    Default Merena IUD

    Does anyone have one?

I heard this type of IUD can stop periods which is something I want rather than continiously taking the pill. I am also curious as to why it says its meant for people who are in a stable monogamous relationship. If not used in a stable relationship (which Im not in) then it can up the risk for PID. Ive never had PID. I would think a girl would have just the same amount of risk getting PID on any other birth control method.

The IUD goes in through the cervix, and little strings come out so that the DR can pull the IUD out when you are done... these strings are a little pathway for microorganisms to enter the uterus, which is not good. That would be my somewhat educated guess.

I had an IUD. Make sure you take their advice... I don't know much about you, but if you have not had children yet, I don't recommend an IUD. I got one (no kids), my uterus was still too small, and I had CONSTANT terrible cramps for 3 months untill I had it taken out.

Mirena is smaller and made out of plastic, making it more comfortable than the tradition copper IUD. Copper IUDs make you bleed more and give you cramps.

As for PID, bacteria can (over) grow on the string. (EW!) If you have multiple partners and don't use condoms, you are at risk for infection just like any other woman without an IUD. If left untreated, I guess that the infection might be worse for IUD users?

Honestly I would not reccomend an IUD unless you are 30+ or you have child.

I have a 1 year old but the horror stories of IUD's..... Ehhh no thank you. I had one friend whos fell out and another who had an IUD pregnancy and had to abort the baby (the IUD can cause pregnancy complications)

I love the Mirena IUD. I wasn't up for the commitment level of the Paraguard (as I do want to have children sometime soon). And I hated taking the pill all the freakin time. For me, the cramping was *bad* for the first few days, along the lines of what I experience normally without the pill (yay, endometriosis), but not unbearable when offset with painkillers.
If you haven't had one before or had a kid, make sure you check the string often, as the IUD has a higher chance of slipping in those cases, leading to big ugly badness. Other than that, it's awesome.

I have the paragard so I can't really comment on the mirena. I can tell you that it's a simple procedure to insert and if you decide that it's not for you it's very easy for the doctor to remove and only takes a few minutes.

    from plannedparenthood site:
Infection — Pelvic infection associated with IUD use is rare. It is caused by bacteria getting into the uterus during insertion. Most infection develops within three weeks of insertion. Infection after three weeks is very rare. It usually happens through exposure to sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. Pelvic infections left untreated can cause sterility.

Because when you are in a stable and monogomous relationship, there's no risk of contracting std's. With the iud, the std can shoot straight up the string into the uterus, hence the greater risk for pid.

Mirena is very different. IUDs have a bad rep in this country because of the Dalkon Shield way back when... but IUDs are incredibly popular in other parts of the world. Mirena has a great track record. Mirena is diferent from the copper IUDs. It works similar to a Nuva in that it releases very small amounts of hormones into your reproductive system. The good thing is that the hormones do not get into the general blood stream. You're getting a lot less hormones through Mirena than any other hormne based birth control.

With the Mirena, losing your period is not guaranteed- but it does happen in many women.

Also, many women in Europe use Mirena without having a baby- I would say go for it. You have a slightly elevated chance of expelling the IUD if you've never been pregnant. The "no IUD for women that have not had kids" is actually more of a pre-emptive lawsuit issue for docs that's *still* unfortunately based on the Daklon Shield debacle- and not on any medical science. Just be sure to protect your health by using condoms 100% of the time.

Oh ok I get it now. Most of the stuff I was reading online about IUD wouldnt tell me why so thanks for the explanation. Yea I use condoms with everyone all the time. I also spoke with a co-worker (she has Minera IUD) about it and she said that before her pregnancies and right before she got preggers again it was easy for her to get preggers right after the IUD was taken out. I dont have kids and dont plan on having any for about 10 years or more.

I have a Mirena. I have never had children. When they first put it in it hurt like HELL! And I had terrible cramps for a few days. But then my body adjusted and now I love it. I've had it four years now. I did bleed for the first three months pretty much nonstop, like my body was cleaning itself out. Then it stopped and I hardly have bled since then. I do get periods sometimes but nothing heavy at all.

This is the only form of birth control I can use besides condoms. I can't take ANY birth control pills due to migraines but I can have a Mirena. If you are not in a manogamous relationship with someone you KNOW is clean just use a condom.

Good luck finding a doctor to give it to you if you're not thirty and don't have kids. Even if you don't care about the pain they will find ANY excuse not to give it to you. I even got that since the COPPER one was known to cause sterility this one MIGHT to. I said Good, I don't want kids. Of COURSE I'll change my mind. Why can a sixteen year old choose to have one and I cannot choose not to?

I went to Planned Parenthood. Granted, they're not known for their bedside manner, but once they were aware that I was fully briefed on the possible side effects, they (grudgingly) gave me one. My regular gyno wouln't, believing I was too young to make the decision (I'm 22, you tool). You may have to call around, but you can find someone if you look hard enough.

In case you didn't catch it before, I want to reiterate: the cramping was really, really bad. I wouldn't plan on hitting the gym for a while after implantation (installation?). Big owies.

But that being said, Mirena's awesome. No more periods for me!!!

You're very lucky. I've gone to ten doctors in three countries and they don't give a damn how much research I did. I'm going to ask again in November. I ask every time! Lol.

here is some more info on the mirena IUD.

I have the IUD i got it a month & 1/2 ago. cramping first week then every so often from there. Spotting every so often. I think its awesome not worring about taking a pill or doubling the pill since u forgot one. they say its recommending for women who have had a child but they r alot of women who has none get the IUD.

It hurt when put in but it wasn't that bad. i would do it all over again.
The periods will be alot lighter possibly spot few days or none at all.

    i hope the link helps

I got mine from my gyno in New Orleans and I think I was about 30 but she didn't even flinch at the idea of doing it. She even asked if I wanted my tubes tied. She was really cool about not trying to convince me to have kids.

My best friend has this. She's 40 and her periods were so bad she'd miss a couple of days of work each month, heavy bleeding and cramps. Her doc tried everything and her next option was a hysterctomy. Then they found Merena.

I went with her when she got it put in and even from my point it hurt like hell! She had some bleeding but after a few months she was back to normal. I'm not sure if her priods have stopped but that is a possibilaty.

Just had to chime in on this one....

I got the IUD shortly after I had my baby. It was great... for the first few months. Sex was wonderful cos I didn't have to worry about condoms or whatnot, but.... (dun dun dun...)

I started bleeding irregularly. My Dr. told me this was normal with the Mirena. Well, a month later, I was still bleeding and had cramps so bad I could barely walk. I had to go to the ER where they tell me I am pregnant. PREGNANT!!! WTF! So, come to find out the pregnancy had implanted in my fallopian tube. I had to have an emergency laproscopy to remove it. They told me if I had waited a day, my tube would have ruptured and I could have died. It fuc*ing sucked. I was out of work for 2 weeks and couldn't drive or lift anything. I could barely walk. Sucked. Bad. Anyway, I guess I am just extremely fertile. 99.9% effective my ass. And I have the scars to prove it.

Please don't get me wrong, this is a rare case with the Mirena. I don't want to scare you away from it, but if you start bleeding irregularly, don't let someone tell you that it's ok.... I wish I had gotten a second opinion, could have saved me a lot of pain, money and time. Just wanted to share.

that's scary. I mean 99.9 percent still leaves that .01 percent that does get pregnant on it.

I won't lie that mine hurt like hell going in and I cramped VERY badly the first day or so after I got it inserted. I even called my doctor at 11 p.m. the night I had it inserted because I felt like I was going into labor and couldn't get out of my friend's car. Now, I've never been in labor but to me it felt like my body was trying to get rid of it. I found that drinking wine helped because it relaxed my body (even though my doctor didn't really think it was a good idea). But after a few days the cramping went away and I'm very happy with it.

Still, when I have it replaced I want to be put under. I don't think I can handle the pain again of inserting it.

^ Have you seen the percentages of condoms, oral birth control and the patch? Not better - at all.

^^^^ Agreed. An IUD is the most effective method next to sterilization and..... no sex at all. With my luck, it would be an immaculate conception.

Ive completely looked into the IUD and im glad this thread is here. My best friend just had it done this week., said the pain wasn't bad at all ( but I think she has the cervix made of steel ). her explaining it made me clinch up. Not for me for many o' reasons.

I think getting sterilized is the only option for me. Sticking something in my cervix... agh. Possible tubal ..AGH and i'd be the one i Swear to god.

I'm doing the sponge with pull out and ovulation tests. yah i know a lot of work.

Too bad there isnt something even better then an IUD
