Exotic Dancing for a research paper...can you help?

Hi! I'm slashingbeauty, I used to come on here alot years ago, but I haven't been back in awhile--busy with school and work. I hope everyone's well, and I have a small favor to ask the ladies of stripperweb:
I am working on a research paper for an English course. My broad topic was, "Should exotic dancing be considered a "normal" job, or continue to be a social taboo?" I have refined the topic to (although I haven't figured out how to word it yet) focus on why dancers and gentlemen's clubs have such difficulty getting their business to be considered a "normal" job. i.e. No paychecks or insurance for most dancers at most businesses, city ordinances, inane charges against gentlemen's clubs. We all know it happens, but I need some sources to cite for this paper.
I am looking for books, articles, webcasts, documentaries, interviews etc., that will support the fact that it is difficult for dancers to have their profession be considered a "normal" occupation. If anyone has any suggestions, can you please comment this thread? I will come back and check it as often as I can. I would appreciate any help at all. It can't be an opinion paper, so it's got to be printed, somewhere. Internet or otherwise, as long as it's a credible source.

Thank you so, so much to anyone who can assist me!

Here's a documentary you might find useful...

You can see more info on it here...

    http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/po...ladydancer.php

The DVD is a documentary that interviews 4 dancers about their job and their lives. The interesting twist is that after a 5 year break they go back and interview the same 4 ladies to see how their lives and views have either changed or remained the same.

Best of luck with your paper.
If you can't win. Make the fellow in front of you break the record.

Look for articles written by Susan Bordo.....she discusses the role of body image, and how male and female bodies are viewed in society, the media, consciousness, etc. this might only be of slight use to you, as it does not directly deal with dancing, but rather how humans perceive sexuality.

My personal feelings are that western society is still about 100-150 years away from accepting sex work as a legit career or business. Yes, views about sex work are changing, but such a sweeping change, as in a shift in long held moral beliefs takea a looooonnnnnng time.

Take the suffarage movement for example- That started in the 1850's (around the civil war era) but women did not gain the right to vote until 1920. Even today women are not treated as equals in the work place, holding jobs that pay less than the jobs men hold. We still have yet to have a female leader of our nation.

So even now 167 years after the begining of the suffarage movement, we, as women, have a long way to go until we acheive complete equailty. You'll know we are there when women are required to register for selective service, and a female 5 star general is in charge!

http://www.gstringsforever.com/page1.html This site is a little old but for the links that still work, it's pretty good. It has many good books listed as well.

If I recall correctly, the book strip city had a tiny bit of info on someone (the author's acquaintnce) trying to get it to be more recognized. Been years since I read it, but it couldn't hurt you to read it too.

Stripper life and experience varies a significantly depending on the club and the country/state, etc. (I assume you are referring strictly to the American strippers and the mainstream American point of view). I'm not sure how it works in America, but in Australia an exotic dancer has to register oneself as a business. We're mostly self-employed and earn however much we work for. Why would dancers want paychecks if we can have cash-in-hand?

Just a thought... what would happen if stripping became socially acceptable: more girls would want to work, their boyfriends would let them, their friends and family would be more supportive, etc. With the increase of girls wanting work, it would become harder to get work or to get money... then they introduce insurance and paychecks (they take out the money out of your paycheck to cover insurance). The customers who went to strip clubs to see something "exotic" and "taboo" now seek a different way to thrill themselves..... - it just wouldn't be the same
