    Default Valerian?

I know there's a lot of homeopathic remedy users out there. I suffer from occasional sleeplessness and recently bought an herbal tea that has a pinch of valerian in it. Puts me in a nice relaxed mood so that I can fall asleep with no groggy side effects in the am.

The only thing is you can't use it consecutively for more than two weeks or your body gets used to it.

Anyone else use this on it's own? Or should I stick with the tea (also has peppermint in it, yum). It was made by a woman in an herbal shop. Is it dangerous? I've googled it but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for...firsthand knowledge.

    Thanks in advance.

My boyfriend is into it, he says it works. For me - none of the homeopathic stuff seems to do anything. I still try it, but it just doesn't seem to have any real effect on me. I have trouble sleeping though. Sometimes it takes me a few hours to fall asleep. I should try it again, maybe take twice as much or something.

I found valerian to work well. Try mixing it up. Trading it for chamomile sometimes. Or damiana tea.

Valerian is only dangerous if you have an autoimmune disorder, or you have the gene. If you have the auto immune disorder gene. The Valerian will bring it out to active instead of inactive. It is not also good for people with heart promblems. Valerian also works with your nervous system. So if you have any diease that affects your nervous system. This will be a bad thing to use. Also when using Valerian it is best not use in high doses, unless it was you was told by an herbalist. When in doubt seek an herbalist.

Diamiana has a wierd effect on me. If I drink this tea for midcycle cramps(obviously my fertile time), it seems to make me very amorous.

I just bought some today because there was a buy one get one free and i've had some restless nights lately.

    a few questions:
    1. i would know if I had an auto immune disorder, right? Also I would know if I had any diseases that affected my nervous system, yes?
    2. I don't want to grow dependent on a sleeping aid. is this possible with valerian (I would assume it is, but the OP said after a couple weeks it stops working for her.) I just want to make sure that if I use it a few days in a row, the one day where i don't take it, I'll be able to sleep without it.

Here's a link to a site that has a lot of info on Valerian, as well as links to other sites that can tell you more about it too. Hope this helps!

Valerian root is great but you shouldn't take it long term as you'll most likely build a resistance to it over time. It's also not good for folks with liver issues.

Melatonin works awsome. It's naturally produced by the body and doesn't have any toxicity levels etc. You can pick it up almost anywhere.

It's not necessarily dangerous, but it could be overkill. You're probably getting just as much benefit from the peppermint (which is a mild anti-anxiety and mild muscle relaxant).

I tend to think that the herbalist who made it probably knows what she's doing...

I agree with Sirona. I use Melatonin and it works great.

I am also a melatonin user and I love it, I fall into a nice restful sleep within 15 minutes of taking it and mine are cherry flavor from gnc and i love the way they taste. Its like a little treat before bed and no more laying awake waiting for sleep. I've been taking it on and off 2 years now.

If I have run out of other things to take, I can take it. It takes me a few to work though. The smell sure does suck though! LOL. There is a tea out now that has it in it... that seams to work nice too, sans the smell.

You don't love that ultra-stinky cheese/bad fruit smell?

OK, I had to bring back this thread.

I have not been able to sleep well lately. I hate doing it but both nights that were bad I took a little Advil PM. I woke up just after it stoped working. 4 hours the first night, and the second night I took one pill and woke up 3 hours later. I did not feel rested at all. I felt like those hours had just been taken from me and I felt even more tired.

So last night I forced my self to work (and it was my best night money wise?). I had picked up some valerian root capsules from Wild Oats earlier. After work I poped two w/ food and water. At 11:30 I woke up feeling like the most refreshed human ever. I am so happy. Tonight I am hanging out with friends, we are having a sushi making party. I won't feel gross! I feel great! Finally.

^ In Janice Shofield's book, Discovering Wild Plants she says that using valerian for more than two weeks can cause depression.

My dad's been popping Validol (russian valerian pill) for years, we brought back tons of it from Kiev and Moscow. Russians sure do love the stuff, but they say its for the heart rather than the nerves. It doesn't do jackshit for me.
