Default dog not gaining much weight...

I'm a little concerned. Hank, the newest addition to our family has only gained 4 pounds in the past three weeks. We're guessing he's a great dane/dalmation/pit mix. We don't expect him to get very big, he's ten months old and about the size of a female lab and he's got a goofy kind of lanky build. He only weighs 55 Lbs!!! He dosen't look sickly, but he isn't filling out very much.

I feed him 4 cups of large breed food per day. His appetite is good and he shows no sign of lethargy, vomiting, or discomfort at all. I'm taking a stool sample to the vet tomorrow just to make sure there's no intesinal parasites.

Anybody have a similar expierience with thier dog? I'm planning on just feeding him more if his stool sample comes out clean. Am I just over-reacting?

there are some great danes that are so skinny it's scary, but that's just what they look like. Dalmations too but I don't think with pits. As long as his coat looks glossy and nice, it's probably fine. Stool sample is a good idea but I would make sure that you're feeding your dog food that's specifically formulated for big dogs--or active dogs, or whatever category yours fits into.

doesn't sound like he's starving though.

Great Danes and Dalmations are both very lean, active dogs. So if his ribs/backbone arent sticking out, and he does eat, have an appitite, is playful, and poops, I wouldnt be to concerned.
Dry dog food is much more healthy and nutritional than canned food, but canned has a higher fat content, so if you would like to put a few pounds on your dog, then give him a can or 2 of wet food every day, just make sure he still gets the dry stuff to, because it is better for him.

Use a few tablespoons of corn oil over his food twice a day, the oil has 2x the energy that dry kibble has and it has good fats in it for his coat. I use this in the summer when my horses and dogs drop weight, you can also use canola, or olive oil, whatever your preference. And try and feed a good quality dog food, junk in =junk out. Hope this helps!!

maybe a stupid advice....but could it be a "tapeworm" inside him eating all the food? I do recall it happens.

My papillon only weighs 4 lbs, so I am also trying to get him to gain weight. My vet put him on eukanuba 3x/day, and to give him canned food 4x/week as a supplement. So far he has gained 1/2 a lb-yay! lol. but couldnt the oil over the food give a dog the runs? like too much fat in the diet or something?

Well, the vets looked at his poo today and apparently he's healthy and parasite free. They told me to feed him an extra 1/2-1 cup more and see if that works.

Thanks for the oil suggestion, Corgila. I'm going to try that if the extra food doesn't help.
