked purbread just a bit lighter in color, fuller in body, and white feet. Hector was a quiet and gentle cat, occasionally a hunter, but usually happy to play with paper and string.

My grandmother had a purbred, she was mean nasty and a ninja in her prvious life. This cat would strike you and draw blood if you sat in its chair. The only person the cat liked was my grandmother.... it could even call her 'gram'. -oh and that cat would not do it immedietly either, you would get struck when you least expected it.

    I'm a crazy cat lady.. I have 4 that I rescued
Cats really are beautiful loving animals and actually have a big sense of humor but they do require alot if you want them to be a little buddy
The litter box is a huge stink but you can figure that out.
With my 4 I found it best to have 1 litter box and just dump it daily.. yes daily just dump the whole thing
When they eat they get food all over as I think they like to half spit out what they eat and then step on it
Their paws collect whatever and track it all around so you will have ALOT more dust
Other than that .. they do need alot of attention and are moody on as in they really do remember how you treat them
My loving husband, I wont say it to his face cause he'd take great offense has 2 cats.. one is the angriest thing around and the other is a scaredy cat.. both of which are hard to find "cute"
Hes good to them but when they annoy him he will push them away or ignore them .. they remember and thats why I figure they are like they are
All of mine are from different parents/gene pools and all are just love bugs.. I attribute it to really treating them with respect and not treating them like objects when you just arent in the mood to be bothered.. alot like kids..
If you get one.. invest in them emotionally big time.. after the awkward wild kitten stage they will be love muffins
And I agree dont declaw (((((
AND I love plants but just cant have them.. they eat them or if they are ones they dont like artificial they will find a way to knock them down ..so I sacrifice and dont have them.. i could always do the spray bottle thing when they bother one but then I would probably get pissed off little boogers.. just stuff to think about

If your home often enough or don't mind them being out a bit, you can do away with the liter box. Thunder was taught at the RSPCA (all the cats there know how to use the box) and after a while, he would just tell us when he needed to get out. If you can't let the cat out, or at least not often, have a literbox for certain. Cat excriment is nasty, think amonia an poo. I don't think anyone mentioned that one yet.

    What everyone else said plus:

Some cats are affectionate. Some are not. No matter how affectionate they may be most cats choose affection on their terms. This means that they come to you when they want to and sometimes need their "alone" time.

At my parents' house there are two of the most sweet and beautiful cats I have ever known...and they are Siamese. They are pure love. No breed is "evil." Some breeds (like Siamese) do not like to be left alone and require more attention than others. This means you should get at least two if you don't plan to be at home a lot. A needy cat left alone = a destructive cat. Plus Siamese have VERY LOUD voices and like to use them.

With so many abandoned cats out there I hope you'll consider adopting one from a shelter. There are also various rescue societies for certain breeds of cats where you can adopt cats that have been given up by their owners.

Problem cat behavior: get a squirt bottle to use when cats scratch things they're not supposed to scratch or jump up on kitchen tables or counters. Get them one of these (they love them!):

Cats don't pee or shit outside the litter box unless (1) they're sick or (2) the litter box is dirty and stinky. I scoop the poo out of the litter box every day and change it twice a week so that it won't stink.

Also put out a water dish changed daily in a place separate from their food dish.

And remember that long haired cats produce more fur which will go all over your clothes and house. The amount of fur my short-haired cat produces is astonishing. I comb her every other day and keep these all over the house:

And I forgot to mention...forget about houseplants or flowers. And get used to cleaning up cat barf caused by hairballs. The more you comb them the less of the problem this should be.

Avoid any type of purbred. Especially Siamese and Persian.... they can be really really weird, and mean. I know all too well what evil Siamese can be. If any were ever treated as gods, I'm sure it was them.QUOTE]

Haha, I have to disagree or either I just got really lucky. My purebred seal point apple head Siamese is the best cat I have ever had. She follows me around the house like a puppy, comes when she is called, loves my daughter, sleeps in bed with me every night and is the most affectionate cat out of the three that I have....

Well I have known good ones, and bad ones. I miss the good ones, and remember all too well the bad ones. I swear my grandmother's cat used to be a ninja... but if my theroy of personality reflection and treatment is anything to go by... well I know why.

Krystal, and Smartcookie, it really really really depends on the owner. I've known burmese, persian and siamese all bad, and at least 1 good one of each. My particular Siamese was nothing like them. For me it has just become a general rule.
