    Default Must quit smoking

I have to stop smoking. I started when I was 14. I have always had a cough, but I guess i never really noticed it. 2 weeks ago, I got this terrible cough, and thought I was getting sick. I never got a cold, but the cough will not go away. I have to take nyquil every single night just to sleep or else I keep myself and my boyfriend up all night long with this cough. My chest doesn't feel so great either. I have to quit. I have no idea how. I was going to do a juice fast, and quit then, and do a whole body detox thing, but I couldnt do it when I wanted, and now I cant find the right time, as I do not want to work while going through it. I am scared to stop. I cant leave the house without my ciggs. I tell myself I wont smoke today, but within 5 minutes I light up anyway. I have no idea how to even try to stop. I know I dont wanna cough like this forever. Im only 25 years old. To young to have cronic health problems. Where do I start? I have looked into laser therapy, which dont sound to good. I looked into hypnosis and a drug therap thing where they give you welbutrin and buspar, a shot every 2 weeks and a patch you wear behid your ear. That sounds expensive. I have to call for pricinng tomorrow.

Has anyone here quit? How did you do it? Coold turkey scares me, but I doubt I would ever be able to stop if I tried cutting back gradually. Should I go buy a patch and just quit? does gum work better than a patch? Can you do gum and a patch at the same time?
    Help!

I quit after smoking for 13 years using nicorete. It helps the nic fits and whenever you feel like a smoke just chew 1. Just don't chew it like gum,did that the first night I started using them and it made me puke. 2 years clean and counting.

I started smoking when I was 14. Developed an addiction/habit by 16-17 years. Quit the first time at 21. I have been smoking on/off since then but seemed to have dropped the addiciton. I can go months without smoking. I crave of course , but can put it off. But when I NEED a smoke, I have one.

Will power. It is hard to do. But you can.

Cut down to 2-4 cigarettes a day. Then go cold turkey. You will feel dizzy/nauseated/anxious at times during withdrawal. The spells pass in a few minutes. The first 2 days of withdrawal are said to be the worst. The first month after your last cigarette, you are home free of the physical addiction.

I think if I cut down, it would wreck everything. Like, ok, I smoked this one, why not smoke another. How coudl I cut down to 2-4 a day? I smoke 5 when I wake up in the morning, the first hour. I roll ou of bed, get a drink, and sit in from of the computer for an hour waking up. reading the news paper online, checking my websites. I smoke about 4-5 ciggs right there. Then I get breakfast, smoke after that. Get a shower. I usually smoke 2-3 ciggs when Im getting ready, putting on my makeup. I associate smoking with EVERYTHING. when I get in the car, when I talk on the phone, whn I put on my makeup. They say change your routines, but smoking is a part of everything I do. I screwed up doing the juice fast last time, but I think I will work the next 7 days striaght, then take 7 off, and do a juice fast and detox. Quit then. I wont want to smoke and put toxins back in my body.

I wish I coudl just throw out all my smokes and ashtrays and just suffer for a few days till the worse is over, but my boyfriend smokes, so I have to try to quit while watching him smoke away.

I quit smoking after one of my dr's suspected i may have a minor heart murmur. It's not that big of a deal, but I was 26 and it scared the shit out of me.

Wellbutrin (if you have health insurance, it may cover it for mental health. Tell your doc you've been feeling depressed and DO NOT have a history of seizures) and the patch worked for me. Super fun bonus with Wellbutrin, my orgasms were freakin' unbelievable while I was on the stuff!

If you have a oral fixation, like myself, carry sugar free chewing gum with you. My friend liked the fact that smoking kept her hands busy. When she quit she taught herself origami and would make a crane everytime she got an urge to light up.

Patch and nic gum may be overkill. If you overdo it with the nicotine replacement products, you'll get sick... nicotine induced dry heaves suck.

I quit cold-turkey. Weening doesn't make sense. You just "give in to the craving". I smoked for several years and quit when I couldn't run more than a few feet without feeling like my chest was going to explode (I was up to about 2 packs a day...ick).

What helped me was to just tell myself that THIS time I won't smoke a cig...and then drink lots of water. Every time I had a craving for a cig, I drank a glass of water and then just waited it out. Yeah, it was hell...yeah, I'm sure I was super mega-bitch for a while...but within a few days, I felt better. Water helps flush the nicotine out of your system (reducing cravings) but it also helps rehydrate your body (nicotine flushes water out of your system). I haven't smoked at all since then. It also helped to avoid the activities that I was used to smoking with...like drinking. After almost months of no cigs and no alcohol, I slowly went back to partying...but without the cigs.

It takes a lot of concious effort, but you can do it. You don't need the patches and stuff. Just take it one moment at a time.

    Good luck!

Thank you all for your help. I havent smoked in 2 hours now. Luckily, I just recently started drinking a lot more water, so every time I want to smoke, I drink water. Worried about tomorrow morning, but I guess Ill cross that bridge when I come to it.

haha, I did the same thing with Denny's mozarella sticks. Everytime I craved them coming home on a roadtrip (passed like 15 Denny's) I would have to chug water. Eventually I got so sick of drinking water, the next time I saw a Denny's, I didn't even want it.

I know it's not the same kind of addiction, but I do think the water trick will help. good luck.

I started with a no-smoking in the house rule. I came to appreciate coming home to an apartment that wasn't stinky. This made me naturally cut back on sitting at the computer and chain smoking. Now I had to interrupt what I was doing and go out on the patio. Once it got cold outside, it just wasn't worth it to go out on the patio and freeze my butt off for a cig. So I smoked less and less, pretty much just when I was at work and/or in a bar. By then the only time I craved was when I was drinking. After I stopped dancing, I was no longer in bars very often and the desire to smoke just wasn't there anymore. Now I just don't crave them at all.

I quit after 10-12 years of smoking when I was 25 (25th bday, actually). I did it cold turkey, and I allowed myself every vice except alcohol and cigs for the first 2 months. Ate ANYTHING. I think a juice fast puts too much stress on your body to be a good start to quitting- you need to coddle yourself and make it as easy as possible. I was able to work and be around smoke after 6 weeks, but no sooner. It's been 22 months for me! If I can do it, anyone can.

I wish I knew why anyone STARTED smoking. I just worked a mere two nights in a club where smoking is allowed indoors, and now I feel like shit, my stomach is sick, my head hurts, I've completely lost my voice, and my throat feels like I had little shards of glass for dinner. TWO NIGHTS, and I wasn't even smoking, just in the same room - and this isn't a very smoky club. It was even worse in Vegas.

When will the rest of the country get with the program and send the smokers outside for a fix?? Might be easier to quit too, especially in winter. This is the one and only thing I really love about California.

I've had bad reactions to all the "smoking cessation" aids, so cold turkey is my only choice. I already need to drop 7 pounds or so, so I am very concerned about weight gain. Any ideas?

I've never smoked, but all of my friends who have and quit did it via wellbutrin. THey swear by it. Apparently, it gives you some pretty vivid dreams, too.

I stopped smoking last night at 10:30 pm. Today I have it 2 ciggs, but threw them out right after lighting them. Its tought because my boyfriend smokes the same kind I did, so the temptation is hard, althought he is doing his best not to smoke in front of me, and keeping the ciggs away from me.
I feel like crap, and I know Im gonna have a tough time at work tonight. I have a headache, and it kind of feels like I took to much cough syrup...you know, when your head feels all cloudy and floaty....

All in all, Im very proud of myself, I am doing good. For some reason, I dont want to eat anymore, Iev actually eaten less today, and have drank a lot of juice and water

I have been trying to quit for a while now. I have cut down quite a bit and now I only smoke at work or if I am drinking. I agree with Yekhefah though, if there was no smoking in bars I it would be helpful. If I had to go outside for a smoke at a bar it would help me quit. I can go days without but as soon as I wak into the club or have a drink I have to smoke a cigarrette. If Im busy at work I dont have time to smoke. Its those slow days at work that get me. One day Ill quit all the way.

So you didn't go to work at all when you first quit? I think the hardest part about quitting is being around other smokers and smelling that smoke because it makes you want one.

It's especially tough when your club is a smoking establishment. I used to ask co-workers to blow thier smoke in my face... If I smelled smoke on someone in the dressing room I wanted to lick the nicotine off thier fingers... I had eloborate smoking dreams, like I was wraped in silks with people fanning me with palm leaves while I was sucking down a Marlboro light... I know, it's fucked up. If I can quit while working in a smoking club, anybody can.

The crappy thing is Denver became a smoke-free city but my club claims to be a cigar bar in order to be exempt from the law.

It figures as soon as I move away the city goes non-smoking . Im surprised they are letting them claim that they are a cigar bar seeing as they took the actual humidor room out when I was still working there but whatever.

I just had an appointment with my doctor this morning to talk about smoking cessation since I have had such a hard time and so many quit attempts that haven't lasted. One of her more interesting suggestions was about "replacing the tape" that plays in your head when you smoke -- think about all of the things you are expecting to get from smoking (relaxation, stress release, etc) and all of the qualities you attribute to the tobacco and instead think about replacing those thoughts . . . basically use a little cognitive therapy to aid with quitting. I am also going to throw Wellbutrin, acupuncture, and hypnotherapy into the mix and see if using everything at once helps. I'm setting a quit date for Sunday, October 8th since we'll be flying to San Francisco for a couple of days and I know I won't need to be at work for at least three days. I will let you all know how it goes once we're there. And I too would love to hear from those of you like Scarlett who smoked for over ten years and successfully quit -- especially tell us what wonderful effects you saw after quitting, like better skin or whatnot. That would be good motivation.

Id like to hear more about the good benifits, the better skin thing is a motivating factor for me too.
