    help goin upside down.....

Hi I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, i have done a search and couldnt find anything on it, but i just cannot kick my leg up high enough to hook the pole to go upside down! its really frustrating, ive tried holdin my hands low, head high and high but i just cant seem to do it, i kick my leg about a foot away from the pol or i will actually kick the pole and stub my toe lol
Any advice will b greatly appreciated, i can do pretty much most of the moves just cannot go upside down! grrrrr lol

Call me a geek, but I watched a video I found on this site (search pole dancing and you should see the link). I watched the video over and over few times, then paused to watch little things like : If you're going to the right, which hand is on top? When you're walking around briskly getting ready to jump, which leg should go up first depnding on which direction I'm going? The one closest to the pole? How close is her actal body to the pole? Where on her legs is she gripping, etc ..That kind of thing.

I'm left handed, so you may have to reverse what I'm telling you, but....

When I'm going around the pole, I favor going clockwise. I'll pick up a little speed and keep my right are close to my body while gripping he pole. I think I jump off of my right and use my left arm (the one on top, a bout a foot higher than the right), for extra height and strength when pulling myself up. I grip the pole with both legs, and the better I've got, the more I grip the pole with my thighs rather than my calves. At this point I'm uside down, and I release my hands (u may want to have one hold on until you are comfortable). I slide down and fall into the "i'm doing something sexy" routine on my back. Really concentrate on keeping those arms close and really stressing/using your calve (sp?) muscle to get u up in the air....at least that's what i did when I was a high jumper (and believe me, being a high jumper and not being able to do what girls that were *sorry* out of shape/quite chunky did seemingly with no effort pissed me off...so, practice, practice...

It took me a couple months to get to this point, but it gets attention from the custys, and sometimes I'll grab the dollar bill upside down...yay

PM me if you'd like some more tips.....strengthening those abs is a biggie too. And hey, hanging up side down kills that time when it's boring on stage!

    hope this helps

it took me a while to do this. i'm a lot thicker on the bottom, so i wasn't strong enough at first to lift all that...and i was little afraid.

the first thing is that getting some momentum helps, so walk into it rather then starting from a standstill. or take a step back and then forward into.

another thing that made a big difference when i first learned this trick was taking off my shoes. (not during work hours) those things are heavy and it's amazing how much easier it was without them. without the shoes, i was able to get the hang of it and get stonger, so when i tried it with them on a few days later it was Much easier.

just keep practicing and you'll build strength. give yourself a day or two of rest in between so your muscles can repair themselves.

and don't over think it. just do it. thinking can make you hesitant and hesitance will make you stop yourself from completing the inversion, even if you don't realize you're doing it.

    good luck!!

when you're sitting on the pole and falling backwards try bending one knee behing the other leg. it's a Lot easier that way.

and if your abs are strong enough you can just go from the inversion back into the upright position so you don't have to slide down the pole.

If you are right handed you may find it easier to have the pole on your left side. Put your right hand just about your left hand at about head height. Make sure you keep your arms tense as you pull your legs up into your chest - LET YOUR HEAD TIP BACK. Hold it here for a second before coming back down. (this is just to practice and get everything in the right place)
Now try again, but take a step back first. Step with your left leg, and then swing the right leg up as you pull your body into the crunch position from before. If you can't reach the pole yet... just aim to kick the pole above your head.

Once you do get your foot to hook on, put the other foot *behind* the pole and slide your hands down until your body is straight... once you hands are infront of your crotch, you should have maximum grip with your legs.

depending on how you are trying to get up...via facing or via back.

Here is how I teach. Hope it helps.

From facing if you are right handed....pole is slightly to your right.

Right hand facing down at hip height on the pole..left hand facing up, grabs at eye level.
Left leg is swung...as ina cartwheel up to the pole.
Catch the pole with your instep (bottom of the inside zipper on boots) on your lift foot.
Push with your left foot to bring your body inverted.

    From Back facing.....(right handed)
Back on pole...3 points touch..head, shoulders and upper tailbone.
Grab pole behind your head..right hand on bottom, left on top
Tilt head to the left, you should be able to lay your head back with the pole beside it.
Kick up your right leg, pull with your upper body to allow your foot to hook the pole.
This one takes practice, you may only be able to kick at eye level until your abs strenghthen.

There is also another way to get into this position..via the scizzor spin.

Grab pole on right side of body with both hands.
Throw left leg up, raise the right as if you are going to spin.
Take both legs and wrap the top of the pole.

As far as loosing skin during these moves..I recommend boots, they protect your body!

Wow Alena. They are some tough moves. I've been pole dancing for over a year and I definitely can't do the second one. It's been a while since I tried the last one though.
I would not even suggest that my students had the strength to be able to do these yet. But 9/10 of them can do the way I suggested after about 10 lessons.

I used to have the same problem getting upside down, I could not get my leg high enough to catch the pole. But then one day I realized that rather than wildly throwing my leg up there, I actually needed to use my abs to bring my leg up to meet the pole. Now it's easy.

It's all to do with personal style and body type...I could ONLY get upside down the second way Alena describes for the longest time (except I kick with the left leg). It's apparently harder, but I still find it easier this way than the way that ends in a helicopter spin.

But Bubbles is right, it's 80% in getting the confidence to drop your head back.

I used to lay in bed thinking of moves, and my hands would get all sweaty, just like when I was standing in front of the pole!
Now you've done it... your muscles will remember how, and it will become easier every time!

Hi I'm a pole dancing teacher .. well substitute teacher.

I've helped plenty of girls go upside down.

What you have to do is.. work out if your stronger side is on the left or right.
Then if you're say stronger standing on the right side of the pole. You have to stand next to the pole. Have the pole tucked under your left arm. And the right hand slight above your head level. Start by kicking your right leg and left leg upwards. You have to get the concept of lifting both legs first.

It really isn't a matter of kicking your legs hard upwards. It's using your abs to lift both legs upwards. I hook my inside leg first, thigh on the left side of the pole, leg behind the pole. The outside (right) leg on the front of the pole. Both hands about your thigh, look at your hands because you want to tuck your head in so that you don't hurt your neck. Then from there you slide down in that position.. because if you drop your legs you might hurt your back if you don't have enough ab strength.

Then from there once you have the ab and core strength to go upside down easily you can turn your body around to face the pole and .... progress to letting go of your hands.
