    Default Allergic to Mosquitoes

I'm allergic to mosquitoes and I was bitten pretty nasty two days ago. Now my entire arm is swollen and parts of my leg and side are too. A normal bite turns up about six centimeters on me. One of the bites is twenty! Is there anything I can do? Before? After? I heard vegemite prevents mosquitoes but I have actually never eaten it out of principle. Ideas?

I know there's stuff you can eat before to make you unattractive to bugs but I don't know what that is. As far as after...cortisone? Neosporin to keep it from being infected. Oatmeal baths or compacts to keep it from itching??? Everyone else probably has a better idea...

Ah. Vegemite. That's what you eat. I've never eaten it and it was a sense of American pride on my end. The Aussies never got me to eat the nasty vegemite! I've heard horror stories about it's flavour. I also don't have a bath tub. Would rubbing in oatmeal during a shower work? I've got Soov on it.

It's the vitamin B in vegemite that is suposed to stop the mozzies biting you. Just get some B complex vitamins instead. Um, you know Vegemite is American owned anyway (or at least it was last time i ever took any notice...)? :-D

yeah, or just putting wet oatmeal on the bites. I'd google this....I'm sure one of the girls knows a good homeopathic remedy.

It may be American owned but I got my pride, darn it! I'll get E so that my pride remains intact. You Aussies won't make ME eat vegemite! My mum vomited when she ate it. I'm convinced it's an Australian prank to make foreigners sick... Conspiracy theory! Anyway I can't google easily because I'm on my phone and most sites are too large but I'll try. And I'm gonna rub random things on my skin...

I get bad reactions like that to the bites too. Take an antihistamine ASAP. Claritin, Aerius or something similar works for me.

I found like many people do, that after my first couple of thousand bites mosquitos dont bother me anymore, so you at least probably have that to look forward to (-:

I dodnt eat Vegemite for ages either. We used to get Marmite (The proper Marmite not the horrible Aussie stuff) sent over from England for the first couple of years. I dont know, one day I guess I must have just changed. I dont know what E is, but if it's full of b vitamins then try it! :-D

Btw - how was your cats birthday? I was in Sydney.

Ask them nicely to not bite you? Have you tried some of the repellants you can wear around your wrist or on your body?

Normally mozzies don't like me. Aussie ones do, though. Damn blood-sucking Aussies! Kidding. I haven't tried repellent because it never was a problem before. Will try! My cat's birthday was great! Want to come to an American Thanksgiving? Turkey and pumpkin pie! And I'm still convinced vegemite is a well-done Australian prank to make foreigners sick. But it really was made as food back in the day!

The third Thursday of November. You have a lot of food. Turkey or ham is the main dish. Sides are green bean casserroles, a form of cranberry jelly, american buttermilk biscuits, mashed potatoes, pumpkin apple and sweet potato pie, cake, crisps, dips, vegetable platters and more...all normally for eight to ten people. When it's done you split up the food and eat it until Christmas.

With my hand on my heart, lol!

Ever since World War ll Australian troops have depended on Vegemite for a taste of home.

Australian doctors started recommending Vegemite as a convenient source of vitamin B after it was approved by the British Medical Association in 1939.

These days you'll find jars and tubes of Vegemite with Aussie backpackers and travelers the world over.

Vegemite is responsible for giving us a second national song - the "Happy Little Vegemites" jingle and it continues to put a rose in every patriotic cheek.

There's also Vegemaite for morons here

LM, I think they sell Avon in your part of the world don't they? Get yourself the Avon original Skin So Soft...not the bug spray they sell, but the original oil. Also, don't get the scented ones. It is the ONLY thing that keeps those mosquitoes from biting me.

I've found a few things that make the itching better but the only thing that helps after I'm bitten is Benadryl Itch Stopping Gel (Extra Strength). If they don't have it over there, go to the Pfizer website and see if you can order it somehow.

I feel ya. When I get bit the welts can last up to 2 weeks sometimes.

I get an allergic reaction to mosquitos as well. My advice is to scratch the hell out of the bites until they bleed, scab over, and leave a lovely scar. Please don't follow my advice!!!

I had a friend who insisted that drinking aloe vera juice every day kept the skeetoes away. They never bother me anyway, so I've never tried it. But the juice is cheap, so I'd give it a shot.

Oh oh oh, I forgot - have you tried that clicker thing? Its a yellow plastic thing you put over the bite and click and it sort of zaps the bite and takes the ithchyness away. I've found it works well. It probably wont help at all with the actual reaction you're having to the bites but may at least give you some releif possibly... You get them in chemists for about $20 and they last forever.

I used to use Rid repellant when I first moved here, until one day some spilt in my bag and melted the surface of my camera!

Campo Phenique. I use it on my daughter (bites are more like welts immediately).

Benadryl is usually good for that kind of allergic reaction.

I asked my boyfriend. He said he knew what Benadryl was but wasn't sure if it was in Australia. Then he said, 'why? Do you have a headache?' lol. I have never heard of clickers! Ever! Will try. I'll write all the brands here and check with the pharmacist. They love when I do this. Y'know they don't have tylenol here?

Gold Coast, please come! Tradition says you bring a dish usually a dessert or green bean casserole with fried onions. Since I'm pretty sure anything would be hard to bring, I'm pretty much making everything, so... A bottle of wine or some soda or something?
