    Thumbs up Languages

Do you speak any languages besides English? Which ones? Are you fluent?

If you could learn any language, what would it be?

I'd like to be fluent in Mandarin, but it would require moving to China and immersing myself completely in Mandarin for at least a couple of years. It is HARD.

    So what's yours? And why?

I understand more Spanish than I can speak & my fluency is fair. I appear more intelligent in Mexico because I listen more than I speak. LOL

That is the same way, I feel about learning others cultures. I Love the experiences of learning something new! I believe learning other languages, and cultures. Helps open your mind to new things. But the languages I list earlier are the ones I really want to know! But I would love to speak every language.

Quite a bit of Spanish...not fluent but enough to get by in a business situation. I've started to learn some French but I'm not saying why or from whom...

Spanish, 'cause I'm from South Texas, and you pretty much learn it without thinking about it. I would like to be better, and if I could learn another I would pick French.

I took Spanish for 4 years in high school and one year in college. Since I never use it, I am nowhere near as fluent in it as I used to be. I can still carry on a conversation, but I'm REALLY bad and slow (think someone who just moved to the US and speaks very broken English).

I would love to learn Arabic, but Arabic is very tough to learn. My friend's husband is originally from Tunisia and speaks Arabic. 3 of his friends are from Tunisia as well, and they all moved here together. Sometimes they'll speak Arabic among each other and it would be cool to know what they are saying. So far I only know three Arabic words/phrases: sex, cigarette, and hurry up. Useful, huh?

I took 4 years of Russian in HS. I can still garble a few things, and I can sound out words if I read them, but since I haven't used it actively in over a decade, I doubt I could carry on much of a conversation past "Hi, my name is...how are you....the weather is nice, etc". I can curse up a storm though, in multiple languages. Thats always important, right? I've been to Europe several times, and that helps with my French, German and Dutch, but only basic stuff, ordering from menus and the like. It's always nice to attempt someone's language when you're in their country. Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink, folks. If I could choose a language to learn...hmmmm. I'm not really sure...I suppose Dutch since I go to Holland more than anywhere else.

I know some Spanish, + I'm currently studying French. I'd like to be able to travel and not seem like a stupid tourist. Next up is Italian. Cognates help make learning a new language easier, which is why I'm focusing on latin-based languages.

Mandarin would be great to learn, but it seems so much more difficult, like starting from scratch. If I had a ton of money I'd go to each country for a few years to immerse myself in the language and culture, but I don't so all I get are school and computer lessons.

Spanish. My parents were born and raised in PR, so that's all they spoke at home. So when I visit PR and speak Spanish, alot of the ppl there say my Spanish is great for an American girl. I have no accent.

    Fluent in Italian.

I took 2 years of Spanish in High School, but only the swear words and naughty phrases have stuck with me... Heh.

I took French in 8th Grade, but I remember none of it.

Hebrew from infancy to high school - it's been a while since I've used it, but I'm pretty confident I still am fluent.
French - 3 years in high school.
    German - studying right now!
Italian - next up to learn.

After that I think I'll be done.

Just English now... I spoke a bit of Italian, German, and Arabic when I was real little... but I'll be damned if I can recall much of it now. They were the native languages of my family, but English was my first language. I only picked up the others from hearing them around the house. By the time I hit elementary school, the schools were still on the Only Speak English kick and wanted bilingual families to not let their kids speak other languages at home so that they could learn English better.
