    Default Let "Freedom" ring

    I KNEW it. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15020846/

Ever since they banned smoking, I have said this was coming.

What ever happened to "land of the free..."?

P.S. For the record, due to the Stupid Diet (tm), I eat virtually NO transfat anymore. But that is my choice and, for now, not required by law.

"See, believe it or not (and I don't care whether you do), it's never been about the sex. I get sex at home, anytime, and we like it, and it's good for both of us. No, my stripclub experience has been about acceptance, and affirmation, and desirability...There have been some women who have a personality that just clicks with mine, and in the faux-sex atmosphere of the club, it's a mix that is completely seductive." - Jay Zeno

Okay, I won't deny I find that weird - although I have no idea what guaranteed rights this would be interfering with. Is cooking considered "expression"?

Out of curiosity, if the law was passed for economic instead of health reasons, would it be more reasonable? Like if they banned margarine to ensure a healthy dairy industry? (As did happen at one time in Canada. It was struck down, but not because of any inherent right of consumers to eat margarine).

    when did polticians become babysitters??

    seriously.

helmet laws, seatbelt laws, smoking laws...now this. it's insane. if people want to hurt/kill themselves, let them!

orwell may have been off by a few decades, but we're definitely on our way to fulfilling the prophecy.

Mind you, this is a city where they've banned people from possessing airsoft guns.

You mean more reasonable like the "negative secondary effects" rationale for regulating strip clubs to death? Ahh, no.

This is just more evidence that there is a major disconnect between the the will of the common people and the agenda of those we (or more specifically a small mouthy minority) have foolishly put in charge. Apathy kills folks.

About the only consolation I can say here, is while I hate dealing with the religious zealots around here and their attempts to regulate my life, this particular abridgement of my freedom won't be coming here anytime soon. I never thought I'd be able to say thank God I live in a "red" state.

Better start hoarding anything with sugar, meat or caffiene in it. Your coffee, soft drinks and cookies are likely to be next on the do-gooders shit list.

Yeah, in the red states they are only infringing your freedom of speech and association. Your freedom to eat trans fats will be safe and untouched.

The negative secondary effects of strip clubs are unproven and can be debated. I don't think that anyone could argue that without margarine people will buy more butter.

In the US, that started with FDR and The New Deal, and really took off with LBJ's War on Poverty.

probably not, the cheapest food is usually the least nutritional, highly processed and cheap to produce (with lots and lots of high fructose corn syrup..yum). OTOH, fresh fruit, vegetables, etc are more expensive. americans want their Little Willy snack cakes at a low cost. one reason why they're getting fatter every year.

When you give regulatory fascists and their ambulance chasing lawyers an inch, don't be surprised when they take a mile.

And I bought a package of the new trans-fat free Oreos yesterday. Needless to say, they taste like shit. You need a lot of milk to get the dirt taste out of your mouth. Of course according to the food nazi gospel, milk is bad for you too.

^^^ hell, even excessive amounts of water is bad for you. i wonder how long it will be before they start trying to ration that. along with calories, sub-divided into acceptable amounts of fat, carbs and protein of course. and enforced exercise. i can't wait, this country is going to be Hot! heh...

Indeed, there is a difference between food, however unhealthy, and poison. I mean nobody would think it is acceptable to market drain cleaner as a soft drink as long as it was clear that it could be dangerous. It takes a few doses of anti-freeze to kill you - doesn't mean that it is okay in small doses and I doubt anyone here would be promulgating "consumer choice" if Pepsi Cola started an ad campaign.

Food, incidentally, is highly and closely regulated - for price, quality, protection of providers, protection of consumers, protection of industry. It's just regulated in a way that is largely invisible to us. The breathing of air would be a touchy right in today's smog and pollution, but in the loosest, general sense would likely be covered by "life."

Well, the whole scare is either bogus:

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,199734,00.html

Or perhaps there's a little something to it, but it's not that simple, and the alternatives aren't necessarily better:

    http://www.educatedguesswork.org/mov...ch_should.html

Or, the whole thing is a long running political football anyway and it's impossible for us to know which "cause of the moment" to believe, so why worry about it:

What amazes me is that people are living longer on average than they ever have, so what the hell is the problem. Even if we lost a little ground, we'd still be so far ahead of a few decades ago that it's no big deal.

Yes, that's the important "big picture" view not to lose sight of. And in that light, many of the conditions people are concerned about including heart disease, well, they often died for other reasons (including malnutrition) long before they were old enough to develop enough plaque build up to kill them. Sadly a lot of people in the world still tend to die young due to lack of food and nutrition in general, and lack of medicine and health care.
