    Yom Kippur at Chabad

I couldn't afford tickets to a Reform congregation for the High Holidays this year, so I decided today to go to outreach. This evening and tomorrow, I will be attending Yom Kippur services at the Chabad house. This is a Chasidic organization, and here I'm going to waltz in with my blond hair and blue eyes and sit with all the women behind the mechitzah for a right old-fashioned black-hat frum service. I guess I'll drive there and try to park around the corner so nobody sees me driving on Yom Kippur, LOL!

    This should be interesting...

I have to dig out some pantyhose, long sleeves, ankle-length skirt. Aigh. I haven't worn pantyhose in years!

For any Jews who are observing the holiest day of 5767, may you have an easy fast, and may we all be sealed for a good year.

I've been to a few Orthodox services and even a Bar Mitzvah but never a Yom Kippur service. Should be interesting.

Kol Nidre was great! It was very progressive for a Chasidic service. The women were wearing the same stuff they'd wear to any synagogue service, which is good news; it means I can wear my pants today. The mechitzah (partition separating the men from the women) ran down the middle of the room, perpendicular to the bimah, so that we women could still see everything. The rabbi told a lot of jokes and was very relaxed and casual, and friendly to the women too. He even moved the mechitzah in the middle of the service so we could see better. It was more immediately welcoming and friendly than any new Reform congregation I've attended. I'm looking forward to going back today!

Sounds amazing.. I was brought up as a reform jew and never experienced that intense of a service...
I am fasting today and I want food!!!!!
At least I can break the fast tonight with friends. Do you have a place to break fast?

They'll have a small break fast at the Chabad house after the service, and then I'll probably come home and microwave something. I took a break and skipped the afternoon service to take a nap... I'm not suffering quite as much when I'm asleep, ha ha.

Chasidic services are LONG. The morning service lasted over three hours. They sing a lot, and every song starts with at least two minutes of "ya ya ya ya ya yaaaaa ya ya yaaaa" while everyone (well, all the men) gets worked up to singing. It does kind of bother me a little bit that the men do all the singing, the men get all the aliyot, etc. They try hard to include the women, but we're still there primarily as observers and not as participants. I can see why I would rebel if I was brought up that way.

So now that it's been over for awhile... I just want to say that if any of you Jews ever get the chance to attend a Chasidic service, you should go. It was definitely an experience. They are very spiritual and the end of Yom Kippur was amazing...

By the end of the closing service, we hadn't eaten or had any water for 26 hours, we had been standing for an hour, we were dizzy and feeling pretty high, and they started this loud stomping, clapping, singing. Even the women got swept up in it, on our side of the white curtain; the rabbi was standing on a chair, dancing, his eyes closed, obviously transported. I don't know how long this lasted, but it was amazing to be a part of it. Then suddenly the rabbi stopped and blew a long blast on the shofar as the holiday ended, and I tell you it really felt like the closing of the gates of Heaven. By the end of it, I was ready to collapse.

It was one of the deeper religious moments of my life. And the people were so wonderful and welcoming. I'll be going back, and I'll remember that Yom Kippur for a very long time.

If you get the chance, do go!

Yekhefah, thanks for sharing your experiences. So much of judaism enchants me.
May I ask, though, why you haven't answered my PMs? I'm a bit confused.
