    Default Rental Cars?

I've never rented a car before and (surprisingly) the car rental business is something I've never worked in... so color me n00bish. I've made the reservation online, but it didnt ask for billing information whatsoever. I'm assuming I have to pay there? So what's the drill with doing this? I'm over 25 and I have a debit card/VISA. What do I have to do? What should I expect? A walkthrough would rock my stripey socks.

Well I don't know the exact proces of where you are located, but around lil ole Texas if you reserve it online when you go to pick it up you just walk in, say you've made reservations over their website - if it printed anything out show them that if not then theyll look it up - they'll ask to see your driver's liscense to ensure you are over 25, you'll pay with your credit card, they'll tell you their policies on if you have to pay extra for insurance, the amount of miles you can trek, returning it with gas, etc. because those vary from place to place, then they will give you the keys and show you to the car. That's about how it works around here....

If you don't have a major CREDIT card you may not be able to rent from that company. A few companies will allow debit cards but they usually want you to bring proof of address, insurance, and possibly put down a large deposit (around $300). The company's website should tell you all the details - they should have a "policies" link or something similar.

It's pretty normal that they don't require billing info at the time of reservation because you have to bring in your card, ID, etc. If you don't have the proper stuff at rental time, they won't let you rent.

    Which company is it?

In general rental companies like to pre-authorize an amount on the card. In my experience, it starts at 150, and I've seen it go up to 1500. That amount is usually made up of the insurance premium that you would pay if you had an accident, and the expected rental duration, so it could be a little less or more. If you prepay rental you can sometimes get them to not pre-authorize as much.

Hi Paige. We just got back from your neck of the woods and needed a rental. We used our debit card and the only thing they wanted from us was to see our round trip tickets or your computer printout of your flight information.

No extra charges. This was Alamo Rental. Hope your company does the same thing. Good luck.

Enterprise allows debit cards, but they put a 400 dollar hold on it. So make sure you have some loot in your account to cover that. I know you said it was Budget, but it'll probably be somewhere in that ballpark. Then when you return it they take off what you spent and put the rest back in the account. Be warned that this sometimes takes a few days to go thru, so don't count on said cash to be back right away. I bounced a check once because of that.

yea they alway do a large authersation. (god im the worst speller ever) around 300 or so. that will not fall off for around 3 business days. so dont plan on using that money if you dont have more than that in your account.

edited to add i just saw your printout from the site. however. it has always been my experiance with whatever card they do make sure you have 300-500 available for a "deposit" of sorts. maybe they dont do that anymore. i used to rent in 99-2000

uh, make sure you take care of the car. they will charge you for scratches, rocks that hit the windshields, etc..

return car with full tank, you will be charged higher than the normal rate for them to refill the tank.

^You just have to return it with the same amount of gas that was in it at the time you pick it up, full or whatever. And yeah, they will ASSRAPE you for the gas otherwise, something ridiculous like 6 bucks a gallon usually. They should walk you around the car first to do an inspection for dings, scratches, etc. Make sure to point out anything you see, or they could possibly say you did it and charge you for repairs. Oh, and if you don't have your own car insurance, you'll have to use theirs, which jacks the price up. Bring your insurance card just in case, as proof. Let's see, what else. Oh, if your man is planning on driving it, you'll need his license as well.

Just be sure to bring your id, proof of insurance and something to prove your address. A bill in your name is a good proof of address. Be ready for them to charge the $300 deposit on your credit card. After you've had the car for a while, they tend to help themselves to payments on your card so be sure the money is there. When you return the car, they will credit your card back the deposit fee and any overcharged rental fees.

oh and also ALOT of insurance WILL NOT cover rental cars forceing you to buy the high priced insurance they offer. like 15 dollars a day. or take the chance of wrecking and owing the full price of the car!! my insurance would not cover rental cars even tho i had full coverage on my other cars.

With the authorization hold....Ask how much they will hold. the charge may only be $150 but they can hold more than that. Say they hold an additional $500 thats $500 thats not available to youy on that card. When I worked at B of A we had people go on vacation and do this, planning to use their debit card only to find out the funds were on hold and not avilable.

I only rent with Alamo. I don't use a credit card, just a debit card and I never have a problem.

I rent with Budget all the time (and one of my sisters works there now). Its $300 minimum or more if the actual cost of the rental is more than 75% of that. It is NOT the cost of the rental PLUS $300. The hold is released in about 72 hours (depending on your bank). I always end up having that money available after the 72 hours (when the rental is longer than that) if that's of concern to you.

Also, get a receipt when you fill up, even if you pay for your gas with cash. I had to fight with Budget once b4, and even though the receipt only had the amount on it, it was enough to have them reverse the additional charge.

They do NOT need to see your man's license if he lives with you, or is married to you. They have NEVER checked that (since at least Jan 05), and they haven't even listed the additional drivers in that catergory in quite some time. (you are responsible).

You will have to have proof of address, but they have never asked for proof of insurance (although they sometimes ask the name of my insurance company), and I never opt for Budget's.

We rent them from enterprise a lot and its easy. We do it online and just pick the car up when we need it. Call your insurance co and see if your covered on a rental, they will push their insurance but its HIGH! They will need to see anyone's DL who you tell them will be driving the car, they always ask us anyway. You have to bring it back with the same amout of gas as it had when you picked it up.

    From Budget's website:

Will my credit/debit card be charged when I make the reservation?

No. The card will have a hold placed on it at the time of pickup for $300 or total estimated charges, whichever amount is greater. It's perfectly fine if you choose not to return the car on or before your scheduled return date, but we will place up to three additional holds on your credit card (depending on how long you keep the car) to cover expected rental charges. Upon your return of the car, all holds will be released, and the actual cost of the rental will be charged. Please note that your bank may take up to two weeks to post the released credit hold to your card. Unfortunately, we cannot be held responsible for any returned checks due to credit hold processing.

If you know you're not going to return the car with a full tank, pay for the tank when you pickup the car. If you pre-pay the fuel, it is around the same price as if you filled it yourself. If you don't pre-pay the fuel, you will be charged 2 to 3 times the current gas price per gallon.

Many airports do not have the rental locations on-site. If they are not on-site, they will bus you to and from the terminal. Make a note (mental or otherwise) of how long it takes to get from the terminal to the rental location. Make sure you account for this time when returning.

Check the car before you leave the lot. Look for any large (over 1 or 2 inches) scracthes, dents, etc. Anything smaller than that won't be a problem.

What are the dates you need the car? This weekend enterprise has 50% off rates. My wife and I are getting a car from 2pm friday until 2 pm monday for $34.81 unlimited miles unlimited places to go. They hold $200 on a cc but you get it right back when you bring the car back. We have used it many times and have never payed more than that. If they dont have the kind of car you requested when you get there you get a FREE upgrade! I think it's the best deal there is but that's my $.o2

I've only rented a car once. All I know is when I went to pay for it it was TWICE what I thought it would be once you added in all the other shit they add on.

They probably stuck you with their extra insurance, which costs an arm and a leg. Sometimes they are really sneaky about getting you to agree to it without explaining the costs.

"Sign here, that the car is okay. Initial here. Wouldyouliketoaddinsurance? Initial here."

You gotta watch out for that upsell.
