    Default Need makeup help

Yeah, I am 'outting' my Polish-nosed face for the very shallow reason that I feel kinda self-conscious and inadequate in my new club. Many of these girls are 'professional' stripper types, and look damn flawless. I've never seen so many cellulite free bodies in my life. It's a little disheartening.

But asides body qualms, I am most self-conscious about my make up and hair. I kinda just wing it with those things. I basically just put on some lip gloss, eye liner, mascara, and girly-pink eyeshadow with white sparklies. But it doesn't quite 'fit'. It doesn't do much for me...doesn't seem 'dramatic' enough compared to all those wham-zam-look at me pretty faces. So I thought about getting a MAC makeover thing, though whenever I get makeovers I can never make it work for me when I get back home. Should I try fake lashes? What colours would work for me, do you think? For lips or eyes?

And for my hair...I just blow-dry it. Are there any products that keep it soft and flowing? It has a way of getting flat and icky by the end of a shift. I am very inept with hair styling too. Anything that involves more than a basic brush and blowdryer confounds me. I basically just have long layers. Are there any cuts that would be more flattering? Well anyway. Below is a pic of me on break from work, so in fact my 'work' look. Kinda amateur. Opinions please!

If you shape your eyebrows thinner then it will make your eyes look larger. IMO.

yeah i think you should get your hair professionally cut and colored. The color does nothing for your beautiful self.

^^^I agree, I think brown or red hair would suit you better, or maybe brown hair with blond highlights. Or if you want to remain a blond, maybe lighten your eyebrows and either tan your face or use a bronzer. You have a pretty face but that hair color doesn't do you justice. I love long hair, but I think your hair is a bit too long for your face, so maybe shoulder length would be more flattering.

As far as hair products go, my hair is damaged from coloring it, and I really like Redken Anti-Snap leave in treatment and Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops to keep it smooth and not frizzy. Don't use too much of the Gloss Drops though, or your hair will look greasy.

I love the look of fake eyelashes. I've tried to put them on myself a couple times but never got the hang of it. I just didn't have the patience. But if you can apply them and have them look good, go for it!

As far as makeup goes, I love the look of smoky dark eyes (gray or black eyeshadow) with light pink lip gloss, and I think that would look great on you.

I was thinking about getting some professional low-lights done...it could be the lighting in the picture, but my hair usually gets the most compliments of my look. :S So I'm hesistant to go away from blonde...but thanks. I could try going my caramel in colour perhaps.

It took me a long time to figure out make-up and I'm still sort of a hair-tard, but here are some recommendations:

Kevin Aucoin's book Making Faces has straight-forward, step-by-step directions for lots of different looks, and is quite good. Also has some advice about finding the right colors. Getting it right is just a matter of practice.

Hot-rollers are the best thing I've ever found for putting volume in my hair. I put in a curl-making product by Catwalk, then the rollers, then, after I take them out, Paul Mitchell volume something-or-other hairspray. It's nice and glam without being poofy or sticky.

You might also want to buy one of those irritating hairstyle magazines from the grocery store -- the one aptly named "Hairstyle" is pretty good, if you have it up in Canada. It has directions many different trendy looks that are pretty easy to follow.

I'm with those who think a darker hair color might be nice on you. Also, you have a long face, as do I, and long hair with no layers or bangs isn't the most flattering cut for us.

My favorite hair product ever is paul mitchell super skinny serum. I forget how frizzy my hair truly is until I miss using this after washing my hair. Then its frizz city!

I don't think you need to change your hair, it looks like a bad picture to me, too much blue and green reflecting off the computer. Can you take a pic outdoors with a regular camera and no flash? That would be MUCH better!!!

BTW, I think you have a great look, I would start with some falsies and maybe a really good foundation that gives your skin that perfect look (I love mineral makeups right now!)!

I'm not quite sure what look you want, here in Vegas it's not as dramatic as it used to be when it comes to hair and makeup. Usually falsies, some well done smokey eyes and lip gloss will suffice and for hair, the prettiest look here right now is the loose spiral curls at the bottom.

    Hey!
Omg, I had the very same thoughts when I started there too.. I *think* I've gotten a lot better at applying "stripperish" makeup since working there and here is what I do-

    • Start with a moisturized face, then put on a full-coverage foundation, then pressed powder (I use MAC for both, I love the way they feel).. Then bronzer alllll over my face, mostly on the contours of my cheeks, apples of my cheeks, outer edges (you'll learn how to make this look not so fake after awhile), and even down on my neck to make sure there's no big difference between my face and neck.

    • For my eyes, I use a liquidy black eyeliner and draw like "cat eye" lines up and away from the outer corners of my eyes, and line all around my eyes, even the inner rims. You can play with the thickness of this, and go inside the rims of your eyes if you want.. Then I use a base of a shimmery browny-gold eyeshadow all over my lids (up to the eyebrow), and follow it with a darker brown in the creases, and sort of "up and out" from the outer corner of my eye with the cat-eye line..

    • I use a white shimmery highlight eyeshadow right below my eyebrow, and in the inner corners of my eyes. I draw my eyebrows on a bit too, and use a shimmery bronze powder on my cheekbones...

    • And the false lashes!! They're the finishing touch by far! I feel naked without them now.. Once you get the hang of them they aren't too too hard to apply.
I use a lot of MAC makeup, I got frustrated with trying to save money on drugstore brands but then never liking the quality/colour intensity of it! It's more expensive, but I find it's worth it to be able to try it on in the store and know it's very good quality.
I have never gone to a MAC makeover, I just kinda learned by trial and error, but maybe they could help you out if you did that.. Is it free? I guess tell them you want a really "dramatic nighttime look" (or say flat out "stripper look" haha).
If my instructions were confusing to read, sorry! I just want to try and help you cuz I know how you feel and I really feel better now that I go a bit more heavy on the makeup.. it makes me feel more dramatic and "in character" at work. At first you're gonna feel ridiculous leaving your house in that much makeup, but it makes all the difference once you're at work and it fits right in at this club!
I think it's helped my money a lot, too, it makes me look a little less inexperienced and a bit less innocent.

Anyways, I love helping girls with their makeup at work, so if we're ever there at the same time, don't be shy to ask me.
And for your hair, I think blondes generally do pretty well in this club, so maybe lowlights underneath would be all you need.. And maybe some more layers and straightening it out would look nice. You definitely don't need extensions, lucky girl! I like "Biosilk" for making my ends look all shiny and soft.. Go to any hair salon and they should have it, and there are likely tons of other great products out there.. Ok this is long! Ciao

Definitely get us a better pic (without the TV/computer glare in the background). What color eyes do you have? What look, exactly, are you going for? I love doing make up, but I need more input!!

No, it's the lighting...Molly's hair color looks very natural in person. Leave your hair- it's sparkly and blonde and pretty!

I don't know shit about makeup either. False eyelashes and a brow shaping would be my suggestions.

I think your hair in good lighting would be very nice, don't change it!

You might want to try hot rollers. if you use only the big ones, it'll just give your hair a ton of volume and some shape at the ends. I put them in my hair after I've straightened it when I want the big sex kitten hair look. They're easy to use too. I straighten my hair, roll the rollers in (and since my hair is already straight, i don't have to worry about rolling them perfectly, since I'm just looking to get body) and do my makeup while the rollers cool. Take 'em out, and ta da! Instant glam!

I think the single best improvement you could make, (because really, you're very very beautiful) is to get your eyebrows professionally shaped/waxed. I found that well manicured eyebrows, shaped specifically for your face shape, can give you incredible eyes and cheekbones. It's a simple little thing that can really makeover your entire face.

as for makeup, it really depends on what look you're going for. but they're are soem basics that can be used for any look.

i start off with a good foundation, then I use a light colored bronzer (only a shade or two darker than my skin tone). the easiest way to use bronzer for contouring (which i think amkes a very sexy look) is to suck in your cheek, then apply it SLIGHTLY in the hollows. I use highlighter above the cheekbones to really set them off. I also recommend using a brow pencil to define your eyebrows a bit more, it can look very sexy/dramatic.

Eyes are my best facial feature, so I use neutral lipstick and really play up my eyes. Black eyeliner (I'm a doofus with liquid liner, so I take a regular liner pencil, and melt the tip with a match...it applies smoothly and gets almost the same look as a liquid liner, but with the control of a pencil). Then I use a shimmery pale color (either silver or gold usually, depending on my outfit)all over the lid, then a darker shade (either a dark grey/silver/black or a deep brown) in the crease of the lid to contour some more, extending it in the outer corners to make my eyes look even bigger and cat-like (you see this look in all Playboy and Penthouse). Curl the lashes, two coats of mascara (top and bottom lashes) and yay! Super hot look!

The one thing that will make a big difference is definitely brow shaping. Under ordinary circumstances, there's nothing really wrong with your brows, but for a flawless 'stripper' look, I would suggest getting them done. Do you ever get them waxed? It's usually just about $10-15US, at least here in Chicago.

The only other thing I could say would be fake eyelashes. It's part of the whole stripper-glam thing that make you guys seem like a fantasy-come-true.

I think your hair needs more dimesion. A blonde friend gets about 5 different blone high and lowlight colors put in her hair, and she's still blonde but it's full of life, not flat- color wise. It's gorgeous.

Coming from a makeup artist, this sounds bad- but a great haircut and OK makeup will always look more finished than great makeup and haphazard hair.

I would get a great cut and style, and offer to pay your hairstylist for a private lesson.

Molly, where do you live? Aside from experimenting yourself, it's always great to get a one-on-one lesson with a makeup artist. Many of the counter girls will offer private makeup lessons if you pay them.

Definitely get your eyebrows sculpted. If you get the professionally tweezed, then you can keep up with it by tweezing couple of times a week to pluck off stary hairs coming in. I prefer tweezing over waxing because it can be more gradual, and you have less risk of the wax burning your face or the person doing an "ooops" I tweezed too much.

Makeup is about projecting an image, and what is your image? A surfer girl that worked at a club I knew wore no makeup except for mascara and gloss, but she was the epitome of beach bunny and the no-makeup surfer chick look worked well on her. Sometimes, if ppl all around you wear tons of makeup, you may get noticed if you look more fresh-faced. You can be put together and polished and be fresh-faced too.

What is your look? Some ppl just don't look good or comfortable wearing lots of makeup, and others do. Makeup should project what you're trying to project, and add to your confidence and make you feel comfortable. Don't wear makeup just because everyone else wears ton- wear however much you want to need to make you feel great. That could be as little as gloss or enough makeup to make a drag queen topple.

For your look, I think you would look great with red or rose-stained lips, gloss, faux lashes, heavy black liner on top, none on bottom. Use taupe and creams to open up your eyes. Med taupes in the crease, med-light on the lid and ivory under the brow arch. White liner in the rims to open your eyes up. Dab of white metallic shadow in the inner corner to brighten up your entire eye area. You don't have a lot of space between your brows and eyes- tweezing will open up your eyes more, but I think really accentuating the openess by fake lashes would really brighten up your face. I'd say since you have a really pretty and slender face, I would keep things bright and light rather than dark and smokey. If you do go for smokey eyes, go for more of a sculpted smokey eye (where the color remians fairly light in the inner corner and you focus the color on the crease and corner) and keep it fairly simple rather than having tons of liner and shadown under the eyes. I'd feeling more of a 1930's glamour more. Focus colors on the outside of your eyes, rather than on the inside. i.e. with liner, start thin and get thicker as you line past the center. I wouldn't "sculpt" cheeks- just apply a pop of color on the apple of your cheeks.

    ^^ Good idea.

bleaching eyebrows can also help open up the face. I just use facial bleaching creme and do it myself on models. Do not- under any circumstances- use hair bleach on your eyebrows. The facial bleach (Jolen is the brand) is nice because it's thick and it doesn't run. You have to remove it every minute or so to check the color- stop at @ a shade or two darker than your preffered color, as damp hair is darker- and rise it off. If it's not as ligth as you want, you can choose to re-bleach it. Also, don't bleach for a day or two after you've had your eyebrows tweezed/waxed. The skin could get irritated.

Thanks for the opinions...though besides possible lowlights and some side swept bangs I've been thinking about, I don't think I have the guts for anything dramatic with my hair. i keep it long because it's so thick it just poofs right out kinda strangely when it doesn't have the length to weigh it down. I'll try to get a better picture somehow...

And for my brows. I used to get them professionally done, but the woman who did them initially started me on this bigger brow business, so maybe i'll find someone else. My brows are strange and a bitch- they're actually curly. Which is very strange because my hair is straight. I've never seen anyone with fucked up curly hair brows except me and my brother. I trim them once in a while and they always look better after that, but they grow like weeds. Because of their strangeness they are very tricky to pluck. I'll get them done and see. Uh, I don't know about bleaching them...maybe a little lighter would be good though. But some people look so weird after they bleach their brows? I'll ask the brow lady what she thinks.

As for my eyes, they are green ( i think Venus asked).

    Thanks for all the tips

You don't have to do anything dramatic with your hair, but getting a great cut that you *know* hoe to style in couple of ways can do wonders for your overall look.

You can stay with the dark brows- light brows can be an upkeep. And I've seen curly brows before. I do like natural brows, I don't recommend something super thin, but some shape and arching is very flattering to most faces. It could be the shot, but I didn't see a lot of arching in your pic.

I agree, I like your face the way it is. That's why I suggested falsies if you want to glam it up, and a good foundation. Other than that you have a very pretty face, especially your eyes! I don't think you need too much more.

I have crazy eyebrows too, and having them professionally shaped helps a bunch . . . I should do it more often.

Gosh, Molly, you're so pretty! I love your mouth! I don't think you'll have to do anything crazy, just glam it up with the lashes and more stylized hair and you'll be good to go. Also don't forget accessories -- some fake bling always helps stripperize you.

And for crying out loud, go get some good professional photos taken while you're all hot and young. It would be a waste not to.

I would say that you don't need a lot of make-up to get a "punch" out of your eyes. Using bold colors (even if its just eyeliner) makes a huge difference. I usually just play up my eyes and go neutral on the lipstick (but my money maker was always my eyes...if you have Angelina Jolie - type lips play up the lips).

But, colors that go good on green eyes are purples (my fave) and browns. You should totally go have a consult at your local MAC counter. They will show you the colors that you can use and how to apply them. 5 years ago I did that because I just wasn't happy with my "plain" colors and now I'm addicted to MAC and to lots of color in my eye make up. So you don't need to "look like a stripper" to add some color to make your eyes pop.
