    Default Computer Question

Forgive me for posting computer problems here, but I don't have many people to ask that know about these things.

So my old computer got a tons of viruses, despite me having software for that. I imagine it was my fault for using filesharing websites to find a lot of songs. (Mostly hard-to-find club mixes and other dance music....NOT much run-of-the-mill copyrighted stuff). Anyways, I completely lost my entire operating system and it became a pain the ass trying to reinstall it, so I bought a new computer all-together.

I still have my old computer. Is there any way to retrieve any of my music from the old computer? Or is it lost completely? I tried to play around with it today and lost 2 hours of my day. If I could even just access the song lists themselves, that would be helpful too.

other people may have far better options. but heres mine.

    option 1.
assuming the computer has a floppy disk reader, make a bootable floppy disk. access hard disk, copy filelist to floppy disk (dir >myfile.txt). If you had a crosswired parallel cable (<$5) you could copy computer to computer (ll5.exe).

    option 2.
boot off operatnig system off of cd/usb. move filelist or perhaps music over internet. if you're having problems reintalling windows this may be even harder.

    option 3.
perhaps the easiest but involves a screwdriver. remove old hard disk form old computer and attach to new computer. set from master to slave and you just boot up new computer and it's attached as a second hard disk.

ps. have found limewire to not have any viruses.
many people set up 2 partitions on hard disk. 1 for windows. one for data. so it easier to reinstall windows by wiping everything clean.

I manage a computer support business and deal with this stuff everyday. Do NOT use Limewire. If you want the filesharing capabilities download and PAY for 360share pro. It isn't expensive at all and it's a membership for life. It will have everything you need with NO spyware, viruses, or anything. Limewire is NOTORIOUS for viruses. I have to uninstall this shit from peoples computer everyday because of the problems it causes. Call your local computer support business and just bring them or have them come get the old computer and just tell them that you want a data disk of all the files on the old hard drive. I do this all the time it isn't difficult at all. It shoul cost you less than 150 or 200 dollars. You will get everything back, and no further problems, but please do not use free file sharing programs, I PROMISE they will do nothing but cause problems. THe membership for 360share pro is like 40 bucks forever. That's it. THat's a lot less than paying for your computer to be repaired. Click here and just download it and then pay the fee and you will be fine.

What player where you using do you remember?

Also I would need to know if you stored your music in a certain directory.

Are you looking to fix the computer? Or do you just want to get the data off so you can install a new system?

There are ways, but I would need to certain things like what OS you where using.

    What OS the old system?

What mp3 player where you using?

Do you want all your files or just your mp3s?

Do you want the system fixed? or do you just want the files and tossed?

Do you have access to cd-burner?

If you have access to a cd burner, I can talk you through burning a bootable cd that will allow you to access the directories on your hard drive then burn selected ones to a cd, or the whole entire hard drive.

    Let me know.

This is all a ton of gibberish to me!! I completely appreciate all the responses.

Space_Cadet_28: Option 1 is very confusing. Option 2. I'm having a hard time re-installing b/c I am missing 1 of the discs I think. Option 3 sounds easy-ish, but would that infect my new computer?

metal_n_mitsu: Not a bad idea, $150-200 is not all that expensive, especially if I would get the songs themselves. If it would just get me other files and just a listing of my music library, it may not be worth it though. I've had my new computer for almost a year now and I have no need for anything on my old one, except the music.

Mast: What player where you using do you remember? As in "Windows Media Player"? That's what I used to listen to music, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

Also I would need to know if you stored your music in a certain directory. I used Bearshare, and upon installation, I got a folder called "Bearshare Downloads" on my desktop.

Are you looking to fix the computer? Or do you just want to get the data off so you can install a new system? Getting the data off it would be just fine

There are ways, but I would need to certain things like what OS you were using.
What OS the old system? Windows 98

What mp3 player were you using? Windows Media Player?

Do you want all your files or just your mp3s? Just the mp3s. I've gone this long without the other files....I have no clue what else I'd need. No sense in getting picky

Do you want the system fixed? or do you just want the files and tossed? I have no need for it beyond getting the files.

Do you have access to cd-burner? My old computer has a burner I installed, my new computer has Windows Media Player with a burner. So, yes.

I hope I answered everyone's questions OK. I think I've just convinced myself that I need to take some computer classes to learn some basics, b/c I have no clue what any of this is!

Pulling your old music off of your old computer is like trying to draw blood from an HIV positive person and leaving the virus behind.

You need to find a way to clean the viruses off before you burn or transfer anything into your new PC.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm OK with just getting access to the list itself. I guess it's not even a big deal. I had gotten into a conversation with a friend the other day and we were comparing song lists and ipods and what not. She had made a comment about how many awesome mixes and dance songs I used to have....so it just bothered me and I can't stop thinking about it!! I think I only had about 800 or so songs....no more than 1000. But that it nothing compared to the 200 I have now since I can't remember what the good euro/club songs were called from the lates 90s to a year or two ago.

    windows 98 is 1 cd.

if you moved hard disk, it wouldn't reinfect new computer. by putting the hard disk as second you wouldn't boot off the second hard disk, so none of the files will be executed. you could copy all the mp3's and delete every other file. mp3's can not contain viruses. there may be a few complications but transferring hard disk not too hard. ask for more instructions if you want to try this.

try getting a full windows 98 cd and reinstalling the system. are you sure viruses are the problem?

i dont think any computer classes would teach any of this stuff.

really limewire has viruses? from the original source and not people bundling limewire and letting people download it?

if you have a floppy disc holder it is easy to make a bootable floppy. control panel->add/remove programs -> something about bootable floppy. boot off floppy disc. "c:\" should be your hard disk and you can "dir /s *.mp3" to find all your mp3 files.

You could re-install an operating system on the old computer, then load and run a couple of anit-virus programs (AVG and AntiVir are both free), then (1) pull the hard drive and put it into the new machine, (2) hook them together by ethernet or USB and transfer files directly OR (3) transfer/e-mail them to a third machine, preferrably with a different operating system (a Mac or Linux), convert the files to a different format (like .aiff), transfer to the new machine and then convert to MP3. That last one could take a while, but usually strips out non-music data.
