    Default Poofy Abs? (Pics)

I've been doing cardio and ab workouts for a few months now, and have gotten rid of the fat in the areas I don't want it pretty much. Now, for my abs, on my stomach you can see my hipbones, but then there is like a center area that is barely raised. when you press on it it's hard, like muscle, not squishy, and when i turn to the side it sticks out maybe half an inch. My question is, is it just my abs that are raised and eventually will fall flat, or am I missing something. I really don't think it's a "pooch" but I could be wrong. I included some pics, but I'm not sure if anyone will see what I'm seeing.

Ps - I just drank two bottles of water and a big bowl of oatmeal so my belly is sticking out a little more than usual.

It's really hard for women to define the lower abs. I have some of (if not the) most defined abs in my club, and I still get a little "belly" when I'm on my period or bloated for whatever reason. I had tighter abs down there before my daughter as well.

Really the only feasable definition youll have is two curved in lines, one on each side of your stomach, unless you flex or move a certain way.

Also some girls are predisposed to have more fat layers on their stomach or wherever. I don't think that can be helped.

By the way all of this is coming from personal experience, I'm not a personal trainer or anything. There's probably one on here that could give you better more in depth advice.

Well, could be diet. Even though you're doing your workouts, in order to get a really tight bod you have to eat "clean". This means cutting out processed foods, excess sugars...etc. You look good though.

if the pooch is hard, it might be gas...and if it is, it's an easy fix! Do you have a lot of gas? I do, this it one of my problems because I'm a vegetarian and eat pretty healthy, but the foods I eat are all gas-producing foods. Actually, in my avatar you can kind of tell I have a gas baby (that's what I call it.) I actually get rumors started about me that I'm pregnant and people believe it.

you gotta do a "cleanse"...and stop eating foods that give you gas. I just did one and I'm flat again...attached picture that I jsut took.

have you been to a gyno lately? My little sis was a constant runner and always in the gym, doing marathons and rode horses regularly. Her stomach and ab area felt hard yet it still looked rounded . It turned out she had fibroids. She hadn't been to a gyno in forever. Her fibroids grew wild and she had to have a hystomrectomy. Now she can't wear low cut things because her tummy got so big they had to cut vertically.

I have them too. Not to the extent that she had. I have mine watched every three months. They went away and then a few months ago they are growing back. My abs are still defined. I'm a pretty thin person, but I do feel a fullness and roundness that wasn't there before last May.

I don't mean to scare you, but it might be something you could look into. It's only a gyno check up.

Mine were first detected when I was barely 24. Two of my girlfriends had endometriosis at 19 and 20.

I went to gyno about 2 months ago, everything checked out fine there, Corina.
Emily, I eat mostly vegs, a lot of boca and morning star soy burgers, so maybe that's it? How exactly do you a cleanse? I know there are pills and teas for it on the market.

Bloating that gives a poofy look is often caused by bad digestion. I digest like an 80 year old, so I'm always googling digestion tips. Things that help me the most: Giving up junk food (sugary stuff, caffeiney stuff, fatty stuff- it all gets me bloated, and is 'toxic' or whatever...I do miss it, but it's not worth the discomfort and look), eating small meals, not eating within three hours of lying down or excercising (I read this is the main reason they say not to eat much before sleeping because when you lie down in repose, conscious or not, you just don't digest as well), eating s-l-o-w-l-y, chewing everything very well, and being careful about legumes and 'fast fibres' as I call them...You have to just play it by ear and figure out what your body can and can't deal with comfortably (like I can't handle garlic for whatever reason, nor onions, and have to be very careful with legumes). There are some things that I just don't eat on work days or date days because I know what they do to me, if I really want to eat them at all.

Best of luck. i know your frustration, believe me. I also can't handle alcohol anymore . Not that I'm a huge lush or anything, but you know. But after slaying my guts on some things, no matter how delicious (cheesecake), I've given it up. It's amazing how I can lose ten pounds and have my waist not change at all, while the rest of me shrinks, just cause of perma-bloat. It sucks. I would also be curious of this cleanse? though I worry about anything that aggressively flushes, personally. But it sounds like a good idea. I'm really coming around to this 'toxic' idea. I really do believe that IBS can be caused by being raised on shit processed food.

I was reading an article on some women's magazine that said diet and exercise helps, but it's also genetics. Has your stomach ever been super-flat? Sometimes it's just not possible for a person to have them super-flat. BTW I think since you are flat on the top the slight roundedness looks sexy. I know a lot of men who think this is sexy as it is more feminine then having abs that look like Pink's.

I've always been pretty thin (5'11, 140 pounds) but I've never worked on my abs until now so I have no clue.

what you're describing sounds like the hip flexor muscles to me. they're stablizer muscles and dancing seems to really bring them out. i freaked out about it at first, but customers seem to love them. i'm starting to accept their existence, heh.

is the hard area just inside the hip bones, or right in the center?

Both really. I've actually seen abs that are built and stick out a bit, so I'm wondering if mine are going that way.

I have heard that when you are doing ab work you should do it while trying to push your belly button towards your spine. Something about if you don't make it tight and suck it in while your doing the ab work, it will cause the muscles to grow outward. Remember the gym coaches in high school that were hard as a rock but with huge pot bellies. Supposedly that is why.

you look really hot and i wouldn't worry too much about it. if emily's idea works, then go with it but otherwise it isn't a big deal. emily, you look hot too but i've told you that already.

Juice fast...do it two (three if you can handle it) days and you'll be flat as a board

That is exactly what I was going to say!
When you are doing your crunches etc. you need to make sure you maintain about 30% contraction throughout. Pull your navel in towards your spine. This will also protect your back muscles as your back will lie flat on the floor, rather than being curved.
When you actually do the crunch... make sure your stomach doesn't rise up. it should stay flat.

yeah, it's probably the hip flexors then. mine went through a phase where they just looked wierd to me, but now they're becoming more defined and look better.

if it really bothers you, yoga or pilates might help stretch them out and keep them flatter - i'm just guessing about that though...
