    Default Goddamn Fucking Internet

My internet keeps dying. Over and over. It will work for a minute, then die. Tech support for my ISP has been nothing but a giant pain in my ass, and haven't been one damn bit of help. Grrrrr. I'm dying without my stripperweb, let alone the ability to pay my bills online.

Sxybrat, do you have dial-up? If you do, the problem could be your modem. A couple of years ago I was having the same problem. I did some checking and found my computer (hp) had a cheap crappy modem. Went to Wal-Mart bought a new modem for around $30, after installing it I hardly ever got disconnected.

No, I have DSL, for some reason it keeps going out on me. I've tried everything I can think of, it just randomly turns on and off. DSL light will start blinking and my internet light (on my modem) will go off. Then it comes back on. Dammit.

-Have you just added a new phone recently?

Do you have a line filter on every phone in your house?

Have you tried going to the 'homepage' of your router and making it connect?

Could it be a cordless phone nearby?

Can you get cable? In most cases, DSL is the same price as cable...

BTW...you could have a faulty modem (not in the computer, but the actual DSL modem). I would demand a replacement modem. If you still have problems, then its got to be something in the line...

Ok, someone who is computer savvy please help. I've figured out that it has something to do with my cordless phone (though it isn't new, nor has it been moved, and my internet has worked for the past 3 months...but i digress..) Internet only works when I turn on the phone, sit about 3 feet away (where my couch is) and call someone. If I turn my phone off after that, then the net will continue to work, as long as I don't move. BUT, when I unplug the phone, and just set it in the other room (not plugged in, not in the jack, nothing) it won't work. WTF! I'm confuzzled

...like VG said it sounds like a line drop(not modem). Although i dont understand how 3 feet is different than 6 feet or how "as long as i dont move" affects anything. Assuming the drop is happening inside your home wiring, try replacing the lines from your PC to modem(assuming its CAT 5) to wall jack(phone line). Go to the hardware store and get new phone line and CAT 5 cable. And get the "shielded" kind if they have it. Past that, your home wiring would need to be tested by the phone company or your IP would need to test the line from their end. Might try pluging the PC into a different phone jack before buying cables too. I have a cordless too and it does not affect my PC.

One other thing please. Click on START, then RUN, then type in CMD. A black DOS window will appear. Type in "ping yahoo.com" without quotes. Report back the info. An example of the info is below:

Pinging yahoo.com [129.71.2.16] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 129.71.2.16: bytes=32 time=133ms TTL=252
    Ping statistics for 129.71.2.16:
    Packets sent =4, received=4, lost=0

...guru's please pitch in with your advice.

Does your DSL modem plug directly into the phone jack?

-DSL can be a nasty beast. I know it stuffed up on my father once and he has never gone back. It worked fine for a year, then kaplut. There are a lot of factors that can screw up DSL. Sometimes if they add something to the exchange, it can screw it up as well.

Definitely call your phone company. I have DSL and was having the same problem. Once they came out and fixed the wiring and I installed filters, I was fine.

It's internal wireing. I don't think the three feet away matters as much as using the phone. You may want to have your telco company re-provision your line. When phone usage increases your connection activity and capability, that normally suggests you're either in a multi-family home/apartment complex or you have bad wiring.

DSL is done by digitally splitting the phone line at the D-MARK using a POTS splitter.

The POTS splitter splits the line to provide voice and a DSLAM for data. This is why in-line filters need to be used on your phone, because if something doesn't force your voice to run in the right frequency, your DSL will suffer.

The in line filters hook into your wall and into the phone cord to your phone. If you don't have one of these look for one.

You DSL modem should NOT have one.
